I dislike when people pick up the microphone stand and sing. My singers have a stage, but it isn't big enough to be picking up a mic stand and be swinging it around.
I keep 2 mic stands on stage one that I use and just hand my mic to a singer if there is a duet and another one for the solo singer.
Since the weighted stand didn't seem to detour them I bought a tripod stand. Which is bulkier, so you'd think this would stop the insistant rockstar. For the most part it worked except for Sat. night.
I had a guy Sat. night that wacked me in the back of the leg when my back was turned. I gave him a warning and he still insisted on picking it up. Bye bye you're done singing. His complaint was where he usually sings the KJ allows him to pick it up. I told him he could sing again, but if he picked up the stand he would be done for the night, no exceptions. My stage is not big enough and things get broken like my legs.
Do any of you allow people to pick up mic stands when singing?

I will allow it most of the time unless they are just getting out of control. Our stage is big enough that alot of singers will pick up the stand in rock star wannabe fashion.

Please don't throw me out! I confess I hold on to the stand and tilt it pretty frequently. Now it never really leaves the ground, but it leans a whole bunch.....

Happy Birthday Lon !
Mcky I'm sure you would be fine if you were just leaning it. I'm talking about the guy that swings it around and remember this is a tripod stand. Those legs reach out a distance. Plus the fact the mic cable gets twisted around the legs. When this guy left the stage I had to stop a minute and untwist the cable from the legs because the next person, if they wanted to, would not be able to lift the mic from the stand because it was caught underneath. Aaarg!

I don't mind if people pick up the stand, so long as they're not an idiot.
Last night I had a guy doing Bohemian Rhapsody. He insisted on twisting the weighted bottom off so he could have a stand similar to Freddie Mercury's. He proceeded to stand on a chair during a high point in the song, then tried (yeah, I said tried) to leap off the chair in rockstar fashion. He caught his foot on one of the arms and belly-flopped the floor. With my mic stand and mic still in hand. Thankfully, nothing got busted or broken (except the chair) - the singer was okay, too - but this dunderhead made no apologies for his behavior. I later found out he's not only a musician in a relatively popular local band, but works for an audio company that sells and installs PA equipment. Despite the fact that he nailed the song and the crowd went nuts, any musician or audio tech worth a crap would've been extremely apologetic.
Needless to say, he won't be doing that at my show again.

I'm surprised you guys are using mic stands. Most KJs here just use the cheezy hooks under the TV stand. I have a prop guitar (air guitar?) and mic stands definitely make it easier to use the prop. If no stand is present, I don't use the prop. I respect the stand as someone elses property and act accordingly. No swinging or flaying about.

I stopped using mic stands about 3-4 years ago. I prefer to hand the wireless mic's to the singers as many folks (primarily drunk ones) can't seem to figure out how to put them back in the stand properly. Now if I were running wired mic's I would still use them cause they don't seem to have a problem with those for some reason.
I never had one person in 10 years misuse a stand but I would put an end to it immediately if it started.
I guess some folks need to fulfill the rock star fantasy... What's next pyrotechnics?

I would NEVER do this at someone else's gig, but hey at mine, the mic stand comes apart and I get all Freddie Mercury on it!

I'm not a fan of the chessy hooks. I use stands. Although, it is truely amazing how many people can't figure out how to take the mic out of the stand, nor put it back in right. I don't believe that I've ever had someone go nuts with the stand. I did however have a fellow dj even, get all rockstar and swing the mic by the cord and try to do the catch and sing routine. That definately got me tinkled! It's like, dude....wtf ru doing? You would think he (for sure) would know better. He was a little bit tanked, but that's no excuse....MrD

I don't have mic stands for the singers, and after reading Babs and DJ Swirl I don't think I ever will.
I think I've had maybe two people in the last two years mention to me that I should get them. Not a high priority with my group.

I like the stand, but I've always been afraid that if I picked it up some disaster would occur and I'd either hit something with it or it would fall into two pieces or something. I occasionally will tilt it a little but that's it. I try to be considerate vis-a-vis the equipment (and how often do you get to say "vis-a-vis"?).

We use stands, always have. I experimented with the different 'grips' that there are and found some that are VERY easy to singers to use. I've never had anyone abuse a stand. We have the ones with the very heavy bases - no fund to pick up.
I have had dudes make like they were going to swing the mic ... I always ask if they have a $100 bill in their pocket for a deposit to use the mic that way. Stops them immediately. (I have actually muted the music and told them not to do it.) Most of the people who sing with us are pretty respectful, thank goodness. Glad I'm not dealing with YAhoos every week like some of you apparently have to.

- I like that one !
I used to have a guy who would put the mic in the stand, put his foot on the weighted base holding on to the mic cable then push the mic stand foward and pull it back by the cable. He also was in a band and knew better.

Oh gawd...mic swingers! Hate those guys. They don't seem to understand that a mic, if it came loose from its connector, becomes a missile that could actually hurt someone. Quality mics have some heft to them. Rock band roadies usually have those taped up pretty good so they don't separate. At karaoke it would be a hassle and just one more thing to do, plus the small confines of most rooms make it a not good thing to do.

I say if you're willing... then let them have at it. If not... get them the heck off stage if they can't follow your rules.
They should come out with "idiot proof" mic stands, and mics, and speakers, and everything else that goes along with karaoke. Extra padded, shock resistant, waterproof, all that good stuff.

Ive made a mic missle before..but i only swing it where nobody is in its line of fire. im pretty confident that you can't wreck a SM58 (did anyone see that video posted on here?). I use monster cables so its warranty if i wreck the end. when the mic came uncliped i learned to check that when i pic up the mic. luckly i had a long instermental break and ran and got it, laughing all the way.
As for stands , I use a single iron based stand with n adaptor to put 2 mics on top that was designed for recording , but works great for karaoke. it was like $5 from musicians friend. with this setup nobody tries to become a rockstar with it. however last night my partner decided to play air guitar with it. it was funny as he has no clue how to play guitar.

Of course it is a talent. Here is the winner of 2006 US Air Guitar championships. Yes there is a yearly national AND worldwide competition for this!
