I've hosted maybe 10 times. A gal comes up to me while I'm hosting, and says one word:

"Unforgettable"

Obviously she's puting in a verbal request for the duet, so I get her name, and ask if she'll be doing this with her boyfriend

"No, my other friend is going to do it with me."

When her turn comes up, I start playing Cole and Cole "Unforgettable" and soon it becomes apparent that something is wrong. First of all, it's two girls (shrug... ok, whatever. maybe they're bi or just good friends)

But one of them knows the song BARELY and the other NOT AT ALL.

They stumbled thru it, with me singing the male part.

Talking to them later... found out they had never done karaoke. They didn't know about books and slips. I guess they assumed that every singer was doing a kamakaze / suicide ?

She wanted me to pick a song for her that was "unforgettable" !

LOL oops.

Guess I'll be explaining over the PA at least once a night "check out the song book, fill out a slip..."

Since you are not Psychic you made a good guess. That's exactly what I would have given her too.

LMAO Funny story.

I would have made them fill out a slip anyway. I have a horrible memory and would have never remembered their names to call them up to sing.

It's almost funny how newbies think they can just walk up and announce that they want to sing "whatever" and don't tell me their name or fill out a slip, and expect that I'll REMEMBER TO PUT THEM UP. Geesh! Really, all one has to do is look around, see books and slips on the tables, and see people walking up with slips, etc. Interesting to me that people can be so oblivious to their surroundings.

If you walked into a garage and saw mechanics under the hoods of cars and getting tools and parts, would you know how to rebuild an engine? :P Don't assume that the newbs are cognizant of what's going on. They would have to know what the books and slips are for. A polite informing of those tools are all that's needed. Like this..."I appreciate you wanting to try karaoke, but please use the books to find what you want to sing and then write that selection on the slips provided and we'll get you up as soon as we can".

Well it was definitely an "unforgettable" experience for me. A great way to learn that particular lesson!

I'm sure other people have funny / memorable stories from when they were a noobie host.

Here's one for ya Randy-

I have a triple tray player to play other peoples discs. I forgot to put a disc in the tray for the patron. So what happens? The player automatically switches to the next tray. The singer has mic in hand hand ready to sing and the audience is patiently waiting for the music to start when all of a sudden loud fart noises come barreling out of the speakers. I had an effects disc in the the next tray. LMAO

It depends on if they're my type or not and announce that the show has to end. LOL

I did two shows this past weekend, a bar and a wedding reception, but have run into this before too. Someone will bring up a slip, they don’t want to sing the song, they just want to hear it. I do my best to explain, politely, that - and with most of the songs in my book unless they sing it there isn’t going to be any vocals. They’ll also grab the DJ book, and want to sing a song that’s in there, and I have to explain everything in reverse.

I made a very obvious KJ goof last Thursday. A regular brought up a slip with One-Creed written on it. It's not a song he, or anyone, normally does.

So I pull up "One" and... this Broadway tune starts up. And you should have seen his expression... like... uh no way... and the intro with it's schmaltzy horns had everyone looking up at him... like... dude what are you doin'!?!

I have the Creed "One" so quickly apologized over the mic and set him up.

I didn't even know I had a Broadway "One". Amazing the stuff that tags along on CDGs. Gotta definitely mark it that way next time I'm in my database.

You know, when new people come up and assume I remember every little detail - I take that as a compliment - I mean, they think my brain is like some huge hard drive?

I just smile and say - this is how it works, cos although I'm good, I'm not that good!

Everyone get's their one mistake ;)

Karen K - I'm with you. I make plenty of announcements (avg. once every 20 minutes), and people still just come up and blurt out a song and run away. It's a little easier now that I use a laptop, if I can at least get their name. If not, I pick something about them I remember (keeping it CLEAN) to call them up. But there is always someone at every show who either (1) tells me flat out they don't want to look at the book/fill out the slip, or (2) looks through the book, doesn't find the obscure song they want, but fills out a slip for it anyway.

Such is life. I appreciate the 99.99% of patrons who have a clue.
