I originally posted this in the KJ only forum, but I think all should be aware of the follo1800Discjockey.com- RUN LIKE HELL!

Posted: Sun Jul 06, 2008 7:04 pm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a listing on this site. I wasn't getting leads that I should have, and was told this by clients who ended up calling me. So I ran a test. I went to my listing and submitted a test quote request ONLY TO MYSELF. The result? I received a BUNCH of quotes and contact info from my competitors. I DIDN'T receive one on MY behalf. It looks like 800dj is taking lead info meant for specific DJ/KJs and sending the info to others. this site represents itself as one where the consumer CHOOSES which DJ/KJ they want to quote based on profiles. This is NOT supposed to be a multi-listing site- which is why they charge up to $50/month for the listing. The consumers are being misled as well, being subjected to a bunch of unsolicited quotes and calls.

Example: Say you are SmithKJ. I look through the profiles and see SmithKJ, and want THAT person to quote me. 800DJ sends (sometimes) a request to SmithKJ AND the COMPETITION. Though I originally wanted Smith KJ, he may lose not only this gig, but all the referrals that go with it!

I believe 800DJ does this to generate leads to it's paying listers to keep subscriptions running. They get a lot of stolen leads and think it's worthwhile.

If you have a free listing, you won't even get the contact info- they'll just pass it along.

I think this is one of the sleaziest practices I've ever seen. I tried contacting them on it with the result of my listing being yanked and no other reply.

In other words, if you are paying for a listing there, you are paying for your competition to bid against you.

*******************************************************************
Try it yourself. Go to the site, click on your listing, and submit a request for quote by filling out the form with a different name and whatever other details requested ( but using your own e-mail address). Submit it ONLY to you. I believe you will receive quotes from several of your competitors.
*******************************************************************

What this means is that YOU are laying out money for your competition. They are sending YOUR perspective clients, who have requested a quote specifically from YOU, quotes and contact info from your COMPETITORS.

Unlike some sites that TELL you they send out multiple quotes, this site misrepresents itself in order to get listings. Not only is it unethical, but they open themselves to a class action suit if someone gets a bug up their butt.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ADDITION TO ORIGINAL POST
I have been in contact with the owner, ( this is an addition to the original post above, where I had yet to hear from him.) Daryl Thomas, and someone who associated with him for some time. Apparently this has been going on for a long time, and Daryl does it on purpose. He has had complaints and subscriber losses, but the misrepresentation just suckers a few more in. He certainly has no intention of changing things.

If you have a free listing ALL of the quotes submitted to you will be unavailable for your use.
You will not receive contact info, while the others that it is passed on to will.

Just so you don't think there's any misunderstanding on my part;

To clarify:

As QUOTED from THEIR instruction page:

".......Please review the profiles and demos of all the Disc Jockeys you wish to contact, and when you're finished, click the 'Get Price Quote' button which is located at the right of each listing on this page."

In other words, the customer should ONLY hear from the DJs THEY CHOOSE, and no one else.

This is a serious no-no and leaves them open to a restraint of trade suit as well as misrepresentation.

BTW- It only requires 3 complaints to the Better Business Bureau for them to start an investigation. It is my hope that you will perform the self-test that I described and, if I am proven correct, that you make that call.

To clarify; DJIntelligence is not "software" you can buy. It is a hosted service which bills $100 annually.

Been at this for decades. If you read the site instructions as quoted, you can see that I have the RIGHT to expect to receive WHAT IS OFFERED, especially up to $1000 a year for some of the fees. This guy is in , civil, if not criminal, territory.

The very fact that those who list for free DON"T EVEN GET the leads directed TO THEM SPECIFICALLY, is a kicker unto itself. Daryl is STEALING those leads and passing them on...big court trouble if some one's hungry enough..

and the software mentioned has nothing to do with this thread, nor is DJ Intelligence in any way connected to 800 Disc Jockey or Daryl Thomas. The purpose of this thread is to warn people about the business practices of 800 Disc Jockey.com and to instruct them on how to test their own listings.

For $200 you can buy and have a standalone system on your site.

Let me try again. This thread's purpose is to warn those listing on 800 Disc Jockey.com of bad business practices. Why are people posting about other sites and software?

There are sites like this for various creative and entertainer types, and they all work the same. I'm a professional writer as well, and used to have free ads posted with sites like this dedicated to finding writers, artists, graphic artists, etc. The difference was that jobs were posted and the creative types got to bid on them. Problem was, if you had a free ad, your bid didn't get submitted until after the posting's end date, so you NEVER got the job. I decided to pay for the service on the best of these sites for a couple months to see if I could generate some work and found out my bids were still getting pushed to the back of the pack because I didn't have a "premium" account. I never got a single job from three different sites in three years of belonging to them.

It's shady and unethical, but not technically illegal, because if you read the fine print on those sites, I guarantee they've covered all the bases.

Still and all, doesn't hurt to warn others about these sites. Just be careful in how you do so, as libel is a punishable offense, and easily proven.

Swirl, though most of the sites work on the multi-listing method, they TELL you they do. This site does not. It sells listings to DJs a DEDICATED quote listings, and represents itself to the consumer as one where ONLY THE DJs THEY SELECT will answere- and where they won't get bonbarded with unsolicited info.

As fo how I am warning people: It's only libel if unproveable and untrue. Since I have been posting in various forums, I have received and documented feedback from many of those who self-tested and found themselves misled. I have witnessed printed copies of the web pages ( in case he tries to sneak in a change).

Not only that, I have been relating my own experiences. Also, I have counsel from 2 separate law offices who tell me that the passing over of the freebie listings alone would make any suit a "gimme" - the word used by BOTH of them.

I am not out for any gain here. I would like to see the site either re-vamped to full and honest disclosure, or shut down. Our industry is competitive enough without this sort of nonsense.

At the risk of repetition:

As QUOTED from THEIR instruction page:

".......Please review the profiles and demos of all the Disc Jockeys you wish to contact, and when you're finished, click the 'Get Price Quote' button which is located at the right of each listing on this page."

In other words, the customer should ONLY hear from the DJs THEY CHOOSE, and no one else.

This is a serious no-no and leaves them open to a restraint of trade suit as well as misrepresentation.

....it isn't libel if it's true. I don't pretend to know the legality in the criminal sense, but I'm told the company would fare very poorly in a civil court,

I also wish to re-iterate that this problem is NOT limited to the free listings. People paying top dollar for premium listings are having their quotes sent out too.

If I paid for a listing on that site, I'd be going after them with reckless abandon if there's nothing in the fine print that says they have the right to send the info out to other vendors.

But Joe isn't talking about what he can have on his personal website. He's talking about a service that is being offered by someone else... a service that lists other DJs and their advertisements for hired service/s... a service that people might find more easily in an internet search (when they are looking to hire someone for a party), and where Joe's site might not come up in that same Internet search.
