The term diva is bandied about here and there to describe karaoke singers at times, sometimes in praise, sometimes in disparagement. Does everyone have a little diva (divo/devo for guys?) in them? Are a majority of singingers divas, or does it only apply to the select few? Vote your mind. Vote at the top of your lungs if you must.

If you're going to sing in public as a hobby, you have to be a little bit of a diva. If you say you're not, you're lying to yourself. Fortunately, most of us manage to keep our inner divas in check.

why qualify it "as a hobby"? I dye my hair as a direct reflection of the volatility of my nature, I am unashamedly diva inclined...

If wanting to sing any time one has the opportunity, if preferring singing in front of an audience to just about any other activity, makes one a Diva, then I guess that’s what I is!

Worst diva I ever saw...

Sundy nights, the local "big" nightclub opened their smaller bar area for karaoke. It only lasted about 3 months because there tended to be about 20 people in there - max.

Two women sat at a table - permatan, hair pulled back too tight and hideous make-up. One get's up to sing and another gets a camcorder out of her bag and kneels down to video her. I hadn't noticed at this point.

I walk across the room to the bar. You had to cross diagonally across the room as it was a weird layout and moreover really oddly setup. Between the recording girl and the stage area was about a 20ft gap...

So I walk to the bar, and I heard the "thmp" of a dropped mic. I always look to this, cos it's a sound I hate. I see the girl has stopped singing and thrown the mic down on a sidetable, both girls are looking at me like I had poo on my face. I shrug.

"Well done, you just ruined our video"
"Sorry? What?"
"We're recording this" "Yeah for telly"
"Right - ok - um, whatever - sorry!"

They then compalined to the KJ to start them again, which he did (I wouldn't have), then complained to the manager. Who then laughed at them and asked them to not video inside the club. LOL

They sat giving me evils all night. Until the KJ called my girlfriend up, who he was good friends with and sings amazingly well with. They duet all the time.

The 2 girls left.

These are the people I DO NOT cater to. As a KJ or a fellow singer.

I guess it all has to do with what diva means. To me a diva is someone who is high maintenance and thinks they are better than others. Some may say it is someone who is a good singer and entertainer. I think the media has put the negative swing on the term, but that is what I think of when I hear the word.

diva
noun (pl=dive, pl2=divas)
prima donna, the principal female singer of an opera company, or opera star.
A principal female in some other field, e.g. a prima ballerina.
Any female celebrity, usually a well known pop singer.
A person who considers herself (or by extension himself) much more important than others, has high expectations of others and becomes angry when their standards or demands are not met.

I probably don't qualify as a diva. I enjoy singing, am happy when others appreciate it, and appreciate everyone else's efforts, but attitude is something I've not had to deal with. In fact, I'm probably more critical of my own singing than anyone else, and question the credibility of someone who tells me how good I am... I'm sure not an opera star or a prima ballerina!

Probably comes down to more socially accepted semantics here as far as the term itself. I use it in jest usually with someone who self-acknowledges their 'diva status.'

In the arts, YEP ! I prefer the term "conservative", but I'm a Diva I suppose.. Still can't sing, but I've got that healthy snotty attitude :?
