I forgot my little musicians dolly last night and had to carry all my equipment into the bar ....Thank God I use a laptop and my powered mixer last night.

But I realized I'm getting too old to carry those 50lb plus 15" speakers - Not so much OLD but I could feel my back squishing together as I lugged them in and out last night ......

I use 12" liteweights for my very small DJ gigs --- Can the same llite weight 15" do a good job? I've used the Peavey PR12 in the past and also the B212 from Behringer. BOTH GREAT for small gigs . ANYONE use the PR15 from Peavey or other passive 15" LITE WEIGHT as your main gigging speakers ?

I feel your pain! After lugging peavy sp4(dual 15) up stairs for a company x-mas party last year, that my band was playing at, I bought a pair of the pr15.

They have a differnt tone to them,due to the plastic exterior.We have used them in the band and they sound fine ( drums ,guitars,vocals and bass).also have ran canned music with them and I'm happy with them.

There not the best speaker cab (always a difference in views on that anyway) but POUND for POUND I'm satisfied with them.

Tonight we're going to use them for our drummers digital drums for stage volume.

hey Jam I am 5'4" and now have no anterior cruciate ligament in either knee and my speakers are 81.57lbs according to the online converter (37kg) so I kinda feel my days are over lifting them too. But I am married to the next best thing to a scot and to him whats not broke shouldnt be fixed...and I dont think that applies to wives

I use them as well (Peavey PR15), at some mobile gigs. Not the absolute best sound, by any means, but pretty good. I've also used the Behringer b212, and the Peaveys are better. I also use a PR12 for a floor monitor.


The sound vs. weight trade-off is definately worth it for mobile use, in my opinion.

If you're looking for 15s, then go with Yorkville NX750s, though the NX 55P 12s are great sounding too.

Those speakers are still 60lbs plus.

I would add a PR-Sub from Peavey to your twelves. 32 pounds, 15", gives pretty decent bass. Of course you have to add some sort of a crossover, but the Behringer EQs have a mono sub out with adjustable crossover freq.

I still see many, IMO very stupid KJs that always carry all of their equipment by hand. A dolly is so much easier. And I think it looks way more professional than lugging it in and out.

But he origianlly posted he FORGOT his dolly that particular night.

Take a survey of KJs that use a dolly.

My bet is more don't use one than do.

Everyone I ever worked with had one. Several i've worked with had a rock n roll that would either act as a dolly or lay down as a full cart. But it wasn't about many, it was about the OP stating he forgot his one particular night.

I use a dolly, too. Couldn't live without it. My EV's (70lbs) would kill me other wise. My rack is on wheels, too.

81 lbs??? Holy $hit! That is a lot of weight for a woman. Respect! But you should really thinking about down-"pounding".

My JBL JRX125s are 94 pounds each, while my JBL JRX118SP powered subs are 89 pounds each!

Hauled all four tonight at a wedding, plus a stacked lighting rig, and another full system outside for the ceremony.

Okay, yeah, my back is killing me and I'm exhausted too...

yeah I know but if you had witnessed the tantrum from my husband this week when I purchased a new mixer...then you would know that its unlikely to happen soon...to be honest we have never had these speakers working to full capacity...so I should think about it...but they are only a bit over two years old. Actually I made a mistake they are 29.5kg net, and 33.6kg gross so I apologise for misleading...just went to the website. I dont really understand how gross and net can apply to speakers but thats what it says.
I dragged them out into the living room a few days ago so as I could hook up the full rig to the new mixer (dragging is about all I can do at present till I have this 2nd operation)...glad my next gig isnt till sept 6 cos I have a fair amount to learn. Well after useing the pr15 friday,saturday and sunday the drummer doesn't want to use the other 15 cabnets again,he said they sound fine and load out better.

I've been using the pr 15s for 3 years, and to me they sound great, and are durable. I DJ more than KJ, but many times public speaking is required for my host and myself, and I receive many complements for the clarity of the music and voice. The 15s provide a much better bass than the 12s, and at $200 or less delivered, are a steal. They have a filter, so when I feel lazy......I run each one to a pv118(also has freq. filter), and leave out the middle man(cross-over.....I do have one, and I do use it sometimes...). Gives me a little more power too.......just my opinion, but you certainly have to think of that "back", Jam, my man......good luck on your choice

Sidewinder - I think most kj's would are using some sort of handtruck/dolly.

At my Saturday gig I don't - I back right up to the side door and it's actually easier by hand to just walk the equipment in. I set up right by the back door so I'm not lugging equipment past customers. But I understand your point no matter how moot it is.

The dolly is not the question you still have to pick up the speaker and most times mounted on a stand. - GRANTED there is nothing better sounding than a heavy wood cabinet speaker. That I understand.

If I was DJ/KJing a private GIG or Wedding and getting paid $1000 a night
I'll lug a lot of equipment in ---lights - racks --etc. But for MANY MANY KJ's who are doing a weekly "BAR" gig getting paid $125-$175 per night . lugging 100lb speakers in just doesn't make sense.

I also do not believe for a second that ANY singer is going to measure the professionalism of a show based on whether a company uses a dolly to wheel their stuff in or not..... I had to laugh when I re-read that.

Not that I use 100lb speakers, but I definitely won't sacrifice my sound just because something is lighter weight. A good wedding is great if you can get it every week, but often it's not a steady reliable source. A bar gig is at least a steady source provided you are good enough to keep it going. Private parties are definitely where the real money is, but can't always count on that they will be there.

I used to use a Dolly, but she broke up with me, so now I use a Karen.... ...seriously...I'll bring a dolly, and end up hand carrying, just because it's quicker.........ok BD....I can just hear the customers now......."well his sound system sounded awesome, and his selection was humongous, but his non-dollying, cavemanistic way of bringing in his rig was so un-professional..... ....I'd never hire him.....
