You also might want to check out http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?p=104623 as there is already an attempt in the works to go for this record on August 1st 2008.

He's got a humorous video link there, but cannot sing. I loved it. Tack a couple of hours on that and you'll beat him.

Since he is going for the World Record, would you not be a record holder of KJ'ing? Or has someone (KJ) done it longer?

I would contact Guiness's book. I also think it would be a good idea to see if you'd be breaking a record for non stop KJing. I don't know if Guiness offers monetary rewards for breaking the records, but that might be an extra bonus for you.

In order to officially break a record, you have to have a Guinness representative on site to verify and monitor the record. And no, they do not offer monetary rewards. You get a paper statement of the record. I can't remember if it's already framed or if it's suitable for framing.

I don't believe that's completely accurate. There have been several people (from about 20 to 30 years ago) that have attempted to break the world's record on the NY Subway System for the quickest amount of time to ride every single train and stop at every station in the least amount of time (the record is something like 22 hours and change). Unless that's something that's been changed by the Guinness people, I'm sure that they did not travel the trains with those people. All they required were signed logs from the train conductors.

I am curious about the required rules for breaking this record..... I mean, besides the obvious of Bathroom, Food, and Water breaks... Does the person have to sing all different songs, or could he conceivably sing "My Way" all night long (or like every 12th song).

I looked up the official rules and you're right: a representative is not necessary, but does lend credence if you choose to ask one to attend. Only thing that sucks if you have one attend is that you are responsible for paying travel and accommodation expenses.

It's smart, however, to contact Guinness for official rules on whichever record you attempt to break, though, to make sure you're doing it right. I have no idea how they would officially verify any claims, but I assume that comes with the info you get when making the inquiry to Guinness.

I found some records from a 2006 attempt that they tried to go 50 hours (obviously didn't make it) and according to what I read, Guinness requires a 15 minute break every 4 hours. There cannot be more than 30 seconds between songs and no song can be repeated within 2 hours. My personal song list is up around 300 so that's roughly 20 - 25 hours of music without repeats. Throw in the stuff that I don't like to sing because of the long instrumentals and I get songs that give me more downtime. :) (Money by Pink Floyd, La Grange by ZZ Top, Money For Nothing by Pink Floyd... Free Bird... etc...)

I'm actually seriously considering an attempt myself.

Promotion is nice but oney in ones pocket now is better.

Lets say 48 hours total my min quote would be $5000 + cost of a hotel room for me and my staff of 4 near the event. We would also require a case of water cold every 6 hours. 6 meals for 4 people snacks 4 times a day. All bar tabs paid.

I would look total cost somewhere close to $6000 to $7000.

Song list must be submitted 7 days in advance. All breaks are timed and scheduled by us the karaoke company

Dye, why not ask for $10K, first class air and a Dom Perignon on ice?

My point was what you could reasonably expect such a gig to pay.

As it was presented by the OP, it was some kid trying to make a name by trying to break a record. He was originally going to use his own machine. How much cash do you really think they'll pony up for this stunt?

I've done corporate karaoke gigs like happy hours at conferences and been paid $1600 for a 2-1/2-hour show. It's reasonable to expect that a major company would invest that in getting an experienced and entertaining karaoke host. Not some kid.

As KJ's, we are ultimately only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Sorry Dan, doing a show for charity is one thing but going for a record or anything else is different. It is not charity. There are costs going for records. Speed and altitude records require the purchasing of the vehilces to do so. This is no different. If they require a professional, then they need to pay for a professional. try telling a plumber or mechanic you want them to do 40 hours work but you can only pay them for ten. This is the same thing. Again someone wants something for next to nothing. If they can't afford it, then they can't do it. Sorry that's reality.

Tim, athough it would be BEST to use a professional kj for this record attempt, it is by no means necessary.

It could conceivebly be done by the attempter purchasing music equipment for under $1000 and having friends either changing discs or computerizing and auto-running it. Or to be MORE accurate, imho, for every KJ thinking he could charge $6k for the job, 100 other KJs would do it for much much less. The $6k-quoted KJ would be sitting at home watching as someone else worked the gig.

Karaoke is not rocket science. Any human being can change discs. And since this is for only ONE SINGER, not 50, personality nor professionalism is required to break the record. Set up one mic and automate the attempt.

I would rather pocket, if offered, the job for thousands less than $5000-$6000 and i'm a professional. That's just ludacris to perceive you could get that $ for this type of gig. It's not necessary to use $20k worth of equipment or 20 years of experience to pull it off. And it doesn't require special vehicles or skills to complete.

It would be easy to get volunteers who would want to be part of the record attempt and would help for free- as would a venue for the exposure it would/could receive...

Sorry, but this job doesn't require a professional to complete...just a few friends or volunteers with minimal karaoke equipment and knowledge how to use that equipment and the ability to either change discs or point a mouse...

So SIMPLE even a caveman could do it..... THAT IS, unless like you pointed out Tim, that if they required a professional, which is doubtful, then they would have to use one...although NOT having to pay outrageous rates like $6000 :)

He can do whatever he wants, however, if one wants to use a professional, one should be prepared to pay professional rates.

People renovate their own homes or work on their cars and absolutely nothing wrong with that. But if they have to do a major repair that requires a professional, don't expect them to do it at a fraction of the price because it's a "big" or "long" job.

Well, obviously, this kid does NOT have a few friends that he feels would be up to the task, so this job DOES require the services of a Professional... otherwise this kid would NOT have asked for one, and would be perfectly happy using his own home system.

That being said, I'm sure that this kid is not going to be shelling out $6000 plus for those services, so, unless he can find all of those UNDERCUTTERS out there (that everyone has posted about for years in these forums), or one of the KJs here decides to cut the kid a break (with some of the rates we have discussed a few posts back) he's gonna be S.O.L. on breaking this record any time soon.

OK... I'm CONFUSED!!!!! Aren't you located on Colorado? If I'm reading this right, Jamkaraoke is located in NJ, so that's where I assume this kid is located. I'd be real curious to know what kind of deal you plan to offer this kid. and how it's going to work out.
