I built a rack setup, and it ended up being as heavy as a tower..
My laptop works just fine..

If you are looking for an ultimate in speed from our external storage, check out eSATA connection. It's much faster than either USB 2.0 or even Firewire 800. It's not available on most older model but you can build it in. I see many external drive enclosures with eSATA interface so it should not be a problem getting one built.
