Cue - The finger top could not be salvaged and I was told that after healing the tip would be numb but the nerves would continue to be painful for up to 1 year or more.
Tim - I was a customer at an out of town venue. This was not a place where I gig.
Thanks again to all of you for your words of support and encouragement. I'm going to wait for a while before I act on contacting the venue and will see if they will contact me. So far it has been 4 days and so far no communication from them.

Kind of an odd thing to say, but this could be the best time to ever lose part of a finger. They've done wonderful things with growing back limbs (fingers especially) with stem cells. You could well have the end of your finger back before you know it! Oh, I'd contact an attorney and have the attorney contact their insurance carrier. Don't wait too long, either. Best of luck with a quick recovery.

WOW!! OUCH!!! Hey are u still able to do your gig at Kays??? Or do u have someone covering for u or are u just going to cancel for awhile??? Go ahead and get your med bills taken care of by that bar's insurance.

I too like many here hate frivolous lawsuits, this wouldn't be one. Hopefully it won't come down to a lawsuit and they will fully reimburse you without litigation.
A couple of weeks ago I threw away a wooden chair at my friend/neighbors bar that the back had only a couple of spokes that weren't broken. I did that thinking that I saved someone the humiliation of falling on their arse, your incident reminds me that freak accidents can and do happen and that people can get seriously hurt in the blink of an eye.
Keep in mind ( hate to say this to you ) that finger injuries take quite awhile to heal so be patient and hopefully you can be back to normal soon. Godspeed on your recovery, Rudy.

on my thumb accident, it was just the tip of it... and Flipper, the docs are absolutely right. Numbness combined with severe nerve irritation. The worst is if it gets way too cold, like frostbite. That sucker hurts so much I want to sever the whole thumb off! I mean, I dash inside to imerse the sucker in cool or warm running water!

I wouldn't wait on contacting the bar. I'd call post haste and set the ball rolling.
Like everyone else, frivolous lawsuits stick in my craw, but you may want to go ahead and speak to a lawyer. I've always thought "pain and suffering" settlements a load of horse pucky, but I can't imagine having pain for a year or more without thinking about where that pain came from and getting aggravated every time. Get a lawyer. Do it now. No matter what happens, you're entitled to getting your medical expense covered at the VERY least. I'd say a little something for "pain and suffering" wouldn't be out of order either.

Finger injuries are painful as hell.
Flipper in this area if someone is injured in a bar they have 3 minutes to call 911 or they can be sued and the ones who issue their liquor license will consider closing them for a period. If it is their fault they are responsible for monetary damages. In your case did they call 911? If not that is more of a case of negligence. Did they assist? Did they have a first aid kit? That is another requirement here.
If they didnt call 911, have a first aid kit or assist you and dont contact you, your first contact with them would be via a lawyers letter of intent to sue.

Thanks Ollie but the 911 call is not a requirement in this area. I did notify the bartender of the accident and showed him the chair so it could be removed from the area, then I went back afterwards to fill out paperwork and take photos of the chair etc. Not to worry everything is taken care of now, I contacted an attorney and they will be contacting the venue from now on. From this point I'm out of the deal. I relayed to the attorney what my needs were and he will handle it from this point on. I Hate these sort of things anyway... 
Right now the pain is much worse than it was the first couple of days and I'm pretty out of it due to the medications, all I want to do is sleep so I'm not much for phone conversations anyway...

My wife panicked when she got a look and she began looking for the top 1/2" of my finger before departing for the hospital. We found it and put it on ice and was off to the emergency room. I'm a full grown man and can handle pain but I was not ready for that kind of Pain!!! Holy Crap! They gave my some good drugs to handle things for the next couple of weeks or so. I'm ok now but they could not save the other part of my finger. Guess my golf game is done for the year...  The only reason I posted this is that it might prompt some KJ's to discuss this with their venues and also prompt the owners to do a safety inspection of their chairs and tables to avoid injuries and the obvious liability issues that come along with these sort of injuries. What happened here could have been avoided altogether as the chair seat was not even attached to the chair NO FASTENERS whatsoever! I betcha' this chair repair was totally ignored by several employees over the course of the past 6months or better. All the screws were gone not just a couple. This would be the last thing I would have ever expected to happen to me while singing karaoke.... How weird is that.. however, I took my wife to her therapy after hand surgery, and the chair in the waiting room took a bite out of my hand..
It seems there were some nails sticking up in the seat cushion..

Scott, how awful!!
And yeah, you did the right thing. They should have better bar furniture than that, and this will maybe be the wake-up call they need. I'm sure their insurance company will send someone out to look the place over after this, so perhaps you just helped save someone else from getting another (possibly worse) injury.
In 1996 my husband lost his little finger, and half of his ring finger on his right hand. He was a diesel mechanic, so it was tough for him to readjust (that line of work was over for him pretty much, as was riding our thumb-throttle ATV's)... The "phantom pain" bothered him for a long while, sorry to say, still does somewhat. Even after all wounds were healed, he would feel like he had finger pain, and automatically go to grab that finger/fingers, only to recall they were gone. Probably not want you want to hear right now. 
Hopefully you'll be compensated fairly, but it wont really make up for your loss. I feel for ya, I can't imagine how it must hurt at this point.

OMG! I hope you're starting to feel better! I've seen some pretty questionable bar furniture around here, and even being paranoid and thinking the worst, I've never thought I could lose a finger because of a bar chair! Thanks for sharing, and here's wishing you a speedy recovery!

Quick update..I finally was able to take the bandage off for good!! All I'm left with now is this ugly finger (kind of looks like a cigar that was cut off then lit and then put out in an ash tray... )
Anyway most of the major pain is gone but things are still very sore and I have my good days and bad days. I think the healing process is the worst of it cause it's like 3 steps forward then 2 steps back, and so on. I've only had to hit the pain meds twice in the last couple of weeks so that's a good thing.
