You would plug someone else's flash drive into YOUR unit? That may well be the scariest thing I've heard in awhile!
I can check a disc in a standalone device I carry, but how do you know what's on the flash drive? Very dangerous, my friend...

Karyoker, you may be honest but for every honest host out, how many pirates are running shows. And you know that as well as I do. And yes I'm a professional.

"IF" you were the type of KJ that would rip a song from someones FLASH DRIVE....you don't have to steal it ...JUST ASK the singer if you could add it to your library ......Chances are some one who is carrying songs on a flash drive from show to show isn' the type to worry about you copying his drive........ I don't think many KJ who use computers are secretly sitting waiting to steal songs ...Thats a little far fetched IMHO. but funny !!!!!!
But I agee I wouldn't use anyones flash drive I didn't know ...well

In my area it wouldn't be scary. It is a small town -- we know just about everyone. And if you are like me and have Autorun disabled at all times, it isn't really dangerous.
Not that I have ever had anyone ask me to plug one in. But were it to happen, I could do it with a great deal of confidence.

We have a guy that brings in a flash with george strait No words just the music. He is good... I have recorded him right back on his flash drive. When a stranger comes in and is looking at a book before they sing they are welcomed and I know where they grew up and pretty much all about them.
The thought of a virus never crossed my mind until somebody mentioned it on a forum.
Last 2 years:
CD 0
Flash drive 4
Complaint about wrong version 1 We immediately switched to another song in seconds.

to me, it's not about trusting your people. Some people can get a virus and not even know it.
I play the ARCHAIC discs in a separate player. Just because I'm computerized doesn't give them the right to possibly destroy my computer!

I get about 6 or 7 replies deep in most of these threads before I'm compelled to throw in my two cents.
I have a computerized system, and I don't play any discs ... period. That's a choice and it works for my show. On the table I use to make the show happen I have a large strip light. I call it the fence. On the near side is the row of slips waiting to be queued. On the other side, is the discard pile, and my computer and equipment, and my beer, a can of lysol, a fan ... I'm the only one allowed on the other side of the fence. But you'd be surprised at how many people will bring up a slip and instead of adding it to the tidy row of slips on the one side of the fence, they toss their slip over the fence into the discard pile. Then they'll come up a while later and ask why I haven't called them up ... 'Gee, I don't know, lets test your IQ first ...'. I get regular singers who've seen the drill 1000 times still hunt me down when I'm outside having a cigarette, they wait for me to come out of the restroom ... I repeatedly tell them just leave it up on the table, mxer, keyboard, etc., cause if you give it to me here, and I put it in my pocket ... It states right in my rules, handing me a slip or asking me in passing if I'll cue you up for a particular song is not wise. I have 100 things going on in my head during a show and it is human nature to forget sometimes. WRITE DOWN YOUR SONG AND BRING IT UP TO THE TABLE ... (but don't be an idiot and put it in the discard pile). If I'm there I'll gladly take it, if not, I'll know where it goes when I see it.
As for someone not getting called up, when things get crazy - every now and then someone's not going to get called up they way they want. Last Friday I had five new singers to every old one - all night. One of my regulars had the balls to say, 'I've only sang once all night' and got kind of pissy - he was visibly disturbed by the whole deal. He was third in the rotation, only two other people had sung more than once. Right on the mic, I asked him if he was done, and he muttered something, and gave me a look. I called up the next singer. I got him up about three songs later. I won't stand for drunks making a scene on my stage. I think it's presumptuous to assume a KJ does something like not call up a singer on purpose unless they have a reputation for that kind of behavior (which I don't), in which case the manager should be consulted. Not for a one time deal. I'd rather someone that pulled that crap at one of my shows ... not come back. Usually, people who do it at my show, do it once and never again. I am in control and will never bow to the unruly. I've walked off stage and told a singer once --- 'fine you do it'. She didn't want to. It's not all fun and games, and sometime the law has to be laid. I'll ban someone for two weeks for a first offense - without batting an eye. My owner's give me that freedom. I'm no singer's bxtch, and I'm fair and consistent, but at the same time a loving, feeling, sensitive human being - who makes the two bars I work a lot of money.

