I'd be willing to bet that most of those cases involved alcohol or drug abuse.

I'd tend to agree - probably because drugs and drink are often depressives - either when used or after.

My sympathy goes out to all of you who have lost a a loved one in this way. The haunting question of why sometimes can never be answered. My daughter deals with manic depression and when she tried to commit suicide she said she was so miserable that she just didn't want to live anymore. She also thought that everyone would understand why.

The letters she left would make a grown man cry. Life is still a struggle for her, but now with medication is able to function.

I pulled one of mine unconscious out of the bathtub a few months ago. This one is doing much better today, currently receiving counseling at the local public mental health facility and on antidepressants. No alcohol or drugs were involved.

It saddens and amazes me reading this thread this morning and the turn it's taken. We KJs seem to have a disproportionate number of suicidal family members. I don't know what the connection would be.

Well said Bill. I think depression and suicide have always been prevalent. It's just not something you talk about very often publically. Treatment for depression has come a long way though. My daughter has a chemical imbalance and will take meds the rest of her life. Without meds and therapy I am 100% possitive she would not be with us today.

Depression... It is evil, it steals lives!

My father had a liver + kidney transplant a few years back, after being on dialisys for a few years. The operation had complications, and meant a long stay in intensive care. He now has anti-rejection drugs that have a side-effect of depression. It stole his entire personality.

Thank the lord he is now on another drug, and back to his self. I cried to sleep too many times seeing him like that!

Jamkaraoke, I sure hope that you meant this as a joke. I was appalled how callously you treated such subject matter; and using this for joke material is in extremely poor taste.

If you really meant this quote literally, than I hope to God that I never run into you. The comments made were so insensitive, that I have to restrain myself while typing this response. You would have to be one of the most callous people I know for making such a statement in light of such tragedy.

I truly feel with each one of you, who lost a family member to suicide. I experienced that, too. And even after more than 20 years, it still makes me think, wonder and sometimes cry.
