This particular issue deals with a wedding, but it could be any type of private party. I did a wedding this weekend for an old friend. Proably for 1/2 of what they could've gotten from someone else. Even though, it was waaaay out of the way, meaning I spent over $125 in gas driving there and spending the day. I had figured I'd do it for the amount I would've made at the bar that night, plus gas. The issue was that 2/3 of their planned crowd didn't show up. I mean 30 people max (& 10 were kids). I spent most of the night playing to 10 people who didn't care if I was there or not and I felt horrible, knowing that they couldn't afford it (they had mentioned they almost called and cancelled at the last minute). We had a good time hanging out and the food was awesome, but they were both hurt because 'their day' was basically ignored by the people they expected to be there. I seriously almost felt like I was stealing....:(

That is a tough situation. I always give close friends and family a deal also. I do like you, charge what I'd be losing for not doing my normally scheduled gig. I figure there is nothing wrong with that being you wouldn't ask them to lose a days pay to do a favor for them.

Just think what you'd have to charge them if they weren't friends. You just gave them a gift of a few hundred dollars.

I recently did a party for close friends too. I was on my feet doing karaoke for 8 hours in hot humid weather when I could have been in an air conditioned bar for a 5 hr gig. Not to mention tearing down and setting up which I don't have to do at my bar gig. I charged them the same amount of money I would have made at the bar. Plus I gave the graduate a monetary present.

WOW - same situ here this weekend.

The bride asked for 80s, the groom said he didn't know anything about music - so I just played her stuff. People sat there looking at me...

Eventually I decided, hey lets liven it up, went to some dance, and it got a bit better. But even the usual floor fillinf tunes just died. And one woman just kept looking at me saying "What are you playing?"...

Horrid night!

I've had those bad nights before. I do a LOT of weddings and high school gigs, and no matter how many you've done, there's just no reading EVERY crowd.

I performed a wedding a couple months ago, and it took so long to get through dinner and everything else, that large groups of people were leaving en masse by the time the actual partying started. The bride and groom were there for about the first 45 minutes, but disappeared, as did their wedding party, and a good chunk of family. I was faced with having to perform from about 10:30-12 for roughly 15 people, who decided to stick it out. It was awful, especially when my disc containing the Cha Cha Slide decided to crap out and I didn't have my laptop with me. Ugh. I ended up stopping at 11:15, a full 45 minutes early.

These people were not friends, so I didn't really feel bad for stopping early when the "crowd" dropped down to less than 10 (I located the groom outside and asked if it was okay), but I did feel bad that the party fizzled so quickly. This is precisely why I make it a point when meeting with the couple beforehand to let them know that stalling things will result in the same. Don't dilly dally. Get right to the party or expect people to leave.

I did one of those booring deals this weekend too. mine was due to thunderstorms and tornado warnings. Ive known the guy fer like 15 years. so I charged what I would have made otherwise at my normal job. I did not feel bad over taking his money, but he is pretty wealthy, owns a car lot. when I bought my pickup from him I know he made more than I did saturday.

My partner had a good one sat night. they had so much fun they paid him 50 an hr for 2 extra hours. he told me he played his mp3 plater most of the night..sometimes its fun and easy.
