Lon brought up an intersting point:
---how it would begin to cut into the PROFITIABLITY of even doing a show particually in a bar----if you have a lengthly commute to get there. Lets say it takes a qtr tank to go back and forth $4 x 4 gall=$16+ per night x 2 nights a week=say $35 a week x 4 weeks/month=$140+/month
Kinda starts defeting the purpose of KJ--thats a pretty good percentage of a standard $150/night fee. Even moreso if its less than $150.
How is the commuting and paying the gas from your show proceeds affecting eveyone??

It can be an advantage if you are in a good residential hood. Then they frequent your place. A small shopping center grill/bar with good food and good karaoke/dj works real well.

I agree there are MANY places that follow that format--kinda the bread and butter of karaoke bars.

You're right, Karyoker - this may be the rebirth of neighborhoods - people can't afford to go to the big centers anymore and will be content to stay nearer home. Only good for us in rural areas.... May have to start a marketing campaign based on that issue - 'your 'hood - it's a good place!'

Regular gas is about $4.15 here. Most of my regulars live close and the few that drive a distance still seem to be making the drive. They complain about gas prices, but I still see them in the bar on karaoke nights. Knock on wood !
What I've noticed more than anything is people car pooling more. Where I live I still see an awful lot of SUVs, Hummers and big trucks still. I'm so suprised by that. People in the suburbs still play the status game though.

I know I use to have 20 or so extra spare bucks in my pockit to spend at a bar! Now that money is down to 5 $$$ Luckly the bar I play at is full of locals in a town where karaoke thrives. My income from my showes have not yet been affected form the high gas prices! I am sure that it will, beer prices have gone up!!
