Wow, I just read your rules.

Ban for defacing a book?   man it happens!

Ban for dropping a mic?  People make mistakes!

It makes it sound like it's your little gig, the audience are barely tolerated and lucky to be there!

I just think there is no excuse for being stupid and being drunk doesnt cut it either

I've dropped a mic accidently completely sober.  It got stuck in the mic clip & when it released it popped out.  Didn't do it purposely.  And if you are calling someone stupid just for having an accident, then you may want to look in the mirror...accidents happen!  Must be nice to be Mr. Perfect & accident free, the real world isn't like that.

Accidents are caused by people NOT paying attention and thats no excuse. I also had one customers arrested  3 months a go for such an act..as the cops said..and I said being drunk is no excuse for being stupid. he paid $150 Court Cost plus me..

So if the scenerio I stated, which was not my fault the mic got caught in the clip & slipped out of my hand when it finally released, you'd actually expect me to pay if damage was caused...I would would more than likely offer (which I did) & the host told me flat out, oh no problem, crap happens, it wasn't like I intended to do so?  An accidental act.  Again, the excuse I was drunk wasn't a factor, I hadn't even started drinking that night...it was still early & our group was just finishing our meal.  But for you to EXPECT a customer to pay for an accidental drop is sheer idiocy!
WOW, just another reason to avoid a show like yours.  Someome that petty to call a cop on an accidental act is pretty rediculous.

Not rediculous just a no tolerance policy.....got to protect my investment...LOL

Ever hear of "insurance".
There are certain things you should just know you may have to write off.  A dropped mic is one of them.  Get good SM58's & dropped mics won't be an issue, can't kill those under normal circumstances.  Yes it's rediculous to have people arrested over an accident (which I seriously doubt any cop would take their time knowing it was an accident...a purposeful event, maybe).  Maybe you should charge the club more to have a little compensation.  Or better yet sue the bartender & the club you work in after all they are the ones creating your drunk patrons.   Then sue the liquor distillers for creating the liquor that the bars sells to make their customer drunk.
Yes you are rediculous in that last statement about the arrest over an accident.

I ALWAYS attempt to sing from a mic stand---why? because i frequently drop hand hled mics(or my tools, or cups, or TV remotes, etc etc). And why do I drop things like mics?? Because I have permanent never damage in my hands from my diabetes. So Ive become clumsy from the nerve damage. Makes it hard to handle cd's too.

So thats why I dont like hand held mics. I dont want to drop them and a mic stand solves that.

OK this has gone somewhere I'd rather not go.  Not only can I no longer agree with some of the comments made, but they made my blood run cold.

I still state that we are a tertiary industry, paid to entertain.

I will say nothing more.  Goodnight!

As to a custy dropping and damaging a mic accidently, inadvertantly--well thats simply a cost of doing business.  Ive had that happen and nothingn to be done.  Now DELIBERATE DAMAGING a mic thats another thing----custy's going to pay for that one!

Also any KJ that is using $400 Sennheiser mics for the custy's is a fool!!  Ill never use one for the custy's over 100$  Sm-58's are best for all around general custy use. Anytning more than that is overkill and the KJ is asking for problems!

Oh and what's making your blood run cold here?? was it my diabetes comment???

As to that its simply what MY situation is and maybe other custy's that some KJ's dont take into cosideration of some of thier custy's in the crowd. Nothing more.
Shouldntn make anyone squeamish.

In my KJ'ing experiences ive had to deal with much more "needs' custy's than my own situation--both young people and old.n I dont cringe about it. I simply take care of the customer and smile and make them feel welcome!! It's called TAKING CARE OF THE CUSTOMER!!

Hey Matt why dont u go to his show incognito, take a small notepad, take some notes and observations and write up a little report for us??  Ill be glad to edit it and smooth it out for you. Snap a couple pics on your cell phone too--cell phone pics are hardlyn noticed from out in the crowd. Dont introduce yourself just sit back in a corner. We could send it up to Tye in Seattle!! :) Whattaya think???  As to being BANNED from the BAR--well thats up to the BARTENDER!! If your a paying custie not causing trouble who would know--and im sure mr. KJ wouldnt know u by sight and wouldnt be expecting you!! :)

Ive done that a number of times when there was no kj or dj to talk to or in just wasnt comfortable in the place----just make a few notes and then leave--no one even knew i was there!

I just went and looked at his website---looked ok--layout good, links all worked--read the rules--most seemed ok--a couple over the top though(mics and no bringing your own discs-which curiously is Rule Number 1). At first glance its a basic decent website.

However, on closer examination:

There's one thing they need to correct ASAP:

Whoever does thier website layout NEEDS TO TAKE A DUMBELL ENGLISH 101 CLASS!!
Site is FULL OF TYPOS, POOR PUNCTUATION and POOR GRAMMAR.

Makes the entire website appear AMATUERISH and UNPROFESSIONAL.

Why did no one PROOF READ EACH PAGE BEFORE PUBLISHING IT TO THIER SITE???

It indicates a lack of ATTENTION TO DETAIL-like they were in a hurry and just slapped it together at the last minute!! Makes a person wonder what else they don't pay attention to in both thier shows and business. Certainly indicates to me that this is a company that does not inspire confidence and not one I would want to take a chance on with my expensive event!!

As a business owner I would be VERY UPSET and EMBARRASED to have this sort of shoddy work representing my business to the local, national and international public and would be ON THE PHONE TO THAT WEB DESIGNER RIGHT NOW!!

Intentional damage is one thing but accidental damage is another. My opinion is that accidents are going to happen and I leave it at that. If there is ever a question in my mind about what was intentional....video cameras don't lie. Both of the bars that I work with have elaborate high tech cameras that cover every square inch of the bars main areas. A quick replay of the digital HD can settle that right away and if someone needs to get charged for it we can collect on the spot.

I never say a word if it is accidental other than ask folks to be respectful of the equipment. That is really all you can do unless you want to be a hard liner, in that case you might as well kiss your customers goodbye LOL

Now lets see what happens when a jackbooted manager enforces a minor rule?

http://www.canada.com/edmontonjournal/n ... 906eaaf203

This happened in a city in Canada and the adverse PR for Tim Hortons was incalcuable.  I guarantee they lost millions on a 16 cent (retail) glob of fried dough.  Needless to say when Head Office found out, the policy changed immediately.

Most times you tell someone you don't do that, they will stop.  Now if they continue, especially damaging equipment, then I have no problem giving them the boot.  In the last 7 years of 6 nights a week, we haven't had to boot anyone.

Hey Swingcat, if I had a squad I would. Be interesting to see how the west coasties responded to that kind of a gig, wouldn't it. We're kind of the connoisseurs of karaoke, I think...probably more karaoke in this area than anywhere else in the country, and I've never had the misfortune to visit a show like G's. If I did, it would surely be recognized as a momentary lap of consciousness and I'd be gone before I woke up, I'm sure.  There was a host around this area for years and years who sadly isn't gigging anymore - part of the reason is his attitude - too many rules.  Takes the fun out of it, and that's why we go. Not because we miss our second grade teacher that used to slap our hands for laughing out loud. Geesh.

As ALWAYS--Timberlea is SPOT-ON in his observations.

You can bet that it was more than just the policy that got changed---like a nice letter of reprimand in the MGR's record for his INSENSITIVIY AND POOR JUDGEMENT. A nice ATTITUDE change for THAT MGR.
