Quote: = LISTEN FOR YOUR NAME – If a singer leaves and we call their name, the request will be placed at the bottom of the rotation. Going out to smoke? Please check with your host first.
Why?
If somebody is in the bathroom, on cell phone or smoking we call up the next singer then put the previous singer next. They appreciate this and after awhile expect it. With our high paced show we can not wait for ambling singers. If they dont respond in a few seconds they are bumped one turn. It works Try It..
This is for certain crowds Other times we might be playing 30 seconds of filler music and line dance.
This is for certain crowds Other times we might be playing 30 seconds of filler music and line dance. I break every rule in the book and have a very successful show..
Present gig is $175 and soon will be $200..

That sounds reasonable to me.
I don’t think I could tell someone who was out for a moment that they have to go to the bottom of the rotation.
It just doesn’t seem necessary or reasonable to me.

Me neither. I simply cannot penalize someone who has been waiting to sing for 1/2 to 1 hour because they are using the bathroom when their turn finally comes up.
The following singer is up and they are next.

You could put the rules somewhere in the middle of your book as well as the front.
Maybe put them alphabetically before Rupaul.

As has been said, sometimes the "rules" are there just to give you something to "point to" but not always strictly enforced. But I also have a fast-paced show and it's not uncommon for me to have over 20 singers in the queue. I gotta keep things moving! If someone doesn't respond when I call their name, I don't automatically put them next. And actually I don't move them to the bottom of the rotation either. What I actually do is take them OUT of the rotation until they come up and ask when they're coming up or let me know they're back in the house. When they do, I put them up next.
Most singers will first check with me before they go out to smoke as to where they are in the rotation. Just like considerate singers will come up to let me know they have to leave and to take them out of the rotation.
If they've left for the night or ate a bad burrito and they're in the bathroom for awhile, I don't want to be calling their name over an over again.

I don't like to have rules and we don't really need them but feel they should be there for the 1 in 1000 that is an jerk. I do try to keep it light-hearted though and call them guidelines.
One rule is: 1.Behave yourself. Please don't jeer, heckle, or otherwise interupt the singer (unless it's Wally).
Another reads: Please wait to be invited to sing with someone else (unless it's Jake).

I agree with ya Dan.
We get so BUSY sometimes, i DON"T WANT to waste everyone elses time calling somebody's name over and over again.
It slows down the ebb and flow of the show. I wait for them to approach me later and i write on the slip 'no-show' the time i called them.
I frequently tell new singers to 'stick around' and try to let them know how many songs are ahead of them when they turn in a slip.

Tip: Besides putting your "RULES PAGE" in the front and the BACK of your books....put a few inside the book so as people are looking for something they are sure to come across the RULES once or twice !

Tip #2, put a little check box on your karaoke slips that the singer has to check to acknowledge that he/she has read the rules and will comply with them. If it's blank, don't let them sing. Then, in fine print on the bottom you could put....violators of any and all rules will be shot!

When a situation arises and I have problem or a whiner I do not argue with them in private It is on the mic where everybody in the bar knows whats going on. I do not have many rules but I do run a very professional tight knitt show. I have actually shut the music down in the middle of a song and made announcements. The mic is the best enforcer you have..

If someone is in the bathroom, i'll just call the next singer & get the other back up within the next song or two. It's not their fault they had to go when they did. And since one of a kj's biggest peeve is the question "When Am I UP", I wouldn't expect a "Well they should know where they are at in the round" if they aren't suppose to ask, then they aren't going to know.
Not saying you are one of the ones that have this peeve, but others have said this before. Just seems funny that they don't like being asked by a singer when theyr are up, but get upset at the singer if they are not there because they had to go to the bathroom. Just move on to the next singer & get the other back up later.

I agree and think that rules should be posted in the books that way if someone has a problem you can say, "Hey my rules are posted in many places in the books."

Same here: If I call a name and they aren't there. I say going once, twice, gone. Then I may say," If any one sees them let me know". I will put them in as soon as they return.
I can't penalize someone for being absent the way our bar is set up. Bathroom, porch and beer garden are all interferences. Usually someone will yell from the crowd that they are outside ect... and I will just put up the next singer until they return. It doesn't happen that often, but maybe once a night so it isn't a big deal.
Like Lon said I really don't want people constantly asking when they are up next so they don't miss their turn.

With CompuHost and its scrolling rotation at the bottom (I have the next four singers) I can't remember the last time I had someone not show up.

As i mentioned calling them "over and over again".
Sure i'll call their name and give them the benefit of the doubt either smoking or taking a bathroom break, but i will wait a couple of songs to call them ONCE more.
That's being very fair- i just won't keep calling them and slowing the pace of the show past one courtesy if it were a busy night.
I make it a point to always call out the next 3-5 singers in advance so they know when they're up. It works for me pretty well as i still use songslips.

Yeah absolutely you can't pander and wait around. Dead air is death! It's like watching a news show where the anchor isn't sure what to do next. You know how that makes you squirm in your seat? That's what your room is doing if you're up there fumbling around.
I've got a great room. Almost always if someone isn't right up I'll get a yell. Common yells:
"She's in the bathroom!"
"She's out in the Garden Room with her boyfriend!"
"He left!"
.... and on we go.
I had a newbie last Thurs. I called her up and she still sat there, reached for her purse, and started putting on lipstick! I started her track anyway and boy did she move! But I was ready with the next singer if she didn't.
Next round she was more punctual.

I find it amazing how often people are indisposed when it is their turn to sing next. If "Tom" has been singing right after "Rich" all night; why does Tom have to go outside for a cigarette or run to the john for a pee in the middle of Rich's song????? The same people always seem to be the ones that need to be repeatedly called up to the stage. It's almost as if they think they need to make some sort of grand entrance. I guess I'd have a rule that said if you weren't ready to come on stage when your name was called you would be dropped back 5 spots in the rotation and 10 spots back if it happened again. I'd make an allowance if it was their first time singing that night because they wouldn't have an idea of who they sang after.

All GOOD points and very true Bruce.
However on the flip side, a lot of singers go to the restroom for the vanity of it; makin sure the hair is right, no visable boogers, to clear their throat, show more cleavage, etc...
What cracks me up is when they end up draggin toilet paper on the stage with them despite the vain attempts to look their best -priceless!
