If i have a good crowd to start I usually hit the offsprings "disclamer" its track 1 on Ixnay on the Hombre. those who actually listen to it laugh there heads off. those who dont just here a quick ramp up track before i intro myself ect.
they also have a track called "intermission" on that track that I have on my presets to play if somebody starts wasting time getting to the stage. It has gotten to be known that if I hit that one an it gets over and youre still jerking around you might not be singing. depends on the rotation.

I used to end the night with the following:
You don't have to go home but you sure as hell can't stay here.
Also, remember one thing, Alcohol and gasoline don't mix, so please don't drink no damn gasoline.
ROTFLMAOPMP I didn't type "gosh darn".

Once I'm set up, I'll start playing some upbeat music. About 10 minutes before my start time I'll welcome everyone, let them know where the books, slips and pens are and announce what information needs to be on their request slip.
I'll sing the first song which also lets me tweak the volume levels and make sure that everything sounds as it should. As I'm not a superstar singer, I think it also communicates that you don't have to sound like a recording artist to get up there and have some fun.

If im alone I do the first song, otherwise i let my partner do it while i tweak knobs. then I do one to show that we don't have to be fantastic singers..

Any specials going on or special events for the night. Start out the first song & go from there.
This is almost identical to what I do.
I have a pretty dry, yet quirky wit, so I throw out some one-liners to loosen people up while spinning some tunes.
A lot of times I end up having to play music for a bit, because I usually wait until I have four or five singers, then I get up and do one, and we move on to the regular rotation from there.

WTF? Kind of an assinine response because you don't like others intros. Maybe others do not have to put on glitz & have to do outlandish intros to actualy bring people to their shows, they bring people because of their personality & the way they can handle & work WITH people.

I agree to a point but I do know from personal experience that do stuff that set a show a part bring people...I have also used snow machine..bubbles..as effect during so and this has brought in people because it different..I think alot of KJ just do plain karaoke and never push the edge...this also can make or brak you as a show

NO energy=boring. Gotta do SOMETHING other than: "Im BOB the KJ" heres the slips". If machines help then do so. Myself I dont have time to monkey with smoke or bublles etc. I just get the energy and party started and the rest takes care of itself.

Those who have actually spent any time at all in the music industry, either behind the scenes or out front, understand the value of using music with finesse. It is possible to radically change the atmosphere in a room by changing the format, type, and volume of music.
Of course each room is different, but I will suggest that putting on DVDs of great concerts (age dependent - could be Korn, could be Iron Maiden, could be Neil Diamond) 30 minutes before the show will get people involved. Some people cannot be in a room with a television in it without getting sucked in. If you are playing crowd-appropriate music, people will automatically switch gears in their brain to singing. Who doesn't want to emulate their favorite performer? Isn't that why we do karaoke?
Switching to the right kind of music at the correct volume just minutes before the show will get people's attention and they don't even necessarily know that they've switched gears and are now focusing on singing. This is especially the case if you are playing pre-show music of songs that you actually have in your library - they can listen an extra time to a song they'd like to and actually decide they're ready to sing it. (I do DJ'ing as well, more and more of it now, and understand how important it is to understand the psychology of music, and what kinds of music get people involved...haven't read any studies, but I'm sure they're out there.) Funny enough, when it's time for one our gigs to end and last call has been done, bartender puts smooth jazz on the house system....just like a lullabye, and definitely plants the idea that it's time to go home.
There, of course, is an element of the population that does require that sort of carnival amusement park entertainment. You can spend waaaaay too much money on that sort of thing without needing to, IMO.

DVDs of great concerts, I like it. I may try that. The bar where I play has two section and I play in the back. I'll play three songs that may not be "dance music" but will be a fun, up beat or something people may not heard for while.
Karen I believe you have very good understanding of what makes a good atmosphere.
