hows the tour coming Kappy?

Well, let me be totally honest about something here for a change. You've all heard that the VanHalen bros (Ed and Alex) can be brutal towards their singers ? DL Roth, and similarly Sammy Hagar had their feelings hurt.. Will I found out first hand, these two brothers are nasty $(%($'s to their singers.. They really hurt my feelings, so I picked up enough of myself after feeling slammed by the VH bros to hit that three day stint with Starship, but I suppose I couldn't hide the fact that emotionally I was lackluster, I guess it shows, Sad thing is, I doubt they'll give me a second chance :(... So I'm taking this week off so my higher register is rested for the Moody Blues fill in for Justin Hayward.. He's got the flu, and won't be ready to sing during next weeks bookings.

Been quite busy, thanks for asking.

It's unfriggin believable tho. Ed and Alex together are the sickest, crudest most abusive batch of siblings that ever assembled in one room :(

Sad news from the road:

So, For those of you wondering how my fill-in gigs with the group Boston are going, well.. With great shame I broach the subject

I was singing at a live concert in the Coliseum down in Atlanta and towards the end of the song "Amanda" (where I normally shoot into the counter-tenor register singing the lyrics, "You, You and I girl, We can spend the night together it's now or never, and tomorrow"; During belting "tomorrow" my larynx shot out through my left nostril and as if that's not bad enough, Tom Scholz's girlfriend was in the front row with her Yorkshire Terrier. Of ALL things, my larynx smacked the dog in the right side of her head, and the dog has a concussion.

I was fired as singer :(

S0, I've decided to stick to mellower stuff. In fact I'm auditioning for a new show that's soon to make it's debut on Broadway. It's called "Phantom of the Opera"

Problem I have with this song is breath control given it's slow tempo and phrasing. It needs to match the backing, and when it's done in the actual musical the orchestra gets loud so it's easier to apply dynamics, in this rendition the backing stays relatively softer than the Crawford rendition

It's been 7 months. I'm still struggling. I really hope in a few years something clicks, and I'll be able to do this.. I'm not trying to approach this the easiest way of course. I'm trying to tackle stuff WAY over my head.. Because it's some of the stuff I like, so rather than trying to learn songs in my range, I'm trying to conform my range to songs I like... If there's an A55-backwards way to figure something out, somehow that's the door I approach stuff thru (Pardon the inuendo)

Transitioning between chest, head, and falsetto are tough on this song. I've been trying that back of the throat yawn, and focusing on projecting points using mouth positioning in hopes of expanding range

Kappy you are just far too close to yourself lol you dont see and hear the improvements...listened to half of music of the night (have had that song up to here, my steve has decided he wants to start singing again and chose that one to warm up with grrrr) scarborough fair was bloody good mate compared to your early stuff...I really enjoyed...my one critique would be; instead of trying to blend in harmony with the backing harmonies, you were trying to drown them out...like it was a competition...a softer backing and softer vocal would have given enough head room for the mix to sound more harmonious...aside from that I thought you did great

Thank You Vicki. Music of the Night as a "WARM UP song" ? OK, there's something humorous there... It's a TOUGH song, not quite my idea of "warm up" material, but I don't know...

I suppose nature is kind in some ways. Either that, or our physiological makeup is "kind" to us. I was unable to hear myself when I totally sucked, and I'm still unable to hear myself as somebody learning who might only partially totally suck now :), I assumed that I have just gotten more used to hearing my weird voice, and since the human mind can get used to just about anything over time, I assumed I've grown accustomed to the agony...LOL

you may well have Kappy, but the agony on us has lessened...I am only objective because I listen infrequently. If I listened all the time the subtle changes would not be so apparant

Now I'm all teary-eyed ! That's the sweetest compliment I've gotten in ages :) I really never thought it was possible for me to get that good ! Perhaps if I keep up my momentum I'll soon attain the honesty 4 rank I've only dreamed of :banger:

This is for you Vicki, It's the Macy Grey song you've been anxiously awaiting !! But the lyrics of course are promised for Billy ONLY, she gets so jealous ! not you !!

