I've added over 100 songs this month - I go through spells where I'll buy 5-6 discs a month for a few months...then go by request only for a while. I wait until there are enough songs to make it worth the time it takes to upload and print the sheets with the new stuff.

I typically will wait for a couple months before I get any new music. I see no point in getting all the 'flavor of the week' stuff the second it hits the shelves, 9 out of 10 times the majority of the discs IF they get sung at all will only be sung for a couple months max, i'd rather wait a while & get something our customers typically really want instead of just giving them new stuff. Most of our requests are for 'new' classic rock from 60's-90's anyway & country.

I do think not adding new stuff is a mistake due to the fact thats where people will go..I have rep for having the new stuff every month..true alot of it isnt done but it also seems to be a factor why people perfer to go to my show then the others..

I consistantly update with chartbuster hits of the year which come out at the end of the year or early the following. Lets me keep my books updated fairly often and keeps me from filling my disc holder and song book with songs no one will sing after the bloom is off the rose. Another positive is that it is a lot cheaper to do it this way.

I add a few hundred tracks each month, but some months (when I've been spending) I will add a few thousand.
I agree that "current chart hits" is not a great investment, because in 2 years time - nobody will touch them. But by the same token, I maintain a "Current Hits" page, which does draw some attention each gig.
I need to continue writing my book software. I plan to use this to keep a database of the songs, rather than querying the filesystem/tags each time I compile my book. Thus allowing me to categorise better also.

At least once a week I hear - "Omigod! I can't believe you have THIS song! Nobody else has it!" Okay, there ya go. I've been pretty good about picking and choosing what will get sung, based on the singers that frequent our shows. I don't just buy everything - I'm careful, get stuff based on singers, not just the songs. Singers love it when they walk in and I say, "Make sure you check out the new songs page - there's something there for you!" They almost get giddy with excitement and always come and express their gratitude for thinking about them. Such a simple thing to do to make people feel better. Add to this that I get tired of singing the same old stuff over and over - and when something new comes out that I think I can sing, I'll sure get it.
It's funny but around here it's the little things that create an impression with people, and create that sense of loyalty that keeps them following us for 12 years. Buying people their music is one of those things...

k I get this same statement all the time. If I get alot of requests for something very new - then chances are I will get it, just buing the new stuff to say I have it is not the reason people come to my shows. They come back because I buy what THEY, the customer that supports the shows - WANT to sing. If they want the new stuff I will get it, but typically our 'new' song requests are for 60's-90's rock & country. It was even admitted Quote: have rep for having the new stuff every month..true alot of it isnt done . For me this is not a viable business move if alot of it won't get done. I get enough of that anyway, i'd rather get what will get done more often. This brings back our regulars consistantly & when a new person comes in and asks if I have something, i'll tell them yay or nay & that I will try to get it.
Also just got my internet working at work not too long ago so will be setting up accounts from selectatrack & tricerasoft to be able to download requests on the spot.

DITTO THAT!!!!!!
I used to add the monthly CDs, but only 2-3 of my regulars will even try anything new. So I canceled my subscriptions. If one of my regs REALLY REALLY wants a certain song I will usually get it for em, but other than that, not much adding of new music on my part.

Other than what I can get on custom CDG's I decided about 3 months ago to back off buying new music. I invested about 6K in the past 2 years to complete my library. I have probably 25,000 with no duplicates and I have purchased probably 38,000 songs to get that many. It's too bad that custom cdg's were not available until a couple of years ago. Oh well
I have more than enough for any karaoke enthusiast and that's good enough for me. I can probably do without 23,000 of those songs as most songs never get requested anyway. My problem was not being able to predict the 2000 songs that folks would actually sing, so I purchased just about everything I could.
There are too many titles to try to keep up with and it is a never ending battle. LOL

One of my consistant measures for the health of the economy is the "sound choice" effect on ebay. When a lot of used sc discs being sold on ebay I use this as an indicator that the economy is hitting a rough spot. Over the last month or so I've seen quite a few discs. This week not so many, maybe the economy is recovering now. Any way I use this as an inexpensive way to add "new " discs to the front of my book.
I just got a message that zoom is recalling most of their discs has anyone heard this? I'm considering purchasing 100 of their songs at tricerasoft to fill a few holes in my collection. Does anyone else know about the zoom recall?
Is chartbuster doing ok with legal songs?
Does anyone know of a great Van Morrison karoke disc?
Hmm, should I break this up into separate messages?

Since I've got the karaoke computer system I've been trying to avoid purchasing discs as much as possible and using downloads. But sometimes you gotta do it for a valuable regular. One wanted "Touch My Body" and I had to get it on a disc, even though I'm not sure anything else will get used on it.
It just arrived and she'll have it for tonight.
It will be worth it.

Haven't heard anything about Zoom recalling anything. Where did you hear this? Source/link?
Chartbuster was in a legal battle not too long ago for creating songs without proper licensing.

I'm unsure how much of this is speculation and how much is fact...

This Could Be Bad News

I just got this email from a company that I recently bought some Zoom
disks from. I have heard some of this was going on, and we all know
that certain artists have put the kabosh on their music being made
into karaoke disks (Eagles, Garth Brooks, etc). I think it comes
down to fact that karaoke involves two different mediums (music and
text) and that the people who own the rights to the text havn't been
getting paid (though they often own the music as well so they would
be getting paid once but not twice). Here is the message I got.
Anyone have any other info on this?
Turmoil in the Karaoke Industry
Order your ZOOM Karaoke Discs Now!
Hello microoks,
The KARAOKE Industry is in turmoil.
You may or may not know that many karaoke discs include music and
lyrics that are not licensed for use. This resulted in considerable
litigation during the past few years. That's why:
• You no longer see discs from such companies as Music Maestro.
• Sound Choice recalled most of their discs, and now only has a
limited # of karaoke discs available.
• The Panorama and North Star karaoke lines have recently
ceased production.
• Many discs (including JUST TRACKS and POCKET SONGS) are now
being issued or re-issued WITHOUT On-Screen Lyrics.
The most significant recent development is that the rights holders
are going after deep pockets – the distributors. This will have an
enormous affect on the entire industry. It will probably eliminate
all of the `cheap' karaoke lines.
Here at Hip 2 Karaoke, we are trying to get verification as to which
karaoke disc lines are fully licensed – and which may violate the
rights of the lyric and music holders. All unlicensed lines will be
eliminated from our eBay listings. Listings will also be revised to
accurately reflect the changes brought about by these developments
(the removal of on- screen lyrics, etc.). In fact if you look at our
hundreds of Just Tracks and Pocket Songs listings, you will see those
changes.
And now … ZOOM KARAOKE has just issued a notice that they are
recalling most of their CDGs, including every disc from #95 to #130!
Our distributor still has some discs left – but they are going very
fast. Our advice is to order the ZOOM discs that you want
immediately. We will be placing 2 large re-stocking orders over the
next few days, and your purchases will included in these orders.
Because of these extraordinary circumstances – some eBay purchases
will not be filled, in which case we will cancel your order, and
(once we receive verification from eBay that you agree to the
cancellation) issue a full refund.
Good Luck!

It will be interesting to see if they do put anything out next month. Their website hasn't been updated & is now no longer available (expired security certificate) in anything that references their product.
