Hello Everyone! My name is Tam and I'm from the bay area. I'm looking to setup a little karaoke for the modest room I'm renting here in San Francisco. This forum looks to be a really great resource, and I hope to become a productive member of this community.

Be easy,
Tam

Thanks for the welcome Jay. I'm still awake perusing the forum for advice. I want to get a karaoke system just for myself, and friends if they decide to come over and hang out.

I really am intrigued by the new systems that rip the CD+G to a Hard Drive [I.e. U-best, CAVS]. I read somewhere that CAVS has one that can read from a portable hard drive which sounds pretty sweet too. Though I'm not totally sure if there is a CD+G ripper for Mac. Plus the Hard Drive systems seem to cost a quite a few hundred dollars, yikes!

It looks as if a lot of the KJ's are using PC setups. The only hang-up I have is that I have a Macbook and I haven't been able to find much information on using a Macbook for karaoke purposes. :\ [I do have the mini-dvi to dvi to HDMI so I can connect my Macbook to my LCD TV though.]

Is there any kind of sticky thread with FAQs for the newbie, or maybe a page with like a glossary? I'm curious to the different formats used for karaoke like DVD, MP3+G, etc.

Also, I noticed in a particular Thai bar I went to with some friends, they have the karaoke with the Music Video from the song. Is there a certain place to order from for those types of discs?

Not too sure what the best setup is yet but I'm making progress! If anyone has recommendations for a particular stand alone, or advice for a Mac user/home user, please let me know!

Tam

Thanks for the welcome eben. I found out through one of your older posts that I need to upgrade to Leopard to get BootCamp. I'm assuming I still need to source a copy of Windows XP? I'll definitely be PMing you.

Thanks!
Tam

It sounds like you are on the right track. Researching equipment to get exactly what you need for your specific needs is smart. A lot of people go the cheap route and end up rebuying everything. Take your time and make sure your buying quality equipment. :D
