Well, I'd been a singer in bands for years, so it was no stretch to make the leap to karaoke, but my first ever song was one of three: Prince - When Doves Cry, Kansas - Dust in the Wind, or Bon Jovi - Wanted Dead or Alive. Those were the only three songs I did for a loooong time. I branched out after I started going on a regular basis, expanding my repertoire up to about 10-15 songs, and since starting my own biz, I've probably sung upwards of 500 different songs.

My first song was
Like a virgin - Madonna
It was aweful and I haven't sang it since and will never sing it again. That was about 14 years ago in a little bar in Arizona...

Would have been sometime around September 1994.
The place was called O'Toole's. It was a karaoke bar
located just south of 82nd & Center Street in Omaha.

fire and rain by james taylor it looked easy but as most first timers i was nervous as hell and when you hear yourself thru a monitor for the first time you think i thought i sounded better than that. well before long i got it down.....cal

My first time was in a hole in the wall bar in Jamestown, NY. I was there on business and didn't know a soul in the bar save the desk clerk at my hotel who had invited me to meet her for some drinks. Of course she pestered me to sing and I eventually relented figuring that even if I bombed it wasn't like I would ever see anybody there again.
So I put in a slip for "Good Hearted Woman" by Waylon Jennings and promptly got lost about halfway through when the tempo of the song went into triple time (I'd never heard the live version before). Sure, I got some polite golf claps from the crowd. Just the same, I wasn't happy. So, using the logic that if I was going to suck, I might just as well suck out LOUD, I put in a slip for Kashmir.
Well, needless to say, Kashmir went a whole lot better. In fact, it went over like nothing I've ever seen since. This club had dinner tables surrounding the stage where patrons could sit and watch the singers. Well, halfway through the song I noticed that a whole group of patrons were banging their heads a la "Wayne's World" off the tables they were sitting at. As the song closed, the bar erupted and people were giving me high fives as I walked back to my date.
Like I said, I've never quite seen that reaction since. In fact, I reckon I'm a bit like an adrenaline junkie chasing that original high oh those many years ago.

Mine was "you are my sunshine" ... at a restaurant. I wasn't game to go up by myself so I asked my brother in law if he would sing the melody if I sang the harmony with him. My first song was "The End Of The World" by Skeeter Davis, November 1996. I was 43 years old and hadn't been in any bars since the late 70's. I was so nervous the mic was shaking. Got applause so I signed up again and became a regular.

"Fire & Rain" does sound easy, but certainly not! I've sung it a lot, but I still am not sure I've mastered the timing!!