The Macy Gray song was actually a Joke Billy. Don't get all teary-eyed from emotion :) I did try to make it work, but I couldn't... I like the song, but it'll never be in the cards for me even as a gender bender as intended... Oh, and not ALL the lyrics were for you... HEH... Anyway, trying to keep my humor up still even though my A/C is broken..

The Climax song I worked hard on, It's out've my range, but dang it... I'm trying to expand my upper range somewhat by doing that back of the throat wide yawn type opening stuff, YES, even warmups first, and I'm watching my breathing and posture. Really trying to get this to work, if I'm lucky in a few years I'll break free from my congested head-voice and actually develop singing strength, (something I never believed existed until the past few months). Fact is, I never knew the larynx is a muscle that can be developed, I thought singing was something god given or not doable...

Steven, I can't believe you're singing! What got you to start? I'm listening to Sound of Silence and I think you're doing a fine job. I'm not one for critiqueing---but I just wanted to say I'm happy to hear you sing! :D

Hi Luly, Well, I'm a VERY VERY new voice student, the term "Singing" and "Singer" hopefully will be a term I can use for the sounds I emit in the not too distant future but I have some FABULOUS coaches that are being VERY honest with me, and I'm humble and wish to hear how I can improve. Thank God people are being honest with me and telling me where there are problems, it's so very important at this stage because I really am incapable of hearing myself, and that means regardless of whether a song works given my voice or not. I HONESTLY can not hear myself.. It's weird.. Some sort've block, not sure.. Thank you.. Seriously, I have no ego regarding this... Friends have told me "You aren't ready for that", or "What the *$*# are you trying to do you sound like #($(#", and I am grateful to them for such honesty (believe it or not).. I REALLY want to learn to sing, and it'll take time !

Vicky, ROFLAO... Naked my @$$... I had to stop doing that... Too many love-crazed people were showing up at my door at all hours of the morning (I think there were even one or two females among that love-crazed group too) :(

I entered my first contest btw !! The host disappeared though and the contest was cancelled..I'm serious..LOL.. Oh well.. At least I didn't get a chance to win, not ready for a fat head yet. Heck, I might end up in SS complaining about my rank..HAHAHAHA.. The song was Helplessly Hoping...

Anyway thanks for all your help... and all that've been honest with me, it's the biggest favor you folks can do for me... Too bad SS doesn't allow 3-6's... It's important I get a 3-6 when my song is realistically a 3-6 because it will make the 7 some day feel great !!!!! I want to keep it real...

Thanks again all... Here's Crosby, Stills, Kappy and Kappy.. I am singing two parts here... Singing harmony with my sorry-@ss... (yet like usual the sounds from my sorry-@ss are the better vocals in the sing)

I was happy enough with Helplessly Hoping to even send a copy to Billy. Anyway, I'm singing at least two hours a day. If I applied myself this hard learning Golf, I might've learned it eventually... I'm REALLY applying myself and trying to learn to sing.. I'm trying harder than anything else I think I've ever tried given the duration and time-spent.. I don't have a "natural" voice for this, I think I have to work harder than most to do this because my natural voice sucks IMHO... Anyway.. Maybe this is common for many people until they develop "singing strength".. I'm noticing I'm getting a little stronger in the throat..hehe,, I can flex my adams apple and notice the bulbous oiled lump after workouts !! Too bad something else isn't quite so large... Anyway enough of my nonsensicle goofy posts.. I intended for this to be a serious thread and here I am violating my own thread description

I've never believed that music is something people are ever too old to learn, and having taught adults musical instruments I confirmed that. I realized it's time I stop typing so frequently about how I suck, and can not sing, and spend more time doing something positive such as LEARNING how to do what appears close to the impossible. As long as I am spend time learning to sing I can always type a little about how I suck and can't sing :) I always wanted to be able to sing, there was never a doubt... It's just that I believed what we are born with is the singing voice we are going to have for life, therefore I NEVER believed it was a possibility to learn.. I decided not to accept defeat in an area that I can at least try hard in (without throwing out my neck or back) and get on the horse and try to stay there... So rather than type 4000-5000 posts a year, It's time I learn to do what I really want to be able to do.... Typing about not being able to do it wasn't about to make it happen... So my time is now spent trying to learn. I joined this site initially due to my interest in singing and music, It's time for me to try to learn.
