Well, I also have this phobia/fear of losing my ability to type and interact with my online friends.... and my life would fall apart if that happened... so my fear makes me blurt all my personal info all over the net to random people.

:D

Okay, so that was made up;) I just tend to share too much at times. But you're right, such things should be kept locked in a closet.

Charmin <------ Not afraid of anything;)

Hey Char, I am the same way really, my life is like an open book to most people I know. Don't change your position on anything, cause I'm sure most everyone here loves you the way you are. Besides this is my thread, in the lounge, so I appreciate your input exactly the way you wrote it,ok. Ron

does it make me weak to admit to a perceived weakness? I guess the answer will vary from person to person...personally I think not

its like the perception of cool I guess. Someone here once made fun of my car...but to me the definition of cool is not having all the latest and coolest of everything...its to be able to drive an uncool car, or to wear an uncool clothes and still be perceived as cool.

to me cool is nothing more than having the confidence to be you instead of bending over backwards to try and fit in

I would far rather have idiocyncratic friends who were true to themselves than hang with the "cool" crowd

Very well said Vicki, could'nt agree more. I drive a 20+ year old VW diesel, and its not because I don't have the money for something nice. Its just not important to me to have a flashy car to beat around in. A coworker said to me once, "you must be confident in your masculinity to be driving around in that thing" ,I just looked at him for a moment and then laughed, cause I never really thought about it.

You are the coolest Vicki, you have nothing to worry about!

I started out with no fear of flying at all. But I spent about 10 years traveling constantly. I did literally thousands of takeoffs and landings, and I think I started feeling that my number was going to come up just based on percentages.

So I started getting a bit nervous. One flight a stew noticed me gripping the armrest, and said "Oh, you don't like landings?" I confessed, and she said "Don't worry about the landings, the takeoffs are ever so much more dangerous." Then I started gripping the armrest for both....

But after a while, I guess I just figured that if my number was going to come up, it would come up. Intellectually I know I am much more likely to die in a car crash than a plane crash, even with all the flying I have done. But I can certainly understand where the fear-of-flying people are coming from.

I called my son today to find out how he did with his return flight on the airplane yesterday. He said, he was doing very well with no beer or shots on the return flight, maybe even enjoying that new found sense of power. Then suddenly, the plane started hitting some pretty intense turbulence, and the plane started bucking and doing what planes do in that situation. He had lost anything that he gained, and until he landed his hands were embedded into the handrests of his seats. I was hysterical by the time he finished his story, (laughing WITH him, of course). Sometimes overcoming has setbacks I guess, the good news is that he will do it again.

One thing I've noticed since we are here in Texas, a lot of people have snake phobias. Kind of weird. Rudy.

I know a lot of weird people then, and you can put me near the top of that list.I have never lost sleep, or broke out in a cold sweat over a snake, so it would'nt be a phobia I don't think...but I'm not Fonda snakes! Actually, most people I know are the same way, except people like my brother who picks them up and chases me with them.Yes he did, and if I had a gun, I probably would have shot my own brother as I was trying to outrun him, and the snake.
Anyway, when Charmin and I go trekin thru the appalacian hills, I will have my snake boots on at all times, as I follow several steps directly behind her!

Yeah Ron I would say you don't have a phobia about snakes just a normal fear. I mean if you walk up on a snake most people jump back ( as I do ) because they aren't sure if it is poisonous or not. I though, once I know it is non-poisonous want to catch it and look at it, figure out exactly what it is. Some people though are terrrified and can't even look at a snake on TV. I know several people here at work like that.

I grew up in the country and have always been fascinated with reptiles and other assorted critters. I used to see horned toads all the time when I was a kid and now that the fire ants have for the most part eliminated their food supply ( big red ants ) they are very scarce. That was a neat looking critter. ( horned toad )

I just think it's strange that a majority of these people I know with snake phobias are hunters that have no problem with hunting hogs and putting themselves in really dangerous situations and yet a 6" grass snake will terrify them. Of course most of these hunters could probably give a presentation in front of 20 people with no problem either where as I would be terrified! Rudy.

public speaking is I believe the no 1 biggest fear Rudy and used to be a prob for me too. People used to laugh at me and say stuff like "but you're a radio dj how can you be afraid to speak in front of people" thing is, if commercial radio is done correctly it is a private medium...you should visualise talking to your best friend, not giving a public address.
I did however overcome that one quite a few years back :)

a snarling dog... ((shudders))

I go ballistic. My reaction to fear is I go completely ballistic.

In the dog example, I was ten years old, and walking around the block, and I got attacked by a pack of dogs that were wild (I guess... only one was reported to be fron the neighborhood... the others nobody had ever seen them before). One minute I'm walking around the corner and I see this pack of dogs led by this german shepard.. I guess they sensed the fear on me and suddenly, they're all over me. I fell on my back in a fetal position and initially they were only sniffing all over me. But that shepard latched on my right leg below my kneecap in the meat of my calf, and sank his choppers in pretty deep. I began to scream, and they attacked me viciously. And then I got angry... very angry. All the time I was screaming, I was kicking out with my other legs, hitting exposed dog bellies and legs. They were yelping about as much as me!

