This is another no - no ...not that we are not grateful but when you start excepting tips sometime...not all...people think they can be bumpped up in the rotation or get to sing the last song and that does not happen.
anyone wanting to tip is directed to tip the bar staff and waitress...they do a great job...

I have a tip jar. I didn't use one in the beginning. People would hand me tips and I'd feel wierd about it. Then one night one of the bartenders told me I should have one and made one from a beer pitcher. I've used one ever since.
I never take tips as a bribe. Most people tip me when they are leaving because they know tips won't get them pushed up in rotation. It's rare someone tips and ask for special treatment. If they do I give back the money explaining things don't work that way here. They usually tip anyway and respect the fact no one gets special treatment.
I also never mention the tip jar or tipping me. I feel if someone wants to tip me they will - it is their decision.

I like that you keep an open mind - that's cool.
I don't feel the bartenders are getting shorted though. People tip for good service. If the bartender is giving good service I believe people will tip them accordingly.
When you don't take bribes and people tip you at the end of the night it is usually the money they have left after tipping the bartender.

Always accepted tips. No reason not to. Our bartenders & waitresses actually started it by grabbing the jar & passing it around - THIS I did feel uncomfortable with & had them stop it (although they netted me one night over $100). Plus half the time it goes back to the bartenders anyway because I will tip them out as well if I made tips - not because I have to, but rather want to.
If someone WANTS to give a tip, fine but shouldn't be expected to or feel pressured to. Also if someone gives me an indication that the tip is for anything other than a thank you, I will hand them their money back & say no thanks.

The only time I accept tips if after my normal quitting time, if the crowd wants me to play over, and it is OK with the bartenders.
Usually someone in the crowd will pass the hat, and I gauge my OT by how much I get in tips. It usualy ends up being an extra 1/2 hour for about $30.
Other than that I don't accept tips, i tell the tippers to tip the wait staff instead.

I've been in the biz long enough that people know I would NEVER take a bribe to move someone up in the rotation, unlike a lot of the renegades around here who do...and right in front of everyone.
On the other hand, if a person wishes to thank me monetarily for a great job, I think it is a direct insult to them not to accept it. I know that when I hand someone a tip for any service they may have done for me, i.e. cutting my hair, pouring me an extra tasty drink, serving me a meal, I do it because I appreciate the effort they have gone to to make their service stand out.
I understand the discomfort about accepting it hand to hand...at times that can be uncomfortable, but if you gush with smiles and thank them profusely for coming in, that kind of takes away the discomfort level a little.

I got the tip jar, but dont make a big deal about it. I hate going to shows where someone walks around with the jar collecting tips for the kj.

The world is also run by supply and demand. Post too many stupid rules at your show and you'll find that rule slapping you upside the head.

When my daughter was in about 3rd grade, 'whatever' was what they said when they couldn't talk their way out of a predicament. It's pretty hilarious hearing (reading, in this case) it from someone who is apparently older than about 8 or 9??

Interestingly, I've never seen this practice until I started a new show. The manager actually came on stage and did it on my behalf. I also don't like to "beg" for tips, but do have a jar for those who want to use it. Some singers will come and hand me cash, which I'll put in the jar for them.
But should a KJ automatically get tipped...or should they provide some extra attentive "service" for the singer to EARN that gratuity?
I do my best to tweak the levels and effects throughout the song - especially when the instrumentation of the track goes up and down in loudness. I consider that part of being a good host, and what the boss pays me to do anyway.

In the beginning I did not accept tips. Don't know why, maybe I thought I was making pretty good $$
Then a customer purchased a really nice Crystal Tip Bowl for me and put took of my song slips with the words "Tips Are Good" written on the back in bold sharpie letters, and then taped it on the face of the Bowl. That night I got like $50 and at first it was really strange, but I found a good use for the money. Anything I get in tips I buy in new music, and the rest is used to update the song books etc.
I will never take a bribe to move anyone up in the rotation...EVER!

A "TIP" is an act of generosity from a customer in gratitude of a JOB WELL DONE. NOTHING MORE(See also: GRATUITY).
A TIP IS NOT:
1. Expected
2. Compulsory
3. Asked for
4. Demanded
5. Solicited
6. Required
7. Begged for
8. Hustled
9. A BRIBE, PURCHASE or RENTAL OF YOURSELF
Tips for the DJ are just that-tips for the DJ.
They are not for the waitresses or bartenders. They dont share thier tips with you and niether should you be required to share with them unless you feel generous towards them. If they are demanding that you share with them, then you need to have a talk with that manager and let them know they need to knock it off.
Now I have had bartenders tip me--for helping them clean up on a real busy night---but that was stricktly from the kindness of their heart as they appreciated the help and not somthing I demanded of them.
Attempting to be bumped up for money is simply a bribe.
That is NOT tipping.
That is BUYING YOU and letting everyone else know you can be BOUGHT--AND CHEAPLY AT THAT. It is demeaning and compromises your PERSONAL INTEGRITY.
To refuse a tip from someone to my mind is acting rude to them and not acknoledging thier gratitude for the fine evening and entertainment you provided them and the enjoyment they had. Its their way of saying THANK YOU!!
To refuse a tip to my mind is very rude and should never be done.
A very grateful and humble THANK YOU is the correct response!!

in NZ the only people who tip are American tourists
mind you I have been paid 50% again over and above my fee for a job well done...happened just the once but thats the sort of tip you remember the rest of your life
