Here the karaoke scene is fairly saturated most of the small bars have a show on fri. or sat. nights but they mostly don't advertise so you have to find them. the bar I usually go to changed kj's and the crowd changed so I don't get out as much dave

My DJ/KJ style has taken over most of the area here. The true 100% karaoke shows are dropping like flies.
I have been karaoke heavy lately. I been 40+ slips in the 4 hour nights and 60+ on the 6 hour night.

Virtually every product/service has a life-cycle. Some ebb and wane (i.e. bowling, roller skating, skateboard parks); some surge and then disappear forever! Some disappear without ever surging.
I don't think it can be said that karaoke is on the upswing. So, those with other assets/services in addition to Kj'ing will have the best chance of surviving as a karaoke provider.
However, whose to say that karaoke won't someday be done via an internet "Jukebox" system? Such systems have already replaced some DJ's. So, imho, those of us who offer only karaoke will facilitate the onset of such a "jukebox" system, because the difference between a "pure" karaoke KJ and the "jukebox" will be almost indiscernable. A venue would just have to have one of their employess manage the rotation and push the remote control for their karaoke "jukebox". And, no KJ, could compete with the size and up-to-date selection offered by the internet service!

On the other hand, regarding machines versus hosts, there is little chance of establishing that show loyalty without the human touch. It is the host who inspires that feeling-good feeling thing that comes from singing and being complimented for it. It is the host who urges someone who might not ever sing, to sing and find they really enjoy it. It is the host who makes sure people have a good time resulting in the bartenders and servers making more tips. It is the host who gives people a reason to come back week after week because those singers appreciate that personal touch. It is the host that establishes camaraderie between singers, between the singers and the staff of an establishment, and between the singers and the host. A machine can't do that.
Add to this, how many of us have lifelong friendships that have come to us through karaoke? Either meeting at shows or, as hosts, become friends with our singers? Very, very important part of the karaoke PR business, and 99% of the reason that folks attend a karaoke show. Can you imagine this conversation: "Did you like the machine at such-and-such's place? It worked well, didn't it? I'll go back because I like a machine that works well."
Interesting that this comparison is being made. I do medical transcription for a living. We live under the constant fear of software that will displace us, thinking for a minute that medical providers using voice software could do actually produce medical record that would stand up in a court of law. When it passes through the second thinking process (the medical transcriptionist), the errors are picked up and corrected. Those who have a terrible command of the english language (syntax, grammar, etc.) actually sound INTELLIGENT by the time we're finished their reports. But I digress....
I don't see any of our hosting establishments EVER thinking they could be more successful by replacing us with a big karaoke jukebox machine. Entertainment is not something that is ever going to be done by a machine...ever....

I wasn't suggesting that there would be successful karaokes show using just a jukebox, but rather that any venue could hire/designate an employee to run the show using nothing more than a remote control.