I got saved by a little old lady that came out weilding a broom like a jedi knight. She helped me get to my house all the while holding onto my savaged leg. I credit her for saving my life, even though no artery was torn.

To this day, if a dog rushes me barking, I'll go nuts. I'll turn on him or her with a vengeance that scares me. I killed one dog without thinking when he jumped on me. Another I kicked so hard I broke it's ribs... all the while screaming and yelling at him like a madman.

Sad to say, I'm the same way when confronted by a gang. Common sense keeps me from staying around, but with training, I've learned the "divide and conquor" to just savagely attack the weakest one... plow through them, hurt the one that's in your way, and then try to keep on going. This tactic has saved me once. A second time, I actually had to fend off against three others that continued to pursue me. Since I'm not a tiny athlete, I had no recourse other than to fight them. Fortunately, all they had were knives, and they didn't know how to use them very well. After breaking one guy's leg at the knee and shoving another guy's head into a glass door (Downtown Kansas City), they lost the taste for picking on what they assumed was a helpless chubby guy and took off.

There's NOTHING silly or dismissive about phobias.

At about 4 years old I was overwhelmed by an incoming wave on the beach and like to drownded. Although I learned to swim I was never comfortable in the water. At about 18 I was running a hay sweep that caught fire and I burned all my back 3rd degree. For a few weeks if somebody lit a cigarette lighter I came unglued.

A few years later in the Navy we were going thru training excercises. They poured fuel oil on a swimming pool and set it on fire. We had to dive in swim under water and a couple of times hit the surface wave arms and get a breath of air. It took every ounce of guts I had. Would I do it again? Nope....Did I really get rid of both phobias? Nope... But I learned how to control them..

Matt, my reaction is fight or flight too...I dont become a quivering mess I beat the living tripe out of dentists and nurses and docs etc...

Ollie you are quite right you never get rid of the phobia you simply learn how to acknowledge the fear and do it anyway, or at least that is what I am in the process of learning. And there are different degrees...for instance 3 months ago when the shrink asked if I would hold a syringe with a needle stuck in her arm I said I couldnt do it...so I did it...but I couldnt do breaking the skin and putting the needle under my own skin...but then I did that...now I am up to being able to have a blood test but I couldnt follow it up with a 2nd one the next day...but then I was faced with that last weekend...
Now I cant imagine an IM cos I have only had IV and I definately couldnt handle a lumbar puncture

and so it goes on...if my shrink had her way she would be facing me with these negatives at every visit...but no thanks Liz I dont want a freakin flu injection simply to prove that my fear of intra muscular is unfounded

She has said that unless I place myself in the way of my fear regularly then I will revert back...well I think the dental thing will keep me facing it for a while yet...20+ years since I had any dental work, you can imagine the state my mouth is in...I feel the fear every time I walk thru that door but my dentist came recommended as empathetic toward phobias, and he is...hes a god!!! I trust him implicitly and every visit (4 so far and counting) sees me gain more confidence

Its kinda like the lonman story, in that when things happen at such a young age, they can have an everlasting impact throughout ones life. And I have the same kind of scenario, except the story is different, which I will share later tonight if I get the chance. Mine is not really interesting, but since I somehow started this thread, I should step up to the plate and share my weakness, (I mean phobia) too.

That really sucked because you had to deal with both at the same time(the waves and the fire) ,but you did it!

I thought it a little ironic that 3 people here (Rudy and Hamsamich, plus yourself), that are entertainers, or sing Karaoke had issues with the public speaking thing also. That IS my phobia, and maybe mine is a little deeper than most because of that childhood thing coming into play again.
When I was starting elementary school, I realized that I had a severe speech impediment. I was sent to speech therapy for several years, but it didn't help. Just couldn't overcome it, and the speech therapist would even get frustrated after a while. I have long since overcame it with time, so its completely gone, but the public speaking thing has roots with me. I would be terrified back then to give a book report, or stand up and speak in class because of it. I think times were tougher back then, as the teachers could make fun too without consequence. I was best man at a wedding last year, and had to do the toast, that was fun. Anyway, mine is going to be a work in progress, and I will overcome. I am getting so I can sing in front of a few people, but hope to expand on that, just wished I would have started sooner.
Ok, Charmin, We all spilled our guts here, so your'e not alone! Ron

I'm pretty idiosyncratic, but I'm pretty cool too. At least that's what the wifey says. We should have buttons that say "I'm a friend of Morgan LeFey" Wow, that would be awesome in a sig.

You are not comfortable in water, yet you joined the Navy? Hmmmmm! But anyway, I have this fear of being in a fire. I was once in a fire that destroyed my home and workplace ( I lived on the premises) , plus two people died in it. If I smell smoke, I panic.
