I went to the Oregon Coast this last weekend for some R&R and a little karaoke. I went to the #1 karaoke destination when you go to Lincoln City and got there before karaoke and had a nice chat with the kj before the rotation started. I sang my first song and all went well as usual. Then after returning from taking up my second song slip I sat down and went to adjust my chair......That's when the evening took a dramatic change for the worse! I tried to adjust my chair by lifting it up slightly and shifting it to the right and I felt an excruciating pain in my right hand and it was so bad I literally screamed at the top of my lungs...when I looked at my hand it was covered in blood and looked as bad as it felt.

It was really dark in the bar so I headed for the stage lights to see what had happened and when I got there I was not prepared for what I found. The top of the middle finger on my right hand was cut off  I mean gone! I went back to the table and saw what had happened....the seat of the chair was not attached to the chair frame and when I adjusted my seat it separated from the chair and my finger got caught in between and when I sat down it was pinched on the metal frame which must have been razor sharp. My wife panicked when she got a look and she began looking for the top 1/2" of my finger before departing for the hospital. We found it and put it on ice and was off to the emergency room.

I'm a full grown man and can handle pain but I was not ready for that kind of Pain!!!
Holy Crap! They gave my some good drugs to handle things for the next couple of weeks or so.

I'm ok now but they could not save the other part of my finger. Guess my golf game is done for the year...LMAO

The only reason I posted this is that it might prompt some KJ's to discuss this with their venues and also prompt the owners to do a safety inspection of their chairs and tables to avoid injuries and the obvious liability issues that come along with these sort of injuries. What happened here could have been avoided altogether as the chair seat was not even attached to the chair NO FASTENERS whatsoever! I betcha' this chair repair was totally ignored by several employees over the course of the past 6months or better. All the screws were gone not just a couple.

This would be the last thing I would have ever expected to happen to me while singing karaoke....LOL

Wow, Flipper, sorry to hear that.

I'm no ambulance chaser, but I hope you plan to take the venue to task for this. It was because of them that this happened to you, and there's no reason in the world they shouldn't AT LEAST be responsible for your medical expenses and any time you may have to take off from work.

Wow man, a 100% unexpected injury, and 100% due to the venue's seating/tables.

Are you going to chase this?

ohhh I forgot you can sue for anything over there...here we have a govt run corporation called accident compensation corporation...your employer (or you if self employed) pays a levy annually on your behalf and this takes care of all your medical expenses in the case of an accident.

Sadly our medical proffession is not held accountable which is such a shame

holy god! hope you get to feeling better. I've had several lacerations on my fingers (one twice on the same spot... a part sliced off with a Hobart slicer... on top of one that had almost been severed... the pain was intense the 2nd time, not so bad the first... it was a clean cut both times. )... I think the rough cuts hurt the most!

that brings up a good point... you were injured at the bar. Permamently disfigured if you want to stress it. My coworker asked if you were going to sue, Scott?

I used to take the stance that suing was needless and money grabbing. Then I grew up. The reason you have to push this is twofold:

1) Obviously to cover any expenses you incurr.

2) It SHOULD make the owner wise-up, and fix anything. Otherwise, this can happen again (and again).

Scott I think know of the venue you speak (beginning with the letter "M") and I can't believe this happened there. This is a freak accident for sure, but also one that could have easily been prevented with even a cursory inspection of the tables and chairs.

I am very sorry for your loss. As a musician, if something like that happened to me it would drastically change my life for the worse. My best wishes go out to you for a speedy recovery. Don't stay on the Vicodin too long (you don't want to be battling a narcotics addiction on top of your injury).

My home room always has several barstools in disrepair. I'm going to bring your injury up to the ladies in charge.

Oh My! Ouch! I'm a grown man, too, but readily admit to an extraordinary low tolerance for pain. I don't envy you. Don't drink with the drugs and here's my wish for a speedy recovery!

Thanks everyone for your replies. Let's just say I'm saving all my receipts and such and will be asking for some compensation. As to the extent I have not decided on that yet as it all depends on their posture and sincerity when it comes to doing a complete safety check of their premises.

Again, the only reason for posting this is to activate some of you to discuss this with the place where you gig to try to avoid this type of thing happening there. How many times have you seen a defective chair or bar stool that gets used because the place is packed or whatever. One interesting thing was that when I went to the medical center for follow up on the injury yesterday the seat I was sitting on in the treatment area was in the same exact shape, and when I brought it to the attention of the staff they looked at me like I was from Mars or something. So finally I found someone who was in charge and told them and they immediately removed the chair from use and replaced it. The experience was interesting as it took my intervention with several others to get the damn thing out of there! Some or most employees do not take public safety nearly as seriously as they should.

Yeah Bill I'm watching the amount of Percodane (not sure of spelling) I use. My blood is like spring water so it does not take much to do the trick. The moment I can do without the pain medication I'll be off of it.

Sorry to hear about this, Flipper. I worked in a place for years that had old oak tables and chairs, and regularly one of the chairs would give out and someone would end up on the floor. They always chalked it up to drunkenness, but frankly speaking every one of those chairs should have been replaced. Sorry you had such a horrible experience. And yes, you should definitely file a claim for them to cover all expenses resulting from this injury.

Damn, my finger hurts just from reading that. I hope for your quick recovery.

My friend did something similar, not from karaoke. He's a serious carpenter, not a pro but very in to it. We were making a cabinet for me and his daughter distracted him on the table saw and ripped 3 of his fingers. Blood everywhere and he had to go to the emergency and get sewn up.

He's been doing carpentry for 30 years and never had an accident and it just happened. His daugher is off limits to garage when he's woodworking from now on. Ouch.

Oh My!!! Who would have thought R&R meant remove and repair. Hope it doesn't affect your job much. I would see an attorney.

Of all fingers to break off.....

Flipper, I'm in pain just reading this too. Was the hospital able to reattach your finger? If so, did they say whether you'll have movement in it ever again?

Unfortunately Flipper, venue security and safety is the venue's responsibility and not mine. I would absolutely stay out of it. Of course, if it's that bad, I wouldn't play there. If as a host and a contractor, you get involved in any of these issues, you have just put yourself in the firing line of any lawsuits. As a host you are responsible for the safety of your own work area and equipment.

Sorry on the loss of your finger and the pain. Any lawsuit you initiate (if things were as described), I would be completely behind. Remember, their insurance company, should you win, will be paying for the damages, not the bar. This incident is not personal, it's unfortunately life happening. I'm not much for lawsuits but this is a case where it appears to be warranted.
