I'm with you 100% Masterblaster. I will use a screen above the singer, particularly if that's the only one available!

But I would NEVER do a show without a screen for the audience. I'll make it happen whatever the expense. I've never had a venue that prohibited it. If they did, I wouldn't do a show there. Of course they are going to pop up with a few wrong lyrics, but they are pretty accurate 9 out of 10 times. Chartbuster seems to be pretty good as well. It's most definitely the cheaper brands like SGB, Backstage, All Hits, NuTech, etc...that are consistantly wrong. When possible I will run all the cabling & leave it (ran in the ceiling when possible) in the venue with a cable A/B switch on the tv, so when I would set up, I would just need to connect the cable end at the equipment & switch the a/b switch. Quote: I do dislike the "giant screen behind the singer", though. For some reason, it seems to make people focus only on the screen, not the singer. I prefer a big screen off to the side, or somewhere else in the bar. At one venue I did, there wasn't any big screen, so I hooked up three of the smaller TVs so people could see wherever they were in the bar.
Plus the singer tends to turn around to read the words rather than facing out in the audience.

I kinda Thought the incorrect words were an attempt to change the lyrics so they could skirt the charges for the full copyrights for the song.

Nah it's just they don't have actual lyrics & try to listen to what they heard & print out what they think it says. One or 2 words wrong wouldn't change anything regarding copyright or sync rights.

I've seen several Sound Choice tunes with absolutely crap lyrics. Whoever was in charge of deciphering them did a horrible job. One particularly hacked up job was what they did with Pearl Jam's "Daughter." Always gets a weird look from someone who's never done the song before.

You've opened up an "old" thread in which 1 dozen participants, most of whom are KJ's, posted their opinions. One poster......just one poster.... who is not a KJ disagreed with the twelve who are enthusiastic about having TV's for the audience to view.
Obviously, after all of the reasons I personally listed for having an audience screen, you're unimpressed.
So...what's your point/objective?
Do you think you're going to change our minds? And if so, to what benefit? Not trying to be a jerk, but this is a pretty aggressive response to what seems like a fairly innocuous post. She never said she was unimpressed with your reasons. In fact, you're never mentioned in the post, so to go on the offensive doesn't make sense. Just sayin'... My personal opinion is that having at least one screen facing the audience is a bonus, but not "essential" as some have mentioned. I run two shows, and at my most successful one, I don't have a monitor facing the audience, and have never had a single person complain or even mention it. Yeah, I agree they'd probably love it if I did, but first: there are no TVs close to my setup area, and second: I don't necessarily want to invest the money in a second monitor for just one show. The other show has a gigantic TV right next to where I set up, so I patch into that no problem.
Have a look at Kameragurl posting history, and you will see why.

I'll chime in now too.... As a KJ (once in a blue moon), I try to hook up to 1 TV in the Bar as well as my own. The TV that I bring forces the singer to face the audience, and the other screen is usually overhead and facing the Bar and Audience so that they can see the lyrics too. There have been one or 2 places where I've worked, and the Bar did not allow me to hook up to their set, so I just made do with what I brought.
Personally, I don't believe that the use of a 2nd screen (or multiple screems) will really make or break the Karaoke show (and people that have said if they don't see more than 1 screen set up for Karaoke are just acting spoiled if they think that's going to ruin their evening). I do agree that by having the extra screen in use, it does get some of the people more involved. I know that when I go out to a show, sometimes I like to sing along from my seat too. Sometimes, I just want to try and learn the song that's being sung, so seeing an extra screen helps (but, if there isn't a 2nd screen, I'll just listen that much more intently).

man, Mick, you sure can be an annoyin' IDtenT.
I am one of the kjs that love to see multiple screens going. All it takes is watching the audience.
Plus this allows the singer to move about the room and the freedom to glance at other monitors, and not stand there like a rock.

Having a monitor for audience participation is better than NOT having one
But it won't make your show a bad one if your don't .......

And your point being????? I don't understand your sarcasm here (at least that's what I'm picking up from you without hearing the tone in your voice). Are you telling me that you can't go out to a Karaoke show and have a good time just because YOU can't see what the Singer on stage is singing?????
Now read the rest of my original post.... I DID state (not in these words) that having the extra screens is a plus. I don't deny that having an extra monitor can help to enhance the show, but, IMO, it's not 50 percent of the show's importance (as RLC posted... sorry RLC, I'm not trying to single you out). When you go out to a concert, there are no video monitors for you to see the words that the performer/s is/are singing on stage, yet lots of times, the Audience sings along (and at times, they are even encouraged (by the performer) to sing along).
I have been to tons of shows where the KJ does not hook up into multiple screens, and everyone still enjoyed the show. SOME KJs also believe that the focus of the show should be on the Singer on stage, and by having the Audience seeing the lyrics and singing along, it drowns out the Singer (yes... I actually know a few KJs of this mindset). Is that ridiculous... maybe. Someone else posted something about a KJ who sets up with a Monitor that places the Singer's back to the Audience (with no other monitors in use).... I HATE that too!!! As a Singer, I like to face my Audience, and as an Audiennce member, I like to see the face of the person singing.... not their backside.
But I do agree, as DJ Swirl posted, not having multiple video monitors does not make it a bad show.

I can have a good time doing a lot of things. I don't try and tell other people they are spoiled for feeling a certain way, though. That doesn't sound like a good time to me.
As a singer, I like to have a screen I can see. I even try to sit where I can see it, because I like to see the song, the key, the artist, and the running time. Not to mention the lyrics. Does it ruin my evening? Can't recall much of *anything* ruining my evening for a long time. I am not that easily upset. I far prefer having the screen, though, particularly when it has a rotation list.
As a host, I always try within reason to have more than one. But I don't find it is always possible as I do a lot of one-offs in unknown facilities. Just tonight I did a show with only one monitor, since the person bringing the large television screwed up and forgot. (It is a state park and not a bar, so we don't have TVs all over the place.)
Someone did in fact feel the lack and mention they liked it better when they could see the list of singers coming up and the lyrics. I apologized and told them I would try to have it next time. I didn't suggest they were spoiled to their face, and I didn't feel that way. I felt I didn't put on quite as good a show. It is better when you can see the list of upcoming singers, and it is nice to be able to see the lyrics so you can sing along or anything else.
So what I don't like is the putdown of people for complaining about something. Of course if someone told you that it ruined their evening, it would say a lot about them that their evening was so easily ruined. But I don't think anyone was really suggesting that it could have that kind of power.
