I believe that you don't have to put up with verbal or physical abuse while hosting. I had a guy a couple months ago threaten to "kick my @$$" if I didn't get him up. I had one of my good friends watch my equipment while I invited the "gentleman" outside. All of a sudden he didn't want to "kick my @$$" anymore, since I stood up to him.

I have had issues similar to your bad night. It's part of the job, but so is reacting.

I had a real drunk guy threaten me like that, and I told him I fight much better than I sing, and he replied, "well, then if that's the case........ let's go outside".... guess I set the bar a bit low on that one....

Sometimes people work late and can't get to your venue before midnight. Or maybe they're waiting on friends, or went to dinner and a show before coming in. If you've got 22 singers in your rotation, your show ends promptly at 2AM, and a new singer turns in a slip at midnight, you're going to make them wait until the end of the night before they get to sing?

No offense, but this is a great way to alienate potential NEW customers. I get compliments all the time on my show. Sometimes regulars filter out over time for whatever reason, but I've never had a problem bringing in new regulars, because they feel like part of the show from the first time they walk in. If I walked into a bar and had to wait through 20 singers - who all seemed to be regulars - before getting to sing for the first time, I wouldn't come back.

As with all things karaoke, your mileage may vary.

as I said, I don't mind waiting 20 singers. I may leave, but I congratulate them on their success.

I'm not about to tick 20 people off by insisting someone who spent money somewhere else, or otherwise wasn't there when the karaoke started, and didn't pay to keep it going.

I'm all for understanding individual explanations why they couldn't be there earlier. I've spent the bulk of my life working shift work, and certainly don't expect special treatment because of that.

Just a quick report on last night (Sat).

It was good for a Saturday with rotation in the upper teens (a good hour out and then some) practically the whole night. Everyone was so nice to me. I had no whiners. None. A couple of singers asked "How are you doing?" and I said "I'm doing good" and that was about it.

The doorman came up to me and said "If anyone ever gets in your face again motion me over. You are not supposed to deal with that. That's my job."

I asked around about the guy with the Chartbuster discs and no one owned up to knowing him, although I think one lady did but didn't want to admit it. But I did pass on to those who go to other venues to let him know that if he wants to try it again I can get it to work... no hard feelings on my part. His first song was "Workin' Man Blues" so he'll probably be more at home at the strictly country karaoke room anyway though.

And as for those country singers from the other place: The first two got in (placed in slots vacated by earlier singers who left) and the rest were added to the end of the round. The others never made it up. My room is not their home room and I have my regulars (who make my job possible) to look after. It was just a coincidence that the first two that I did insert were who they were... singers who have supported my shows in the past... or they would have been placed at the end of the round also.

Bill thanks for the update

My Friday nights are usually where people get impatient, so I try to stop it before it starts. If I know there is a long wait I usually thank everyone for being patient over the mic and acknowledge the long wait before they start whining.

If someone asks how long a wait. I show them where they are in the line up. I too never specify a time.

Any KJ that has been on the job for a length of time has dealt with wanting to lose their cool and can sympathize with your dilema. I know I've blown up before. You hold yourself to a higher standard that is good, but we are only human.

Thanks for the support Babs. And Eric.

And Flipper how did your Rose Festival gig go? I've never made the trip to Portland during Rose Festival but I've seen news clips and it must have been a zoo! Probably makes my little night look like a stroll in the park.

It as a big success we had about 310 Officers, Sailors, and their guests from US and Canadian Ships and it was basically a 7hr karaoke marathon. I put an additional hour of DJ Dance Music in their throughout the day and evening to break it up.

There were some hard core Karaoke singers from the ships and it was a ton of fun.

Here are some pics:

This is the third year I have done this gig and we decided that next year we are moving me upstairs to the Main Auditorium which holds 250-300 more comfortably and I won't feel so boxed in. I was basically in living in "Fear" that my equipment would make it through the night with all the beer and drinks being consumed. They just kept getting closer to th KJ station as the night progressed. I felt like spam in a can...LOL

These guys and gals had been out to sea for 90 days and were ready to party!

And boy did they..LMAO

Thanks for posting Scott! Wow!!!

Yeah it looks like you need a bigger room. From the pics that one looks more like a long hallway.

Did you use your L1 for this? Does it cover something this large?

Also you might want to ask admn (Phill?) to put this in it's own thread. I'm fine with it being in the one I started.... that's cool. But it's a few days old and you might get more views and comments that way.

I am so jealous When we got in we had to sing with the jukebox. And to do this gig would be a dream...

I did use the Bose L1 for the event! It worked really great!
The one thing about the Bose is that regardless of volume level you can hear the singers and music from everywhere in the room.

This particular room was about 40ft wide x 75ft long then it "L'd" off into a small bar. They also have a beer garden area off the main room where the BBQ's and tables with umbrellas were. I rec'd plenty of comments on sound and the ability to hear throughout the facility. Of course I'm deaf for a couple of days later as I had limited setup room for my system so it was to my right and behind me. This place had low ceilings so acoustically the room was a nightmare but the Bose did good! If I would have had room an extra L1 would have been nice but it worked out great.

Hey Ollie -

You are welcome to come to Portland next year and assist me with the gig if you would like. I'm sure we could arrange someplace to stay while you are here. This has been happening for 5 years and I have been involved for 3 of them. I'm already booked for June 2009. So let me know if you would like to be involved.

There is plenty to do here during Rose Festival weeks...Here's some links:

Sorry that you lost your cool, I've done the same in the heat of the moment. Sometimes you react before you think........However people also need to know that you mean business and your equipment is a huge investment for you and they should treat it with respect. I had a incident that I didn't handle wll on Friday night. I had a group sing my favorite song "love shack" and when it got to the part about "knock a little louder"....yep, this wonderful woman thought it would be great to bang the microphone on the table for a little added effect. This happened several times, the 1st time I didn't know what was going on....just heard the noise...looked up and was instantly irrate as she was banging away. Looking back, I should've killed the music right there, don't know wtf I was thinking....Thank God for the SM58's, no damage done that I'm aware of..worked fine Sat & Sun. I also try not to give a estimated time when someone asks about "how long", I just say....I'll get to you as soon as I can......MrD
