Best Tip Ever'
years ago I was putting up a TV antenna for a lil old lady in a quiet neighborhood. In typical seniors fashion when I gave her the bill she disappeared into another room. Then came out and counted and paid with the exact change. Then she handed me a quarter and my helper a quarter and said you boys go have a beer on me!!! We thanked her and left. We giggled all the way back to the shop.

Sorry off topic -
I have one for ya Ollie - One night I dumped out my tip jar and found a tampon in it. Not used - thank goodness.
I never count on my tips, but I have to say I have become accustomed to them. Usually I average about $60 - $100 a week. Some days I may only see a couple bucks in there - I never know what I'll get. It also seems on slower nights i'll make more tips. It makes sense - why would you tip a lot if you only got to sing once all night. So the harder I work the less tips I receive. Kind of wierd that way.

You meet some of the most agreeable people in Kmart..
Maybe it's a Kansas thing. But most professionals around the country disagree with you both
I'm so glad you found someone who agrees with your rules. At least you will have one customer....Right?

Those who have tryed to bring disc maybe 5% of the aud so it really hasnt been a big deal...you know its funny because there hasnt been a problem with tha issue here and wont be.
The only one I hear having a cow is on here... ....
Also I dont have a problem with anyone disagreeing with me but I draw the line at personal attacks

I actually make enough in my gig to be able to do so.

Well there's a big difference between DJing, where you choose the music that's played and KJing, where the customers choose the music that's played.
I love that you are SO concerned about rudeness and respect, yet from what you've shown on here you seem to make a concerted effort to live your life in a way that ensures you'll receive maximum rudeness and minimal respect from the people you encounter. Maybe if you stopped being such an a$$hole all the time you'd find that you won't have to worry about it so much. You'd be amazed how much nicer people will be to you when you're not acting like a busybody 80 year old woman.

Well Gemini you should really get outside of Salinas once in a while. You would find many folks who would disagree with you. Either your customers are not major karaoke enthusiasts or they just go along with you because it's too far to the next karaoke place.
It must be only the people on this forum who have the problem....that's it...
OMG your pathetic... (in my opinion of course)

I've had people bring in their own discs maybe two or three times total over the last year, and in each case, I already had the tune, so it wasn't necessary. My biggest problem with bringing their own discs is that I run my show strictly off the laptop, and while I'm not opposed to ripping a song on the spot if I don't already have it, I'd imagine it might be a bit distracting. Plus I wouldn't have the ability to check the quality of the rip, which would drive me crazy.
I'll absolutely do it, but like I said, so far it hasn't been a problem.

If your night gig isn't paying enough to pay for itself, then you're already doing something wrong.
I have a day job, I work as a marketing exec, which I soon plan to give up to work for myself in events management. However, the funds from this don't touch the karaoke side.
Now, you say that those who bring their own disks represents about 5%? Think on is all that I say tho that!
5% is not a trivial number. Moreover, think about demographics. Those with their own disks are enthusiasts - the people likely to affect a following - the people likely to make recommendations.
Look, it has gone so far now that this is all moot - you are not open to understanding the facts put out. You quote a conversation with a random noe-time DJ in K-mart to backup your claims!
You started this thread as a bit of a rant, and nobody really agrees. Get over it!

I've spoken with many people in both Kansas and Missiouri, Nebraska, Iowa... Gem is in the minority. Of all the outfits in KC, only one refused my discs.
And gee whiz, the venue they were at complained that karaoke wasn't working for them. When they found out about their no disc rule, they promply hired someone else that was friendlier to the customers.

Ban for defacing a book? man it happens!
Ban for dropping a mic? People make mistakes!
It makes it sound like it's your little gig, the audience are barely tolerated and lucky to be there! The little known Ban for asking host if you can use your own disc...... Wouldn't surprise me.
Not yet but i might... honestly I started putting a sign on the KJ table so the No disc is in plain sight.
Further more I never ask if anyone like the policy that not the issue here ....it was a way to share different ideas on the way others do show...if you dont agree thats not a problem ...but.... personal attacks toward me are... you do not know me or have never been to my show...so I think you need to save judgement till youve been here...the way you see me here and in person are different ...you might be really surpised

Gem, it's called a first impression thing.
You don't want to LEARN new ways or even accept that someone else might have a better idea than you. I've LEARNED and grown on these forums.
I went into this field with eyes open, but with a firm idea on how I want to run things. I've asked questions and accepted criticism when it was necessary.
The difference is, you don't have an open mind when it comes to others that have differing viewpoints. In your mind, it's your way or the highway.
Have you ever ASKED your patrons if they like your rules. especially about the no bring cdgs? Granted we're talking Salina here... but in larger metro areas, stores SELL karaoke discs! Kmart certainly does, but it's a limited selection at best.
I'm certain if your customers knew that they had an OPTION, they might avail themselves of the World Wide Web, and buy what they want. As Cuey said, (paraphrasing here) he's into a lot of unusual melodies, some that hosts like yourself and others, may not be into. It's a TREAT when I've hung with him, as I KNOW he's unusual and loves to show people HOW unusual.
How can he do that at a venue where you control what is played? You credit yourself for having a large selection, but I bet I have other songs you don't have. I bet OTHER singers and KJS have other songs you don't have.
It doesn't matter that you have all or most of a certain artist... what if that customer knows and likes a certain version, one you don't have?
