Ive notice that several shows that Ive went have no intro..just calling someone up to sing or starting themselves.
I start each night out with are you "ready for this "with a talking intro just to get the crowd going..wonder how everone else starts off their show.

I don't do anything fancy. I start out by asking on the Mic, "How's everyone doing tonight at (name of place)!!!" Then, if I don't get a good enough response, I add on and repeat, "I can't hear you!!! How's everyone doing tonight!!!" After I get a satifactory response, I introduce myself and explain that, "It's Karaoke night and I'm your host for the next 4 hours."  I then explain 2 things to the crowd. I tell/ask everyone to, "Please applaud for everyone that gets up to sing. It's not easy for some people to get up in public like that." I also tell the people NOT to fill out slips with other people's names on it without their knowledge. In other words, "Don't draft someone else to sing, because you may have to get up and sing that song yourself."

Witchy! Stop being so .... you! LOL!

Back when I did my shows, I would play a video if I have a few mins early... wakes up the audience that the KJ is now in control. For fifteen minutes before that, my rules are splashed across the big screen.

A friend of mine in Oregon (recently relocated to Bend, Oregon), loved to use songs with a lengthy intrumental in the middle to turn the music down a bit and go over the house rules! I always liked that! He was just a natural on the mic, and it flowed very, very smoothly!

"Singers we're getting ready to start. Bring up your slips."

That's pretty much it from me unless I see new faces in the room. Been there steadily for almost 2 1/2 years. Every one knows who I am and what's going on.

I will have filler music playing and as I get closer to show time, I start dropping the volume on it...then when my song starts, it is noticeably louder and gets everyone's attention. Sing the song, as soon as it's over, I start lifting the filler music again, but not loud enough to block out talking...Introduce myself, thank people for coming to "@@@", that it's karaoke night, books & slips are in the big gray box...thank the hosting establishment, list any specials for the night, or their next night's entertainment, and anything else that needs announcing. I may do the same thing if I notice a tide in the crowd (originals drift out, others drift in) over the course of the evening.

Hubby always sings first song and I listen to sound....once finished, he introduces himself, says it's karaoke until tomorrow morning, reminds people to take notice of new songs in front of the books, which are by artist & title...always introduces bartender and serving staff.  Reminds people to tip them...and then he'll call me up and I'll sing so he can move throughout the entire room to get a good idea of sound for the night.

Also reminds people to please ask questions if they're unsure about something, and that if they are having trouble finding a song, please come to me and ask me, and he asks me to stand up so new singers know who I am. Keeps him from having to answer questions while he's hosting, and gives me a chance to chat up the new singers and make sure they come back.

k

Good evening everyone my name is Scott and I will be your karaoke host for the evening, Your bartenders name is Jeffery, and your servers name is Kate. We are here every Thursday for karaoke from 9:30 to Closing. There are song books out on the tables, and song slips are here at the KJ booth. So if you would like to sing your favorite tune fill out a song slip and we will get you up singing asap. Then I usually play a filler tune or two while the rotation builds. Once I have 3-4 singers in the rotation I announce "Please give a warm welcome for our first singer in tonights rotoation"  and I call their name.

I don't do a stage intro, everybody knows who I am and what I'm doing before I start. I'll play 3 upbeat songs then I'll sing 1.

If I already had song requests when it was time to start I would get on the mic and say something like. "Emily (singer's name) Sing.... Now.... (Pause)" Then whetever non-sense happend to drift out of my mouth untill the singer hit the stage.
If I had no requests up I put on 'Ol Blue Eyes and sang, explaining at the breaths that the Sinatra would continue until I got some requests. I seldom made it to the second song.

Sinatra wouldn't bother me at all. However I know a host that did that with TV themes. Most of the times it would work, on occasion it would backfire & everyone would sing the songs from their chairs.

I don't do anything grandiose. I simple let people know I'm starting, state my name if they need any help and let them know where where to find the books, pencils and slips. I sing the first song and the night begins.

I have a lot of regulars, so I usually visit with everyone before I start. The owner likes the jukebox to play instead of me playing music before I start because that brings in money.

I thought about playing an intro song, but that takes up time that a singer could be singing, so I've decided against it.

I guess I do a little more than what I said earlier. I don't really think about it, but once we're rolling I will do a bit of a welcome and give out my name. Even though they all know it.

What gets me in trouble sometimes is tabletalk when the regulars arrive instead of finishing my setup. That's when I gab the most.

When I was first starting I remember going out to this place... not the laserdisc place I mentioned before but another karaoke room. Anyway I was sitting with a bunch of people, some singers, some not. The karaoke host had a good mic voice went into a long intro that must have been several minutes long.

Afterwards, one of the singers who was talking turned to another and asked "What did he just say?"

The other said "Who knows? I just tune him out!"

The person responding with that remark was his girlfriend.

I'll never forget that. It keeps my intro short.

Pretty basic intro.
Welcome everybody out to the club & the show. Annnounce my name, tell people that want to sing where the books & slips are, if they can't find a song, i'll be happy to look it up for them. Announce all bar staff of the evening. Any specials going on or special events for the night. Start out the first song & go from there.

Sometimes I announce, that I've had a rough day, and I'm really tired, and I hope we don't have anybody here wanting to sing, so I can just play some mellow music to relax .......this really gets them going, and they start bringing up song slips by the handfulls......just to pizz me off, and make me work.....works every time...

I tried playing " Are you ready for this?" in my karaoke infantsy(which I've never progressed out of... :) ).....and they would always holler.......cut the crap, and just call someone up to sing, will ya a$$hole....we'd like to get a song or two in before the nights over........and in those days, they actually liked me..... :?

I tried singing the National Anthem a few times for openers....but I....kept messin' up the words.....

I tried....take me out to the ball game......but I could never get on pitch....what's with that song? :P

It depends on the crowd but starts off with mic checks. We do sound check 30 minutes before show and play 30 min of low dinner music. If there is just a few singers in I will talk to them over the mic as if I were sitting at their table. If the place is fairly packed I will cut up and get the energy level started. Whether on the mic or in person we find out if there are any birthdays in the house. Singer or non.. A good opener makes and establishes the mood of the entire show. Most KJ'S Ive seen either are too formal or totally quiet. We are not formal or have canned intros or outros It varies with the crowd.

I hadnt sang in a certain bar in years and we got a spot gig there. I was first singer and the first words out my mouth. (I didnt have a clue when I walked up to to the stage)
Ya know years ago I fell in love with a chubby blonde right there on the dance floor. Somebody yelled out That was a mistake. I said you got that right she drove me nuts for 3 years. I had an instant repoirt with the crowd.
