If I lived in a rural area like Keith lives in, or even an area that had safe roads (Keep in mind CT is known for the worst intersections and drivers in the nation and these are within 3 miles radius of where I live) I'd have a bike or two today. Two eldery women have been killed walking to the plaza across the street by cars (within 7 years) crossing a main road (this is a pedestrian walkway mind you) and marked as such- Clearly markings and signs of 25 mph as well as blinking yellow lights do not deter drivers determined to drive at 70 mph on the 25 mph area area with alot of brush. Last big court area accident where a biker was paralyzed by a car, while on the stand he yelled, "Of course the lighting worked and was on while I was riding my motorcycle.. The driver shot out've a dangerous intersection without looking or stopping first. What am I suppose to have on my bike, a christmas tree and floodlights ? I was driving straight and had the right of way on a main road respecting all laws"? It's the "driving" defensively that as you cites sometimes just doesn't assure you horrible drivers are not going to hurt you.. Fact is, there's also a lot of disrespect in this upperclass old money religious historical area for bikers to begin with... They are targeted as sources of trouble much of the time

The problem with "The crazies" is that they have nice metal suits of armor around them and have really big 2000 lb weapons they are sitting in... You are at a disadvantage either way... unless you can be certain after flying a few feet forward after impact you'll have a nice safe and soft landing place

I see to many kids on Crotch Rockets (death rockets) zipping in and out of traffic. I think there should be a higher age limit for a motorcycle license.
Of course there are idiots at any age, but teenagers think they are ten feet tall and bullet proof. When you ride a bike you need to have respect for the danger.
Now the other dumb thing I see is alcohol. I don't care who you are, driving a motorcycle after drinking is just stupid! I see it all the time at the bar I work.

Don't worry Kappy, when my day comes, I won't be riding my bike. I have a F-350, dually diesel, crew cab, with the super heavy off road bumpers, and brush guards. Yes sir, this WV boy will be prepared, and I won't even talk about about whats inside the cab, !

Right Bab's and Motorcycles often do not forgive the way cars do given the scenerio you mentioned regarding kids (feeling they are invincible with crotch rockets and moded Kawasaki and Suzuki racing bikes).. Especally the Kawasaki type racing models that are revised with those indentations in the gas tank for arms (racing bikes) where legs are elevated and forward...Looks like the balance would be horrible IMHO... the kids I know that get hurt don't have the standard upright posture larger heavy bikes... these are the makeshift chopped racing bikes often bought used, repainted (because they've been in wipe outs) that are quite inexpensive, frames usually been unprofessionally religned, and the balance is off, alignment is off, and they've got makeshift panels and other items to mess up their wind resistance etc, just not aerodynamically sound vehicles, but they are REAL LOUD ... I can see buying a nice Harley or Honda new (as you state, as a mature individual that realized what it means to have a motorcycle license), meaning, YOU AINT AS SAFE as you are in a large car, you don't have the respect as a kid weaving in and out've traffic on the road dancing around exuding arrogance.. and different rules now apply as a biker who must be aware that there are horrible drivers sharing the road with them, given the fact that MANY types of bikers are often viewed in crowded conditions as pains in the butt, and second class citizens assuming the bike is obviously cheap, noisy, and the rider is acting as though he's much "cooler" than the cars he shares the road with, subconsciously that also sets up a scenerio where the driver isn't going to go out've his way to yield to the aggressive rider on a bike, so factors weight heavily that the biker is at odds...
EVEN assuming they are great riders, if they aren't aware of those that aren't safe drivers sharing the road with them, they can easily die.. I good bike rider must be aware of the conditions that surround him often meaning leaves wet roads etc up here.. It's just not bike-friendly around here..

