This might not be a question for this forum, but I have got some excellent advice from you guys in the past - so here it is...

I run my karaoke out of a laptop, which also doubles as my midi player for one man shows.

I use an external Creative Live Audigy Sound card with an Edirol sound canvas to play my midi. I have used Cakewalk Pro in the past, to run my midis and manage the soundfont, however I find that it is a resource hog, and is not really apt for what I am using it for.

Can anyone suggest another good player which will also manage the soundfont?

Thanks

Vic in Sydney

well years ago before I started buying discs to use cdg for backing, I used to entertain using midi.
I used an yamaha xg daughter board that clipped onto my soundcard. It turned the sound of an ordinary soundcard into something quite special. It did mean that I had to learn to edit my midi tracks cos the drum is a different number in xg than gm but aside from that it worked very well. But the sound of midi coming from my old 486 was more like full instrumentation and not midi-sounding at all
I would recommend talking to your local audio specialist about an xg sound canvas...yamaha keyboards for instance are xg. Hey I may be barking up completely the wrong tree, but its just my 2c.

I converted everything over to type 1 Standard Midi Files and play them with just Windows Media Player, which plays SMFs.

I don't know what's in your soundfonts but I put all setup info (c.c.'s, bank select, program changes, sysex) in track headers before converting and they all made it into the SMFs.

This is really old tech. I'm sure there are other solutions these days. But lately I've been involved in this karaoke thing I've fallen into.

If you're asking for software to play midi's with, try this site. PS I am not familiar with the term "soundfont". This software is excellent for playing minis
