My Thursday night gig is going extremely well , even with the crazy contest they are running the crowds and rotation are getting bigger every week.  Last night was no exception - Large YOUNG and DRUNK crowd.  All in all they were behaving NO Fights no Arguments etc.   As a KJ what do you do when "people" stagger up to your table with drinks in hand and you can see the beer swishing around in  their glass and  then they lean over your equipment to ask you a question ?

I've thought about signs stating no drinks by kj table ?  I don't think they'll pay attention ----maybe post something in th BOOKS ? - I can't seem to think of a setup which would put my equipment out of harms way - except for BEHIND ME . but that would be hard to operate as I like to face the crowd ..maybe on the side ?

What set ups do you do to protect your equipment?

THIS RULE IS POSTED AT THE FRONT OF MY BOOK..IF I SEE A SINGER START TO COME UP WITH A DRINK I WILL INFROM HIM TO PUT IT DOWN..OVER THE MIC AND HAVE NO PROBLEMS DOING SO. AGAIN THEY ARE AT MY SHOW. YOU CANT LET THE CUSTOMER DO WHATEVER THEY WANT JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE DRINKING.  A SIGN WONT DO ANYTHING...MAKE THE ANNOUNCEMENT PUBLIC...I NOW HAVE SINGERS THAT TELL OTHERS THEY CANT TAKE DRINKS UP THERE...SEE..YOU JUST GOT TO TRAIN THEM

I have three 18" sub cabs in front of me as a kind of brickwall defense. A table is not sturdy enough in my free-for-all club. My computer and mixer are fairly safe just to my left, not in front of me.

If any of you have a method of getting singers to read your front page let me know how. All I have on mine is a statement letting them know that country and oldies are in a separate book. I still get asked that question several times a night. My only conclusion is that no one ever reads the front page of the books even though I make sure that it's always on top.

Just make a public announcement ac couple times a night that they have to leave dringks behind them when they sing or dance--as they WILL SPILL and then they will have no drink!!   Also simply hold the music for singers until they set teh drink down. EASY!

my biggest concern is when you are busy doing something - cueing a song - taking requests -etc etc and the NEXT thing you know someone is leaning over you table with a shaky hand and a full beer  :(  :( - I might have to set up in an "L" shape as this new place gives me 2 tables - keeing my equipment off to the side and the front table for meeting my customers---just not to keen on not facing the crowd as I'm mixing and announcing

I have situated things so I really don't have this problem. My equipment is away from anyone who would want to bring a drink on stage. My table with books pencils and slips is just roomy enough for my stuff. No room for a drink to be placed.

My problem is the shelve behind me. I lay the singers slips out there. People are rude enough to actually set their drinks on top of them. I only have a few people who tend to do this even though I tell them not to. My regulars have index cards with their songs on them and I don't want them getting ruined. I just move their drink completely off stage. When they go looking for it I tell them what they've done. I can't work in a space with dripping drinks all over. But at least my equipment is safe.

I have a couple places where I end up puting the table behind me. I do not like it but its better than the lean across method and being I am on floor level  in a corner it helps with space.

I just back them up the second they make their approach. They're always understanding, no matter how drunk. So far it hasn't been an issue, but it makes me cringe every time nonetheless.

Just last week, people were having a great time and they were dancing to the singer. But they all feel the need to come as close to the singer with drinks in hand as they bump and grind ...oh yeah I cringed, They are ALL understanding when I ask them not to hold their drinks over the equipment or not to put their glasses on the tables etc. BUT ALL IT TAKES IS 1 SECOND for someone to spill their beer onto my laptop or mixer     . I am trying to "teach" these youngins

I dont allow them to start singing until the drink is set down. Nor do I allow them to dance with drinks. Ill get on the mic and tell them so. They whine of course but I refuse to wipe up the spills after them. So no drinky on stage or dancing. Period.
No they dont get to do their best Dean Martin imitation.
