"Redneck Woman" and "I Love This Bar"... yup. They both still get sung steadily in my room too and my guess is that they will still be around in 20 years.
I can't tell about the recent stuff because it doesn't have legs yet, but of all the rap/hiphop songs that aren't new, "Dontcha" and "My Humps" are the only ones in my place that still get done by a variety of singers. So maybe. When I first made my list, I was trying to imagine the current crop of singers singing the stuff when they hit their 40s and 50s. I don't know if they will do hiphop when they hit midlife but hey... when people start drinkin... you know what I'm sayin'...
Plus...some recent rap and hiphop is bound to make it as karaoke standards if "Baby Got Back" is any indication.
Edit: Trying to imagine what the millennials will be singing in 20 years is the reason I left off the explicit language material. When they have kids I'm not sure that they will own up to listening to and singing things like "She Hates Me" and Tenacious D when they were younger.

There are alot of 90's songs listed in these lists & even 1 80's song. But do notice that what you both (so far) feel will last - mostly the newer country over the newer rock/pop! I get Whiskey Lullaby done quite a bit here also Suds In The Bucket. Do you have these songs Babs or do they just not get done? Put Your Lights On (Everlast with Santana) used to get done quite a bit but was one of those "flavor of the month" songs for us & died. It had a brief ressurection about a year ago, but the person that used to do it quit coming in.
I actually had to check my song book to see if I had both songs.
I have them.
I think a lot of the newer pop music is hard to sing. They put so many effects and layering on the singers voices. Country on the other hand has stayed more traditional. I'm thinking that is why plain old rock and country have more of a chance of being classic karaoke songs.

Redneck Woman I can see lasting, I Love This Bar is a rare one around here - maybe once a month.

I see very little rap of any kind lasting through the test of time. Songs like Baby Got Back, Funky Cold Medina, Bust A Move, Ice Ice Baby, Rappers Delight, Humpty Dance (all from the 80's/90's era) will stay around because they weren't your typical rap of todays type. They were still fun songs & were some of the original rap - however some rap 'purists' would argue that these were just sell out artists out to make a quick buck.

They were not writing a song every week in response to producers with only one thing in mind.. greed and money.
I totally agree with you Ollie. Loretta Lynn, Kitty Wells, Tammy Wynette, T Tucker... Hank, Merle, Jones, Waylon, Cash..... they really *were* good singers and sounded the same live as they did in studio. I don't think I'll ever quit singing those people's songs myself, just because yeah, they are true artists in my opinion and I admire their music.
Funny, me and someone else were just talking about this subject. I don't mean to trash a new singer, and there are quite a few I could name that I think are awesome- and there because they DO have lots of talent (Miranda Lambert for one, I love seeing her perform, she's gonna be around for years to come)
But what is UP with Taylor Swift? I think that girl is one who was sold on image only. She's a good songwriter, but my gosh... I've seen her perform on TV about 4 different times on various shows, and she is horrid live. Perhaps her voice will mature over time and she'll get better control of it, but for now..... I would not pay $2 to see her perform live. (though her cd's do sound great)

I picked up "Gunpowder And Lead" just as a $2 download after noticing that you liked singing it. I don't know if it's going to stick around, but boy is it getting sung a lot right now! I don't think I've thanked you yet for the tip so thanks MandiLynn!

And just to prove I'm not hijacking the thread (lol) I agree with:
Rockstar (just a cool song)
Redneck Woman (ugh, overkill)
Picture (in a category all by itself as far as overkill)
Whiskey Lullabye
I love seeing all the diverse tastes from various parts of the country, definitely makes this an interesting thread.

That's my current favorite song to do. Most of ML's songs really appeal to me, they're not your every day diva female songs.
Funny though, I've only ever heard one other person try this song besides me. I *am* in a small town, and neither of the KJ's here own that song yet, but I know a couple other girls who carry cdg's who have it... so maybe later I'll hear it more often from other people. Until then, it's mine. Lmao I'll wear it out while I have the chance. Come to think of it, the KJ's do have some of her other songs (Kerosene, Crazy Ex G/F, etc)... and I don't hear those either. (besides from me)
Kewl tho... it's always a pain when you really want to sing a song on a given night and 4 other girls are waiting to sing it too.. then it ends up being whoever puts it in line first. (or- whoever knows the KJ best)

I was afraid of getting bashed for that opinion, but I'll stand by it. She should have been a songwriter/maybe guitarist for a hit singer- not the singer herself. But, again, maybe with time she'll improve. (I can't understand tho- we all can produce bad notes, lord knows I do often enough, but does she not HEAR it? She'll sustain a totally off-key note and not even notice, then turn around and do it again the next time ... ugh)

Kryptonite was released 2000.
Crazy B is pretty gone around this area. Don't hear much about it anymore. Haven't had a request for it in a few months.

Glad to find that someone else is picking up on this pitch issue. I saw her on an awards show, I believe, and she was NOT the only one who was pitchy as all get out. I didn't notice, was she wearing an in-ear? I would expect on a stage that size the acoustics will be difficult at best for a singer...and she didn't appear to have floor monitors once she started moving around...but it was atrocious.
I noticed a lot of other singers were pitchy - and in the past I have noted Sara Evans to really have pitch issues. I had a discussion with a few Nashville session musicians who thought it was hilarious that almost every artist now is run through an auto tuner during recording sessions, but many of them now are auto tuned LIVE. I can see why. Production can make almost anyone sound good. I should think on a review of an awards program, where they themselves are receiving awards, and they hear how terribly off key they were, that they'd want to give the award back. Of course TS fits the mold - young and cute - that's almost all you need now. Any one notice how Rhonda Vincent has been made over to fit the more 'video friendly' look?
(oh oh, hijack occurring)

The only thing I know about Taylor Swift is that "Teardrops On My Guitar" had a hot but very short life as a karaoke song. It was sung quite a lot last fall but it's been weeks since I've heard it. And nothing else by her has ever been sung more than once or twice where I KJ.
But nothing compares to the steep rise and fall of "Crazy B". Somehow around 6 months ago that one went from always sung once or twice a night to never sung at all... in just a few weeks. Haven't had it come up since sometime last winter.

Substance vs. style. Why is it that just about any age group can like a collection of songs like Willie Nelson's Greatest Hits? My late Aunt liked Willie's singing. I like his songs.
I liked alot of country music that came out during the 80's and early 90's. Some of the lyrics were very clever. Some were good poety also. Songs like Randy Travis' Honky Tonk Moon...
Quote: Dirt road in the twilght, woods so cool and dark. Up a-head pale neon, somewhere a dog barks, Honky-tonk moon, keeps shining on my baby and me
Breaking up the pool balls, chalk-ing up the cues Juke box pumping softly, lazy summer blues Honky-tonk moon, keeps shining on my baby and me
Very nice lyrics--you can visualize the whole thing, and the melody evokes a relaxing image. I love the harmonica in this song. Heck, you can almost hear the creaky screen door...
I don't see that level of craftsmanship and artistry going into songs right now. And it would be hard for someone to write this kind of song unless they had lived a country style life I think.
Redneck Woman has clever lyrics. It's a well-written song.

Popular in the UK on Karaoke are "Rockstar" By Nickelback.... And "Mercy" by Duffy..(don't know if you got Duffy in the US yet)......also Amy Winehouse/Mark Ronson's version of the Zuton's "Valerie"...all songs I think will still be sung in years to come....

Yup, Duffy has arrived in the form of Mercy, which I sang last night. Love it. I also do most of A. Winehouse's stuff - it is difficult to say the least. She makes it sound easy but it isn't, with the exception, maybe, of "You Know I'm No Good."
