scorp I am not a kj but yeah I use it...I think a couple of coloured lights twirling and flashing to the music encourage the lights to go down and folk to loosen up enough to get on the floor and boogie...just my opinion

Outside after dark it is a must at least some pars. The lighting for the KJ has to be yellow lights or the bugs will take over.

I personally don't use lights for my public karaoke shows, although I do have a range available for private functions. My prices are low in my area, so that I can financially compete with other shows, and I am adverse to use a light on a regular basis and then pay the maintenance and/ or replacement costs if anything was to go wrong.
I am lucky as two of my venues have an in house lighting system, one is very good, and the other.... well the landlord is proud of his mirror ball and rope lights
I do however, quiz any new members of staff which local shows use lights. They usually can't tell me. They can tell me which shows have a fair rotation, a good selection of discs and a dynamic host.
In my opinion, although lights can add to a show particularly a show with a large stage, they needn't be a priority.

I've never had the need for it.

I have 8 par 38 around the stage controlled by an NSI light mixer. 4 beat activated lights for the dance floor. It makes a really big difference in the atmosphere & the way the singers feel more like they are in the spotlight rather than just standing on the floor of a bar holding a mic.

Personally, lighting makes a world of difference on setting the mood of the place. Most of the public gigs, ie bars, they have their own lighting so it's hard to control that. However, for private gigs, I usually use mirror ball simulator, some LED par cans for back splash and a few color changing LED balls for ambiance.
I also have a lot more lighting but usually I don't use those unless it's a DJ gig or both. I had people comment about how the lighting made the difference in their mood while singing. They did feel like they were a star on a stage singing for the audience.

I actually agree exactly with what eben said about what lighting can do to change the mood of the pub, if i had the finances i would have a bright magenta light for all of my children's parties (apparently magenta calms kids down), and mainly orange backwash for public venues (which should make people, spend more, drink more, be more sociable and in theory sing more).
Sadly i have't had much experience with lights suitable for a mobile disco, the show i trained at only did karaoke, and they had one light which decorated the stage with moving stars and all the other rigs i have worked on have been in house, eg holiday park stages. So if anyone could recommend a reasonably priced set of lights, which would be suitable for karaoke and more importantly cabaret please let me know.

4 par38 and a light stand is where I would start and see if that fits your show and your budget. The led par38 seem to be a winner with people but they cost more than your standard flood par38. The advantage to the led par 38 is low heat and longer bulb life.
A controller would be nice if you had 8 or more lights but not nesessary for 4 just use a plug strip and an extention cord. You can always add on to your light show at your own pace.
The standard gels are blue, yellow green and red, if you want different colors find a theater supply and they will have a wide varity of colors.

I invested in several lights and the stands and truss to put them on, not to mention the controller and relay packs. They are part of the equipment my son, Johnny, is buying from me. He has had nothing but trouble with them, and isn’t even using them any more. I am doing a wedding reception this coming Saturday, they would really like to have some lighting effects, so I am going to see if I can get some of them operational without spending a small fortune. Yes lighting is a great way to enhance the mood. Suggestions for lights these are awesome since they have just started to come out are. The American DJ led dmx starball and the colored starball are awesome effects. They have sound active mode and also can be linked together. The REVOS are awesome also. I use the Chauvet Color Strip it is sound active. The best thing about these are you can plug as many lights as you want in a power strip. But I also am able to get these at a cheaper price and use them and see what they are since I am a dealer. Good luck

Lights ... shxt yeah I use them. The more the better. I have a Rotosphere, two lasers (one green, one red), a four bulb bank, two REVOs (II and III), a Mini-Gressor, an Abyss II, and a Mine II (which I turn on during massive dance attacks). I use two strip lights (one in the window (white) and one on my table (amber) as my 'fence', along which I run my slips. No one but me is allowed on the other side of the fence. Lights to me aren't enough. I use a fogger which really makes the lights dance and puts a nice haze in the bar, and all that with loud (tuned) music, makes people go bananas. I've worn our the motors on an Asteroid and a Cosmos already, and am on my second Rotosphere.
I don't think I could do a show without my lights. They're as much a part of the show as the microphones.
In my town we have eight bars in a three block radius. The competition can get stiff. No one can touch my show (for karaoke and dance). There is a DJ in town that packs 'em in at one joint on Saturdays and the same place does bands on Friday. The town was okay until this joint opened up, now it has exploded. I prop all the other DJs and bars (except one - and I just don't mention it or their DJ (who's a punk)). Four of the bars are packed on the weekends and my show is the only thing going on on Wednesdays ... no one wants to touch it and I love that. Makes a guy think he's doing okay.
I don't want to see or hear people (other than when on stage or the dance floor), so I crank the music and turn off the house lights and dazzle 'em with show lights. When I want them to go home I turn down the music and turn up the house lights.
Lights ... yep!!!!
