I was reading through the post "What did you sing last time" and was amazed by how many songs people sing in a night.
At your show or where you go singing how many times on an average do you or your patrons get to sing in a night (let's say you're there from start to finish) ?

I've found 4 to 5 times a night seems to be the norm, at my shows and those I go to as well.

Just looking over my list, if someone had been there right at the 9:00 start and stuck around all the way to 2:30 they would have sung five if I'm counting right. No one does that though.

My show averages 17-19 songs an hour, sometimes more, depending on the length of the songs....So, say 18 songs an hour, 9 singers, twice an hour....18 singers once an hour...4 times in a night. Just depends on the crowd.
When I go out and sing, and there is really only ONE place that I like to go and sing at (she's a great host!) I'm lucky to sing 3 times and I usually arrive at the beginning and hang out until my last song. Doesn't seem to matter how many people are singing, either, for some reason. At that show the host uses a CAVS and CDG player and there is a TON of time wasted between songs...So that's probably why the limited number of songs. There isn't usually a big rotation at that Thurs night show but she knows what she's doing...hence I'll sacrifice a song or two to sound good.

Depends on the night. Our busier nights if you are there from start to finish you could only end up singing 2-3 times. Slower nights a singer can avg out 4-5 times per night.

My nights are more like yours Lon. Sometimes a person can get in an extra song if they show up early, but for the most part a busy night is 2 to 3 times. I was just so surprised to see the long listing of songs sung in the other post. I work in a small bar, but most people that come in sing.

My shows vary greatly, from week to week, and show to show. Some nights are pretty slow, so the singers get to sing lots of times. Like last night, i only had 7 singers, (very slow night), so each of them got to sing all they wanted, basically.
But last Tuesdays show was a mad house, had 35 in rotation, so some of the singers only got 1 song, if they got their late. I wonder though, how can someone get in 18 songs in an hour, the math just doesn't work. An average song is 4 minutes, so that is only 15 songs per hour if you're lucky. I kinda figure on getting 14 songs per hour on average, so if you have 15 singers, a show that lasts 4 hours, the best they might get is 4 songs in a night. Just my humble opinion. But, question was , "What did you sing last night?" ,,,uuuhhhh,,,who can remember that far back??? hehe!! Take care all!

In the rural area I am in, we don't have that many singers, and we don't have real big crowds in general. It is not uncommon to have a 4-9 singer rotation, which means you can get up a lot of times.
I am a bit spoiled because of it, I will admit.
But what I don't get is the hosts who will do everything they can to limit singers in the case of a short rotation. Playing extra-long filler sets, waiting after start time before starting because they don't think they have enough singers, etc. If singers think they might luck into being able to sing more early, won't they show up?

How do you average 18 songs an hour? If you played them back to back with absolutely no break in between songs that would require them all to be 3 1/2 minutes. 19 songs would have to be 3.16 each. Most songs are simply not that short, nor do you actually play them back to back. The math just doesn't add up.

We routinely get 17-19 songs an hour.
1) We trim outros immediately. We pick the short versions of songs, like the CB "Can't You See".
2) We use CompuHost so everyone knows they are coming up. Dead air between singers is less than 10 seconds, usually.
3) We have lots of songs that are 2-3 minutes.

Thanks for that affirmation - I do the same thing - no long intros or outros. Like I said, it depends on the songs. Seriously, I let the next singer know they're up, as soon as the previous singer is winding down, they're moving up to the stage. I have asked the crowd if I'm moving too fast for them and they also respond with a resounding "NO! WE LOVE IT!" Again, depends on the length of the songs. I averaged first based on using CDGs and after a 4-hour show I'd have 64 slips (16 per hour, correct?) With Hoster it's faster than that marginally. So I will stand by my original estimate.

Karen: I have a question in regards to the long intro and outros, Do you deny the singer access to these songs, or just cut them short? I was at a show once where my buddy wanted to sing Hotel California, and the host denied it because of its length. I tried to explain to her that yes the intro is a tad on the long side, but once the vocals are done, you're more then welcome to slow fade out of it, and move on, but alas ,, Hotel .. Denied
I rarely crop the intro's of songs, because it gives me time to kill for random bar annoucements - and if there's a hefty outro, that'll just be time used to call the next singer..