So if I did get a virus I have a laptop for backup.. Then I would reinstall XP and the time consuming part is disabling all the background services. I reinstall on a regular basis anyway. Windoze has a way of self destructing and becoming less efficient...
This week I will adding a new mixer and probably will shift to a tower for the main frame. The 2 unit is too heavy anyway. I will reinstall XP and pop online to reactivate.
The only reason I go online with the DAW is reactivate or system updates. With wireless I am protected behind the computer actually connected to the internet..

It makes the customer feel happy when they sing from their own disc.
As far a Cavs not playing custom disc or disc with say 1200 songs. I have an older 203G and a newer one. They both play most every format available. CD+G, SCDG, DivX, MPEG4, VCD. I have experienced a few times on the older player that I had to reboot the system. This has never happened on my newer 203G, so whatever problem there may have been, I believe it has been fixed in newer models. Both players play disc that I have that have 1200 songs with no problems, though the older one does not play DivX perfectly, so on the 3 disc I have, I only play them in my newer player, no problem.
Felix the KJ[/quote ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhh no i didnt just read that..since a KJ WONT play your disc he is an idiot....Im sorry but I will disagree..its their show not your ..people need to learn to respect the rules of the company hosting the show..its like alot of people like to try to bring drinks on the stage at my show...it doesnt happen..and after 8 yrs most people it isnt a problem..matter of fact I got singers that yell..No drinks on stage if I dont see it first....
Out from the depths............er, could you please learn to spell and punctuate?

Even though I have an extensive library of legitimate cdg's , I will play a customers CD, with the explaination that if it skips or sounds abnormal,, that I will address my audience that this was that person's personal cd and not mine.
I take extreme pride in keeping my original disc in perfect condition, in fact I have a guarantee that if my disc skips, jumps,or doesn't play right, that they have the option of doing another song right then and there or to look up another song and I will put them in as soon as they find one.
Keeping this in mind, especially on a busy night, I clean and polish my cdg's on a regular basis.
Now for those using Cavs systems or any other system, unless the person is a fool and doesn't know how/what/where to make adjustments on their system, then I can see why they would lie...they just have NO CLUE !!!
I tell you one thing, if "Cueball" comes to your show, you better bow down, for he is "Da Man".........plus it doesn't hurt when he comes all the way from NEW YORK and brings a Cheesecake.....Yes he's a GOD.... ..

Hey there Rodney!!!! I miss you too! I've been keeping pretty busy with my regular job... just waiting for when they drop the other shoe on me and tell me goodbye. As for Karaoke, I haven't done a show in about 9 months now... my work schedule makes it extremely difficult to be able to commit to a place on a regular basis. I still travel around to other shows tho. I'll be visiting Alma in Chicago in mid-September. I may try to work in a visit to one of Bab's shows while I'm out there too. Chicago will be State 19 on the "Cueball National Karaoke Tour."
BTW... You know that Robin Butt got married the other year. Name's now Robin Sanford. Do you still see Stephanie and Kathy?

Well although we seem to be laboring at our jobs, we all still are very fortunate to even have one..at least that's what I tell myself... .
Between me and my wife we made way too much money last and and now Uncle Sam seems to be living at OUR HOUSE...I'm ready ready to kick the lazy arse out... .
Yes I knew Robin got married and no word from Kathy or Stephanie for years and years...
Tell everyone I said Hello

Stephanie came through last year on a country wide tour of the States... She posted wonderful tour blog on JOLT. My lady Ruthie and I met her and her friend Debbie... they just rocked the house
All of it documented on JOLT ... of course, only to have the site go down later and the loss of all that personal and professional information!
Oh well!
