......Ok...I know some of you use discs which is fine, but those of you using a Hard Drive,How many songs do you have? How many is enough?...I have 200 gig of zip files....around 55,000 total songs, but bear in mind certain songs will be by different companies,so one song will be there by sunfly,Legends,Sound choice etc..even Pioneer! I often think there is TOO much choice, what does everyone else think??

I think you didn't pay what they are worth. 55,000 songs should cost you in the vicinity of $55,000 or more. Anything substantially less is in my view theft. The cost of a cd or vinyl or tape is a very minor portion cost of an album. The rest of the cost is promotion, wages, copyright, and yes that dirty word profit, etc.

Have to agree with Tim's speculation.
As far as if it's enough, it's MORE than enough to run a show. I could probably run a successful show NIGHTLY with 1,000 well chosen songs. All the multiple versions of songs listed just confuses people 90% of the time. Why list them? No one needs to see that a kj has the biggest selection of Friends In Low Places & The Rose and other songs listed 5 or more times each. I'd rather them see that I have a large selection of non-duplicated song titles.

I don't even advertise how many songs I have anymore. It really makes no difference between my show and the next guys. I know KJ's who have legally purchased over 50K songs and it is a major investment. I also know of KJ's who have come by their songs in an illegal fashion. The fact is that it makes little to no difference in whether folks come to their shows or mine.
I have well over 15K songs and frankly my show is just as good as it was when I had 6500. The customers still bring in discs with songs I don't have and they will continue to do so.
I have focused my efforts the past 3 years on replacing lower quality purchases that I made in the early years and buying quality replacements. I have made some really great deals on ebay and craigs list and some of those purchases have been for mere pennies on the dollar. I have been very fortunate to get those deals. However my focus is not and will never be on how big my collection is.
Frankly if I can't hit 90% of the time with 15,000+ songs then I never will.

My sentiments exactly. We all know, at least those of with years of experience, that if you took the top 250 songs to a show you'd be fine. No, seriously....there are probably 500 songs that get sung. It always irritates me to look at the music I have that has NEVER been sung. No point in having 100,000 songs or even 50,000 songs - seems like a major expense (if they are purchased legally) when they'll NEVER get sung.
I don't consider 100,000 songs a top selling point, though some gullible bar owners may buy it. Doesn't make a spit of difference if the system isn't good and if the host is inadequate for one reason or another (there are many ways a host can be inadequate...use your imagination).

I have 12,650 unduplicated songs, roughly. I never make a big deal of the size of the library, either.
There is a guy in my area telling people he has 50,000 songs. I checked out his book, (he only had one, which tells me that he can't afford to print more than one, PIRATE) he had friends in low places listed 10 times. His system absolutely sucks, but he was a pretty good MC.
In order to have 50,000 songs you would need 3,334, 15 song discs. At an average cost of $20 per disc, that's $66,666.67 just in music. I find it hard to believe anyone would invest that much on one system; unless you are duplicating your library and running several systems. If you can afford 50,000 legit songs, you could've bought 15,000 songs, an $10,000 Bose system, and put a down on a house with the rest.
There is no need for 50,000 songs. I have songs that have never been or will ever be used.

But what if you all ready have a house and a Bose system!??!
I think I'm actually around 24,000 without duplicates. I am in my 12th year.

I currently stand at the 6,000 mark (ish), and have only once had a request for a song I didn't have. It's about choosing the disks you buy, not just blanket downloading everything.

Exactly, spend your money on what your singers WANT rather than what you THINK will draw them in & you will be better off 10 fold! I used to buy all the new stuff just to have it sung for a couple weeks & then never be pulled again - WASTE of money. Once I started my request sheets for what they really wanted, I got those songs & many of those songs are still sung at least once a week. Never again will I be the 'first' on the block to have the 'newest' stuff. It's not needed.

Hold up - don't delete anything. Keep them on your system but not in your books. You never know - someone may come in, see a song then ask "Have you got the Sunfly version" or such...

i agree with Nlouch don't delete the extra ones i am like the rest of you i have the same song, by different manufactures, thoi just got one listing in the song book also this has been good at times because singers get use to singing the one there familiar with. say they been singing a sweet georgia brown version but you selected a soundchoice version, it will throw some of them off, they get that puzzled look on their face. if you can accommodate your patrons they always come back....if a person was to go thru their song book and get rid of all the stuff thats not sung it would probably be mesmerizing...i know when i had just 2000 songs i had just as many singers.. cal

On a slow night, I've seen maybe 6 to 9 singers, couple songs each, even 3, you do the math..
That's a lot less than 50,000 songs..

When I started out, I bought my music from a guy who was getting out of the business. It was the easiest and most cost effective way to get going. Like Lonman, I started picking up all the newest stuff in order to be the first person locally to have it. I quickly realized I'd thrown the cost effectiveness thing out the window by doing this, because it was pretty rare someone would actually even sing something off the new discs. I stopped ordering them and just started keeping a list of requests and picking them up every couple weeks or so.
Long story short, I've built up to around 15,000 songs, which I used to use in advertising (it may even still say it on my site), but I discovered no one cares how MANY songs you have. they care about WHAT you have. I get compliments on my book all the time, so clearly I've filled it right.

Then you are ahead of the game. I have a house, but not the Bose system. After 12 years 24,000 songs is a reasonable amount.

Sadly, in L.A. every KJ has 100,000 songs and another 60,000 bumper music MP3s..

It's not the size that matters.
