Definately use it. Multiple LED Par's and an effects light. Does wonders when people are singing.

I LOVE lights… but naw, I don’t use them anymore.

I did when I had a steady gig at a neighborhood bar and they stood set up, but most places I do anymore, parties, picnics… they wouldn’t work.

When I was a Sound-guy many moons ago, at a larger club, I tried to talk the owners into some lights for the dance floor, but they weren’t interested. (Edit: they did have a mirrored ball.)

They said flashing lights caused some people to have epileptic fits (which I happen to know is true), but I suspected they just didn’t want to deal with them for some reason.

Maybe with 350-person crowds, the likelihood of that happening was greater.

I dunno… :?

Lighting made a HUGE difference to my shows. I'm lucky enough to have a great relationship with my club owner. I invited him out to a well known karaoke venue. He wasn't impressed with the sound or the song selection, but he was very impressed with their lighting. I convinced him to start slow, and purchase just two lighting fixtures (the ones that he liked the most from the other venue).

Fast forward about six months later, his revenue has more than doubled! He has added (and paid for) several light fixtures, and asks me if there's anything else he can buy! We now have two large disco balls, 3 gobos, 4 pars, several black lights and a laser. One of the best purchases that we made to help it all come together was a hazing machine. It was pricey, but it was worth it. Hazing machines are way better than fog machines. Fog machines are too dense, and make it hard to breathe for most people.

The best part.....the fixtures are permanent, which means I don't need to haul anything!

Flashing lights give some people epyliptic fits ... ah shucks. Some of my singers send others into full shock. If people can't handle the lights, it's probably not the venue or the night for them.

Fog machines ... the fog is water and glycerin (sugar alcohol). The 'I can't breathe' thing is all in the mind. I love the density it makes the lights even better.

Go Lights!!!!

OK, I only know one "Down Under" joke..

Young man asks cute gal, "Would you like a tree limb?"

She says, "No, why would I like a tree limb"..

He says, "OK then, how about a root?"

Yup, lighting is an integral part of my setup.

I run a goalpost type setup (Giraffe) which can support a LOT of lighting.

However, my current display for regular gigs is:
4 * Moonflowers working in synch
2 * Double Derbys
1 * 6m Rope Light wrapped around rigging

I also sometimes use:
1 * Gobo with "special event" projections (Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas, Anniversary etc)
1 * Effect Laser (looks great but needs a bigger room)

I am thinking of adding a few PARs to light th singer a bit more too.

I'd like to move more into DMX based lighting - it intrigues me muchly.

Also as said before - fog machines DO NOT create an "I can't breathe" sensation - it's not smoke - it's fog. And I scent mine nicely anyhow. But with most things - less is more. Then again, I do want a heavy fog machine to get that "fog sat on the floor" effect.

Considering a bubble machine also - as kids love these.

And to the above poster who says they charge extra for lights - I am thinking of moving in that direction.

Flashing Mace lights work well for me here for karaoke. It definately UPS the atmosphere and creates good energy.

A few years back my strobe light caused some sickness to a child at a mitvah so i stopped bringing them for fear of liability. They can cause seizures.

Fog machines have been known to set off hotel and large venue smoke detectors.

Bubble machines are great outdoors but create a slippery dance hazard indoors. We used to use edible grape or cherry bubble mix and challenge kids to see how many bubbles they could catch/eat in a 2 minute period.

I no longer DJ much so a lot of stuff is collecting dust. In my experience Martin lights have worked best and lasted longest.

They really REALLY shouldn't. Either the fog machine needs servicing or the smoke detectors are faulty.

I am just getting into purchasing lighting for my karaoke show. It is hard to decide what do get. So far I have a tripod stand and one Chauvet VUE I LED moonflower light. I'm saving up to get a few more good lights. They do make a difference in the mood of the venue.

Just make sure whatever you get, if it is really bright, moves around, flashes, etc...is NOT aimed at the singer, these are much better suited for dance floors - if you must have it by the singer, have it behind them & pointing up so it isn't flashing in the audiences eyes eitehr. This is a major distraction for most. You want some simple stationary par cans that you just illuminate the singer & singers area/stage.

I have only used it for one show so far. I had to move the stand closer to where the patterns flashed on the middle of the dance floor. Where I first had it, it was flashing on the mixer and and singing area. Once I moved it and angled the light correctly, it looked great on the dance floor. I do think the par lights are more so what I was looking to get. Are there any sets that are better than others?

I have, but don't currently use at karaoke gigs, a rig that I picked up at G/C. It has four par cans on it and you can change the gels. It comes with a controller that does patterns and speeds. It is tall enough that it can be over the singers but not shining in the audience's face. I can't remember what I paid for it, but it really wasn't that much. Like I said, I'm not using it now, and any lights I pick up in the future, when the need arises, will be the more expensive new ones.

Fog machines set off our smoke detectors as well, but they belonged to the bar. We just quit using them altogether.

I am REALLY curious as to why your fog machiens set off your smoke detectors?

I have tested mine by doing this: put it right next to the sensor and blast (with the room empty). Done this in about 7 venues and never had an issue.

Also, less is more, just a really fine localised mist in front of the lighting.

I've used mine in probably about 30 different venues now, and never had any issues.

Are different types of machine/sensor causing issues?

There is two differnt styles of smoke detectors,Ionization and photoelectric and or dual sensor alarms.

The Ionization detector activate quicker for a fast burning, flaming fire as the photoelectric detector activates best for a slow smoldering fire. Also they make dual detectors with one of each.

This may be the reason for the difference in results with the fog machines. :dontknow:

The fog setting off fire alarm is the reason why many DJs go the way of Haze rather than the Fog. Haze does not set alarm, party because it sits lower to the ground and doesn't rise up and the chemical composition doesn't set off alarm. I have thought about a bubble machine but I heard that leaves slippery floor and film on equipment. I think the best solution is the Haze machine. I may get one soon, if the damn economy ever improves.
