Just joined. Didn't really know that much about Karaoke before, other than what you see in the occasional bar or on TV. But as of this week I've found out how much fun it can be, and if it's OK, I have some technical info to share about the experience and how this came to be.

You see, I review products for a living for all those "As Seen On TV" gadgets you see hawked on TV - but don't worry, I don't sell anything! Even all of my reviews are free. Anyway, long story short this week I receved a Karaoke product to test. I was skeptical at first. Every Karaoke machine I've ever seen in a store was rather large (bigger than a breadbox), and this thing was basically just a microphone.

It's meant to connect between any normal DVD player and a TV. The microphone has a Y-cable on it that takes the output audio track of the karaoke DVD playing and mixes in the vocals to deliver the comined signal to the TV. Your yellow video cable just conntects direct from DVD player to TV, and viola, you have a very nice Karaoke machine for less than $30 (assuming you already have a DVD player and a TV). Before long, my wife and I both were having a ball with it, and probably disturbing the neighbors (we live in a condo).

The mike comes with 3 Karaoke DVDs, but they're really just sample DVDs. We found a lot of good ones at Circuit City with a lot of our favorite songs. My wife used to sing professionally years ago, so she's in hog heaven. I did manage to convince her to do one song in my video review to show it works. You're welcome to heck it out on asotv.info. That's where all my posted reviews are.

Has anyone else used a Karaoke device like this? Or do most folks go for the bigger units that serve as DVD player as well? Incidentally, I also picked up a portable DVD player for less than $100 that I use as the DVD player so I don't have to get behind my stereo and change the connections each time we want to play with it.

Best,
Bob Gelinas

I have never used a home based system myself. I am a KJ and use a professional system. I'm sure you'd get more feedback from the Karaoke forum then in the Newbie section though. Welcome aboard !
