I love to sing. While it may, indeed, be self-indulgent, I sing at the top of every round until I reach 15 singers. I have a "disclaimer" of sorts in my list of rules in the front of my books. I've never had a complaint - never been fired from a gig and have SRO even on a Monday night at all but one of my gigs (why I can't get that one built is a topic for another thread). I wasn't that surprised by the woman's comment to the poster regarding one becoming a KJ in order to sing more. Of course, it takes no time to reach 15 singers at a successful gig, so I actually end up singing less than I would if I attended someone else's show, but I confess that way back when, I got into the business because I love to sing and I don't see what the problem is with singing at your own show as long as you stop at a reasonable point.

Here are the few simple "rules" in the front of my books:

1. Please do not join a singer in his or her performance unless you’re invited.

2. Applaud! Show that you appreciate the singer’s courage even if you didn’t really appreciate the performance.

3. One need only watch the American Idol auditions to know that not all people who think they can sing can, in fact, sing. Karaoke is about having fun, not a professional talent competition. If you must make fun of someone, do so out their earshot. Everyone should be able to walk away from the microphone feeling good about him- or herself.

4. Singers appear in the order in which their song request is received by the KJ. We do not take anyone out of turn for any reason. If you have to leave early - sorry. If you’ve bought the KJ beer all night - REALLY sorry. No exceptions.

5. Our KJs love to sing. They will do so in turn in the rotation until there are 15 or more people in a round, at which point they will stop singing and simply host to afford more time for you to sing!

6. Please be careful around the equipment with cigarettes and cocktails! Please do not swing microphones by their cords!

Mike that sounds reasonable to me.

I think it's just a matter of common sense. If your crowd is annoyed by the fact your taking up singing time by singing you don't do it.

How can I tell - If people are complaining they'd like to be pushed up in rotation or are constantly asking when they are up etc... Obviously there is a long wait and it will probably irritate them to see you sing instead of them.

I sing the first tune, then usually once more throughout the night unless it's slow, in which case I may add in another tune. There are occasions when I get asked to do duets, and I honor those as well, unless it starts getting to be too much, and then I may turn them down.

If I've got a decent rotation going, I won't hit the mic again after that first tune.

I kind of thought that singing at my own show would be like stilling their thunder! However we had a super night! It was fun. However when I am having a slow night I just play music and be the DJ instead of the KJ. I never thought of sing my at my own show! After last week mabe I will more often. Like when I am asked!!!! Are we counting when a singer asks you to sing with them? Usually it is just harmony during the chorus, but this happens several times a night for me. It's usually songs that over time have become routine for the singer and I to sing together. Like: Proud Mary, Joy to the World, Drift Away, Can't You See, Mocking Bird
People just say to me lets sing our song.

On my own I usually sing the first song then maybe one during the night.

Yes, I always put myself in the rotation...



...But then again, I'm not a kj. If I were, I don't know if I'd put myself in or not.

I always sing the first song, just to break the ice. Fortunately I have only experienced one unusually quiet night for singers, in which case I have CDs which I have pre-mixed for continuous play.
I'll always offer to dep in if someone needs a partner for a duet e.t.c. Otherwise I leave it all to the punters, they entertain me as much as I entertain them.
