A while back, a coupe of months ago at least, I asked for suggestions for Blues songs because I wanted to sing at a blues open mic night. You guys gave me some good suggestions back then. Well, the same place now has a Jazz open mic night too on another night and I went there. Man O Man, there is a bunch of terrific musicians there. I asked to sing Summertime and a gal who was there had already beat me to it. I thought of This Masquerade and I may do that next time I go, but I'd like to have at least a half a dozen songs practiced up and with lyric sheets next time I go. So, help a brotha out. What are some good Jazz tunes that I should sing? Thanks

lemme see...love for sale, god bless the child, cry me a river, you dont know what love is, (they are more torch than pure jazz)
Take the A train, Girl from Ipanema, Fool on the hill (sergio mendes arrangement)
anything by Jaime Cullum eg these are the days, twentysomething, all at see, singing in the rain, but for now, what a difference a day made, etc
Sinatra; witchcraft, moonlight in vermont, I got you under my skin, all of me, you do something to me, you make me feel so young, 3 coins in a fountain,...the list goes on and on

Don't do:

1. Summertime
2. Mack The Knife
3. New York New York

I mean I would think you probably want to stay away from the ones that have been worn out already. My room doesn't do this kind of stuff at all but when I've been out to other shows these are the jazz-type songs that keep coming up. And they go over just like "Before He Cheats" does in mine. Everyone takes the song off to do other things.

I always kind of liked Bobby Darin's uptempo version of "Beyond The Sea" but what do I know. It may be oversung too in rooms that specialize in jazz.

Look at the first three disks of the SGB series. They are denoted as "Jazz" and most tracks are excellent!

I was going to suggest the SGB's jazz series - they are excellent, probably the only good or nearly good things that SGB did. Quality appears to be excellent.

The Look of Love, Sergio Mendes
This Guy's In Love, Herb Alpert (more pop than jazz but would probably work)
Up a Lazy River
Blue Skies, Willie Nelson
Sunny Side of the Street
After You've Gone
Love Is Here to Stay
L-O-V-E, Nat King Cole
Where or When, Sinatra
Satin Doll
Maria Elena (Pocket Songs)
Elmers Tune (Pocket Songs)
Sentimental Journey

The reality is: many songs have been done in a jazz style, but you need to know that a particular karaoke track was so done. For the most part, just listing songs is pretty useless. Aside from the SGB specific jazz tracks, your best bet, IMHO, is to check out Pocket Songs tracks of the old standards and you may find some to your liking!

I do agree that certain songs, like "A Train" and some of the songs associated with a particular artist will be what you expect, but many of the songs listed are also available in non-jazz versions

The only SGB jazz track any singer I've had up had issues with is "Fly Me To The Moon" because they all have wanted an uptempo version of it and that one is a slow ballad. Other than that I agree they are good quality and they have been very helpful if all you need is a few. And that's all I need presently.

The big one missing is "Fever".
