My favorite karaoke venue bought a JB-xxx (199, maybe) preloaded with 17000 songs or so. They are all THM, DK, CAVS etc -- a lower grade type of material. I have figured out that the DK songs go from 10740 to 12355, so I can pick the best version they have if it is out on DK.
I have seen this same list of songs a number of places. I believe it comes with a "database", and I use the term extremely loosely, of the songs so that you can print a songbook. It is by far the worst songbook ever assembled, and I am hoping to make a better one for them.
Does anybody have this text file? I would take anything I can get, of course, but would love to have brands associated.
If you send it to me and request the processed list back, I will send you a file in the format of "Artist, The Song Title, A 00123, 01234, 12345 (DK)" or whatever you want.
(No talk about legaliity, please. They bought it from a vendor specifically because they wanted to be legal. Not my doing, so please don't touch on it.)

Obviously nobody here bought one of those. Doesn't surprise me, actually. Oh well....

True very true !
I honestly never even looked at the preloaded songs on the Cavs unit. First thing I did was erase them. Sorry I'm no help.

No problem -- there is a certain 17100 song file that was installed by CAVS for a while. All the DK, most THM and Country Hits Today, a lot of MM and Monster Hits. Pretty crappy, all in all, but it's what I have at my Sunday 7pm dinner place. They won't play disks, and won't buy any new music.
If it wasn't the only 7pm start with good food, I would stop going. At least if all our friends stopped going there...

Seems you may be the resident expert I need Babs. I bought the 203G CAVS unit (it actually arrived yesterday) for my personal use at home but without the pre-loaded hard drive. My fav local KJ was telling me that I should be able to get more Gb's for the dollar by buying from a third party, like at my local mega electronics super store, Fry's here in Houston. She has the hard drive that came pre-loaded with her commercial CAVS unit but wished she had bought third party herself afterwards. Hindsight kind of thing I think.
My question for you is that besides it having to be a USB drive what else should I be looking for in a HD for my new CAVS player. Brand name maybe, speed and any kind of special cabling for speed throughput or whatever else I should need. Any other tips would be helopful if you think of any off the top of your head regarding this setup. Currently I have about 5k+ CDG songs on discs and that number is growing weekly. I'd love to be able to put them on a hard drive accessed by my CAVS unit.
I hope you can help. Thanks.

Those "third party" hard drives are almost certainly illegal copies.
CAVS has a history of going to the very edge of legality (or beyond) in getting its hard drives full of low cost songs. Anyone that can undercut them price wise especially as well as quality wise is almost certainly not legit (for multi thousand song packs). I seriously doubt FRYs (or any major electronics store) would be able to sell such hard drives loaded with songs (unless they are in Chinese or some other foreign language) at anything like a reasonable price. The FRYs website does not have any such "bulk" karaoke for sale beyond the regular discount bin CD packs and magic Mics.
The problem is that all of the artists should be paid royalties on the songs they wrote, and that is a minimum of at least $0.25-$0.45 a song PER Copy sold.
In general unless it is a going out of business sale be very suspicious if you are paying less than $0.50 a song, and for major karoke brands like Soundchoice expect to pay even more on average. Sure you can find a used or overstock Karaoke Cd in the discount bin for $1-$2 with 15 songs but that is less than it cost to make, and it's initial wholesale price.

Newsinger was asking about putting his collection of CDGs on hard drive. I'd don't think he was looking for anything illegal.

Ok ill bite..I do have one of these cavs with the loaded music. i bought it used when I got into karaoke and only keep it as a simple backup . I do not have any such file that I know of, but I have no way of getting into the hard drive as I do not have the proper adaptor to connect to my PC. If you do manage to make such a database, I will surely be interested in buying a copy of the file as the books i have are poor, and i need new copys.

What I was referring to was she already had all her songs on discs in her library, well over 19k of them. She has had her unit for about 2-3 years now and the pre-loaded hard drive she ordered with her unit was pretty pricey (at that time) she was saying and she was willing to buy an unformatted hard drive and transfer all her songs over to the new drive.
As far as I know Fry's doesn't sell pre-loaded hard drives. I find myself in a similar situation that I currently have over 5k in songs with another 2785 on the way that I bought this afternoon. I certainly didn't mean to imply that Fty's sells pre-loaded drives and I do understand the piracy issue of which I personally eschew the practice as well.

I would be giving, not selling. Especially if you found me the file.
How did you get your songbooks? They must have been printed from *something*.

Actually you can find a text file on the CAVS machine that has all the songs in it. Shouldn't be hard to import that into other programs. I can't remember, where that text files is or what it is named, but I'm sure you can find it in the manual, which is downloadable at the CAVS website. It's been a while, sorry.

If I had access to the unit, I would do that. But they don't seem to want me to help.
We can do some more detective work and see if we can figure out other manufacturers, then I will try getting them to let me copy the file to a USB drive or something.

the problem I have is that I dont have the cable to connect mine to my PC. I bought it used and never did get the manual, tho i believe the prior owner still has it around. he never had the connector.
the books I have came with the unit. Ive had TWO of them stolen, and the others are getting beat up. new binders makes a nice face lift, but I really need new books. My partner keeps the cavs so i rarely see it.

First, you can download the manual at the CAVS website.
Second, you need to connect the CAVS to your network. (Hub, Network Cable). That's all you need. Well, and set the network up in the settings of the CAVS. (see manual)

I asked the daughter of the owner to look around and see if she can see an XLS or other file. I am going there tomorrow, so we will see what we see. She seems receptive -- I think she is sick of hearing how lousy the books are. You can have four listings for the same song:
[pre] ELVIS PRESLEY THE WONDER OF YOU
Elvis Presley Wonder of You, The
Presley, Elvis The Wonder of You
Presley, Elvis Wonder of You, The[/pre]
Or more if there are typos.

My unit has only the old printer style connection, but it is male and cords all seem to be also, or the other way around. as i understand it Cavs does have a connector to hook it up directly to a pc. I wanted to see if i can find an adaptor localy at the computer shop.

Supercharged, it sounds like to me that you actually have one of the old JB-99 units. These connect to a computer by a parallel port. You have to have a special cable with a male parallel connector on BOTH ends to get it to work. CAVS PROBABLY still sells this cable.
The CAVS JB-199 uses an ethernet cable to connect to a remote computer.

it is almost 4 years old now i think. it works well as a backup, but im running out of books. I think my partner lost another one last week...that or its sitting at the bar for him when he gets back on thursday.
I was aware that Cavs sells the cord. have to see if they have one with a usb otherwise i can only connect it to the kids or wifes pc.
