I was dating a high country farmer for a couple of years...no electricity, the property was only accessable by 4wd cos you had to cross the river 8 times...so sometimes there was no access except by helicopter if it was in flood. Cooking was done on a coal range. Sheep shearing was all hand blade shorn. horse back was the most reliable transport.
I loved the place but as the old saying goes where one door closes another opens and I sure as hell wouldnt have sung if I had lived there permanently

Ah, yes, she's one of my favorites. I have pretty much all of her cd's (even the 90's era ones where she was mostly country, not bluegrass) Matter of fact, she's what is blaring on my cd player in my SUV right now:) It's a mixed cd I made of all my favorites of hers. Though, nobody will ever come close to Emmylou Harris in my opinion, I've been a fan of hers since I was a tot.

I've met her (Rhonda Vincent) the last 2 years in a row at our local bluegrass festival I worked at (River City BG Festival, in Portland) She's very nice in person, the kind of lady who comes out in the crowd and visits with everyone. Each year, she does a Saturday concert, then on Sunday morning she does a bluegrass gospel set, it's nothing short of awesome. If you haven't already- and ever get the chance to- don't miss seeing her live. Saw Emmylou there too, but didn't get to meet her in person... this year I did meet Marty Stuart tho, that was cool.
Sounds like you are really into your bluegrass Mandi ,no doubt.I would like to see Rhonda if see came around again.I think she performed at the Birchmere in Va. before, so I will continue to watch their schedule (fabulous place for music).Since I don't know a lot about bluegrass ,it was nice to hear that she is one of your favorites too. That confirms for me that I did'nt buy her DVD because of her looks,lol.
As for the Sunday thing ,for my money you can't have a bluegrass show without having some gospel music.I think that is the meat and potatoes of bluegrass ,and a huge part of the appalacian history.Some of that stuff is so raw ,it could send shivers up your spine.

Jim- I know what you mean. Apparently, lots of the homes (shacks) aren't even accessible by automobile, you have to have an ATV or walk to reach the more hidden areas. Still, I'd love to go visit there. No indoor plumbing? Well, when I was born my family lived in a huge army tent on the back of my father's boss' acreage on a farm in Texas.. I was 6th of 9 kids. Same thing, water was hauled, toilets were down the hill in an outhouse in the pasture.... later on, when we were at my grandparent's place, we had running water- but still an outhouse. I recall putting fresh hay over the fence to distract the bulls in the field, so I could run to the outhouse without having to dodge them. (they were mean, Lol) Sounds so *backwoods* in these days, but, I think I could handle it for vacationing purposes;)

Like I said, someday, I'll get to go there. From what I've heard and read, time kinda stands still up there, they haven't modernized much at all over the decades.

What did you do for fun or entertainment with no satellite on the roof?

When I was growing up my grandparents on my mother’s side lived in the Appalachian Mountains. We lived in less than a 100 miles away but visiting them was like going to a different world. It was a world without indoor plumbing were water was carried from a creek in pails. It was also were my grandfather had his church and the music was so different in his church. There was no organ or piano, but there were guitars, mandolins, tambourines, and something I think was called a lap harp. The music they played was kind of an unrefined bluegrass gospel. I am mostly a country music fan but I like bluegrass especially when its performed live. When its live I can’t help but remember that church music.

The true name for a lap harp is a Psaltery, a very unique instrument which can be either plucked or played with a bow (or two bows if you're VERY good). I took Mike to the Appalachian Festival a few weeks ago and of course he had to have one (thought he was gonna go for a dulcimer but went with the psaltery instead). Many times in bluegrass music when you can't quite pick out what you're hearing it's probably a psaltery, it has a very haunting sound when played with a bow (the resonance of the notes).