[quote="Babs @ Wed Sep 10, 2008 1:45 pm"]I see to many kids on Crotch Rockets (death rockets) zipping in and out of traffic. I think there should be a higher age limit for a motorcycle license.
I don't know what it's like in Chicago, but on the Wash area beltway, it is not unusual to see a pack of crotch rockets zoom by at 150 mph, or better on the way home at night. The police can't, or won't do anything about it. Somone sent me an e-mail a while back of a crotch rocket that hit the side of a car at over a 100 mph, the bike was embeded inside the car, and killed the driver of the car also. Now I hear the new Suzuki can do 198 mph right off the showroom floor! Way over 200 with mods. How would you like you teenage son or daughter to have one of those? Hey, I don't care what they sell, and maybe I'm getting to the geezing stage, but I'm just content to putt around on my Harley, and make some noise. Ron

I have a titanium Campy Mountain bike (bought it off a competitive mountain biker) that costs more than most of these kids bikes, and I'm scared xitless of riding any of my bicycles on the road (have a few Cannondale road and hybrid bikes too- all shimano XTR on the road... But still... Falling the wrong direction after hitting a rock is all it takes to die around here.. Makes me prefer to walk. *even so no sidewalks)
Not to mention just peddling in low gear up an incline tore my MCL last July...Two wheels requires awareness on the part of the rider... I think I'm best off with at least a vehicle on FOUR wheels. Reason being, I respect Bikes, and similarly I respect guns, and know I CAN NOT have either given my current make up, so both were sold responsibly to those I KNOW are much more suited to owner both.. Doesn't make me less of a man, makes me a wiser person.. Instead I buy guitars.. ..
A few rules hold true... Motorcycles don't get people killed, the riders do, guns don't kill unnecessarily but people that shouldn't have them can or might.. and liquor isn't what kills people, it just a means some that can't handle it use to expedite their own death.. Part of living is knowing OUR limitations, character, etc.
That MUST be known as soon as one get's their license for ANYTHING that has a dangerous side, meaning even a car *at 16*..

Couldn't agree more on the personal responsibility thing Kappy. My daughter now 16, has her learners permit, and naturally I worry some. I am trying to train her the best I can, and she will have drivers Ed, but there is no substitute for experience. I have read too many horror stories in the paper involving 16-17 year old drivers. Seems they do ok, until something unexpected gets thrown in the mix, like slick roadway, or someone pulling out in front of them, perhaps a dear. Then they just don't have the skills yet to overcome many times. Anyway, I'll breath easier when she gets a year or two behind her.
I am rambling, and burning up Babs thread here, so......it was nice chatting with you Kappy. BTW, you seem like a very nice fella even though you don't like chrome.

Thanks Vicki, but the pleasure was mine. I love to chat, and learn from people thats been around a little longer than I. Of course I can't keep up with Kappy, I'm good for a paragraph or so, then.....duh...
Actually, I can,t believe he was warned, and finally kicked off KS, but I'm glad they let him back in. As far as getting him out of his "shell" I think a cutie helping him with his chain would be far more effective. Maybe Ollie, could spare one outa his collection, thats good with her hands and stuff...... Ron

I was allowed back but I'm afraid to discuss the details because in lieu of what happened, it wasn't easy to get back here. Assuming I screw up one more time I'll be banned for good My own fault I admit, and own up to the fact that in this particular case, I got myself banned Nobodies fault but my own !

See, The mods are already showing up... This is what I mean.. I'm under VERY strict scutiny !!
Phill already explained to the room why I was banned. While I don't agree with the decision, these rooms aren't democracies.

Ok Kappy, heres one for you that you won't believe. We were talking about the kids being responsible and things to that effect. How about a driver, DRIVING the kids ?
Earlier this week, a local school bus got in the soft shoulder, swerved, and then lost control, plowing into the woods. Nine students out of 28 were sent to the hospital. Never guess what the driver was doing when that happened...TEXT MESSAGING !
That part hasn't been made public yet, but according to some students that were on the bus, thats what took place.

I wonder how the law will deal with that ? Naturally he'll be fired, but that aside, in his training that is an OBVIOUS No No

I keep them in a special point repository a few floors beneath the Singers Forum.
Anybody that wants points is welcome to them.. I have around 25 million.. Problem is, they don't do me much good if I can't purchase my "Currently Banned" heading back

I had tried it several times, but with my eyesight, I was all over the road. Finally I said to myself, better not try that anymore. My kids on the other hand, can do it at the speed of light while carrying on a conversation.
