My family and I are planning on having karaoke at our family reunion. The reunion is less than two weeks away, and I'm starting to panic a bit about the karaoke side of things. Our reunion is being held up north in a small town, so there's so way we can rent karaoke equipment or have a person come in and do it. Thus, I've been assigned the task of coming up with a karaoke set-up. This is what I have:

- A Laptop and many Karaoke disks that I can play on it
- An Acoustic B20 Bass amp that can be used for vocals
- A Nady Starpower Mic
- A TV that can be hooked up to the laptop and will be used to display the words

OK, so I was thinking of a set-up like this:

Bass Amp
v (Vocals)
Microphone

TV
v
Laptop
v
Speakers of some sort (for the music itself)

But I'm completely lost as to what I can use for speakers. I have a Vox 30watt AD30VT guitar amp, but don't know if there's any way I can hook that up to my laptop and have sound come through that. We don't have a ton of money to work with, probably less than $100, so I need something relatively inexpensive. Any ideas?

The speakers in guitar amps aren't designed for PA reproductions (full music). Good chance you will blow the speaker. I'd probably opt for the bass amp for the music (if it has a high frequency driver) & the guitar amp for vocals (still not a good idea). But again neither one of these are designed for any kind of music playback. The speakers inside are designed for the purpose that they were intended - guitar & bass.
$100 isn't really going to help much. If you could up the budget a bit you could get something like this

You can still hook the laptop into it for music as well.

Thanks for the response. I've decided that I'll just stick with using the bass amp for vocals and won't use the guitar amp for music. But what I was wondering about is if I could use something like these for the music playback from the laptop:

Altec Lansing 2-PC Laptop USB Speakers
Logitech Z-2300 THX-Certified 200-Watt 2.1 Speaker System

Now bare in mind this will be taking place inside a pavilion on a stage that is no more than 10x10. It doesn't have to be incredibly loud, just loud enough so that the people on stage, as well those directly around it, can hear the music. The bass amp I'm working with can go up to 20watts and gets surprisingly loud, so I'm looking for speakers that can compete with it. Do you think something like this would work?[/url]

Well I can tell you from experience that 20 watts is not very loud at all. I was at a private party (attending not running a show) that was using a 80 watt karaoke system with an 8" speaker & 2 4" speakers & it really didn't do the job. Everyone didn't want to have to 'crowd' around the stage to hear it. Just food for thought.

You can try the computer speakers for the music but willing to bet it will not be loud enough for the intention and the vocals will more than likely be much hotter than the music volume.

OK, thanks again. So I've been tossing around more ideas as far as the music playback is concerned, and am now considering buying a stereo w/speakers and running my laptop's sound through it via the headphone jack of my computer to the aux port of the stereo. I'm hoping to get the music so that it's relatively (though not very) loud. I was considering this stereo:

Sony Mini Hi-Fi

I assume that the sound I'd get from this would be louder than any computer speakers in the price range. I'm obviously not expecting anything amazing, just something that plays the music decently for a couple of hours (I doubt I'll be hosting anymore karaoke parties in the future). For the one-time only use purposes, does anyone think this can work?

Well it would definitely work better than the little computer speakers. It would also be something that you could utilize for other things as well - even if it's just hooking your computer up to it for a little extra oomph.