I would NEVER crop the intro of a song. The outro, yeah, but like Chuck, I use this time to call up the next singer. Once they're up there, if the music is still going, I'll fade it out and quickly get the next song going. If the singer stays on stage after the vocals are done and there's still a long outro, I don't fade. It's their time, and they're welcome to it.
I try to keep time between singers to a minimum. I've never really paid attention to how many I've done in a night. I'll do it Tuesday and report back, along with what they sang for that other thread.

I dislike cattle-call rotations, one after another, as soon as the lyrics are done, POOF, you're done, and the music fades out. I've done it in the past when we've been slammed, and ALWAYS had complainers even when they knew WHY.
But I'd not like a show that cuts off the music in the beginning! OR denies a song. A friend of mine in california runs his rotations that way, and as much as I love this dude, I'd probably not like his shows where six minutes songs is the limit. I understand the delima, but one of my favorite songs to sing is "Crystal Ball", at "GASP" a whole six mins and 38 seconds... Not that I'm a glory hog, but I LOVE well executed songs.

On an "average" night, maybe 5 songs seems normal. There are nights it's more like maybe 3 or 4, but that would be a busy night. Slow nights, heck, I've done 8-10.
Now, at the place down the road where the new KJ loves to put up dance tunes, you're lucky to get in 3-4 on ANY given night.
(but I'm usually "fashionably late"..... I rarely get there before 10 or so) As do most of the crowd. If I were there by 9 when they start and it's slow, chances are I'd up those numbers by atleast 2.
I left my regular place last night (AFTER getting there late)... when to a new place about 15 minutes up the highway (got there after 11) and still got in I think 5 songs by 1:00. Not too big of a crowd there. (they just started doing karaoke recently)

Totally agree, I do G n R's November Rain and it has a bit of a long intro and God knows it a long song but its just a great song and people seem to always enjoy hearing it. I do realize though that alot of the attention is simply for the song itself and not me. I try not to do the song too often simply because it is long, but I wouldn't want someone to tell me I couldn't do it. Rudy.

New place up the highway-----which one is that? In Oregon City?? or something down in Woodburn. Woodburn and Brooks have a couple places that look like pretty good bets.
Let me know what that one is you were referring to maybe i could meet up with ya one night when u go there!

I've never denied anyone a song ... NEVER...it's their show, they sing the song of their choice. Above, I state AVERAGE. If a song has a 45 second to 1:00 outro, I'll cut that off. If a song has a long intro, I'll call the singer up while the intro is playing ... when they get to the mic, the lyrics are starting.
Again, I'll say this: AVERAGE! AVERAGE! Very few set rules about this. I'm not sure how it is possible to do an iron clad show and never take into consideration the crowd, the establishment, the time of year, special occasions, etc.
I DO know that having sat on the other side of the board at places where it takes FOREVER to get up and sing, even with a short rotation, I'll go on searching and find another place to sing.
Every place is different, every night at every place is different, people have choices about manu they like to sing, etc., etc., so the variables determine what happens.
I'm not sure how someone can turn a quick rotation into a negative, or why you'd even want to - it's hardly cattle call when people move up and down politely to allow the next singer to sing. I ask singers often if they think I run the rotation too quickly - even if it's 3-4 singers...they always respond "NO" as I noted above. Must be a regional thing. People in my neck-o-the-woods LIKE TO SING, that's why they go to karaoke. Am I missing something here? Don't think so...

I'm with you all the way. I have stopped going to places where the host will engage their regulars in a long dialog about what song they are going to sing next, while everyone else cools their heels. These can take a long time -- one host routinely took 1-2 minutes to do this. I think they still have the show, but it isn't well-attended and I never go there anymore. A shame, because it is pretty close and I like the sound. I just can't stand 10-12 songs per hour.
Babs did something last night which was kind of cool and showed good control. One singer was in the smoking area and was (I suspect not for the first time) a bit slow getting up when called. She just started the song and he missed half the first verse. He showed up on time the next time.
To me it's really the same issue as routinely starting 20-45 minutes after nominal start time. Someone else is assuming that my time is worthless, expecting me to show up at a start time and cool my heels waiting for them to get things together.
We have lots of 2-3 minute songs mostly because of an older crowd. So many of the newer songs are 4 minutes plus, so if you have a younger crowd you may run fewer songs just because of that.
