I was in Times Square at the HA comedy club on Tuesday night. This has two lounges, one for the comedy and one for karaoke (although I think the KJ fancies hisself as a bit of a comic).

After singing a few songs, I asked the KJ if he would mind playing one of my own discs. He told me he couldn't as the sound wouldn'tcome out of the monitor speakers, only the front house speakers!

Now he is using CDGs, he didn't even look at my discs, so he didn't even know what I had. How is it that he knows immediately that my discs won't play properly in his (CAVS) system while his are fine? Sounds like a lame excuse to me.

What really gets me is why the KJ's have to fabricate these lies instead of just telling the truth that they would prefer not to play a customer's disc. I can live with that and accept it is the KJ's choice. I do not take kindly to being lied to though!

You should have rebutted "Perfect I don't like the monitor speaker anyway!"

Gotta LUV those KJs that lie. About a year ago, I was at a local place in Manhattan called Tracy J's. They use a CAVs system (which I didn't know beforehand). I went up to the KJ and asked her if she could play my discs. Rather than saying "No," she asked me to check her book first to see if she had the song. OK. I did that. She didn't have the song. 2nd trip to the KJ.... "You don't have the song I would like to sing listed in your book. Can you play my disc." The she responds with the fact that she has a CAVs system, and that she's been told not to play discs because it cause the sytem problems, and then they have to reboot it. I then found a song in her book, and handed up a slip. My friend got called up, other people got called up, and I was still sitting there waiting. All of a sudden, 10 people walked in to the place, and before I knew it, some of them were called up. All this time, I sat in my seat, patiently waiting for my turn. When I saw this happen, I finally got up to approach the KJ. Before I even said a word, she looked at me and had half a grin on her face, and she said that I was going to be up next. At this point, I just told her to trash my slip because I didn't feel like singing anymore. Then I walked off. She had a look like a deer in the headlights. I then sought out the Manager, and told her that I was leaving (and why).

She may have been told this & she's gullible enough to believe it, but pushing you back that far was unexcuseable.

to be honest the cavs system I bought for the hotel does just that and needs rebooting...I simply thought it was the scdg discs cos it doesnt load the higher numbers

I can accept that as being true, but this KJ could have said something to me from the very beginning (rather than it taking two trips up to her to find out that she wouldn't/couldn't accept personal CDGs). By me having to approach her 3 times, I probably appeared to be one of those PITAs that us KJs B&M about, so she purposely shuffled my request slip around (when I finally gave one to her). Of course, when I spoke to the Manager, she (the Manager) was all apologetic about the situation. She saw that I was there and I was spending money (both of food and drinks a good hour before the show even started). She (the Manager) said that she would talk to the KJ, and I told her that I was still leaving (because I was upset at the way the KJ treated me).

Any KJ who won't play a customer's disc is an idiot. Some KJ's think that their version is always the best. Just because you like a version the best doesn't mean that someone else doesn't prefers a different version, and that's the one they want to sing. It makes the customer feel happy when they sing from their own disc.

As far a Cavs not playing custom disc or disc with say 1200 songs. I have an older 203G and a newer one. They both play most every format available. CD+G, SCDG, DivX, MPEG4, VCD. I have experienced a few times on the older player that I had to reboot the system. This has never happened on my newer 203G, so whatever problem there may have been, I believe it has been fixed in newer models. Both players play disc that I have that have 1200 songs with no problems, though the older one does not play DivX perfectly, so on the 3 disc I have, I only play them in my newer player, no problem.

I use the USB with an external hard drive with my own library with the Cavs. There is no way to switch between the disc player and usb without rebooting the whole system. Easy fix - By a seperate disc player !

Some people don't like confrontations --it was just easier for the KJ to tell you that then to explain he doesn't play customer cdg's. I could imagine some people would try to insist or complain about not playing their cdgs.

Thats my take ..just easier and non confrontational

"WOW what a great job on that song"
" You'll be up soon "
" I'll give you the better rendition of that song"
" Of course I don't mind restarting the song"
" I have the largest library in town"
" Sure you can sing the same song you just sang last rotation"
" NO! the song wasn't that bad ...just need a little practice on it"

If a new person sings and they are horrible instead of saying great job I'll say something like what a special rendition.

My biggest continual lie is "You're up in three" whether they are or not. It's just to get them off my back. I've got to stop doing this and take my lumps.

We havnt had anybody walk in with a cd for years. It is archaic. If you have a very special need and only have a few songs in your repertoire then I suggest you put it on flash drive and we will gladly play it for you. If you want to complain I will introduce to the owner.

ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhh no i didnt just read that..since a KJ WONT play your disc he is an idiot....Im sorry but I will disagree..its their show not your ..people need to learn to respect the rules of the company hosting the show..its like alot of people like to try to bring drinks on the stage at my show...it doesnt happen..and after 8 yrs most people it isnt a problem..matter of fact I got singers that yell..No drinks on stage if I dont see it first....

Tim that is a slap in the face and I resent it. With cd clone I can steal a whole cd in 2 minutes and they will not know the difference. Bring in your cd I will get them all... That is one of the most rediculous posts I have seen here yet.. If you want to accuse me of being unscrupulous then look me eye ball to eyeball and face me as man to man and a gentleman. Do not question my integrity or insult my business in a public forum. That is unprofessional and about as childish as you can get. I am a pro ARE YOU?

I brought my own disk to a place once, and the KJ told me not to worry, "we have all the Sound Choice disks but like maybe one." It seemed doubtful, but I kept a straight face.

Don't worry... I didn't take it that way. I just felt I needed to add a little bit more to what I had posted. I know of several KJs that have had similar issues with their CAVs machines too (needing to reboot them several times during the night).
