What's the most difficult song you sing or wish you could sing?

I've listened to The Temptations - I Wish It would Rain over and over and I wonder if I will ever be able to sing it. I love the song and I would be so happy and proud if I could ever sing it decently. There are some others, but I can't think of them right now . . .

Mariah Carey-Emotions.
I have (just barely) enough ability in the 6th octave to 'cheat' passable 'whistle note' substitutes on most Mariah tunes, but the jump from semi-powerful lower note melisma-fest to flageolet register where she sings' I like the way it feels...inSIIII((( )))IIIIDE) is something I can't manage no matter how hard I tried(and irritated my poor husband and dog in the process....and probably the neighborhood cat population, too).
I finally admitted defeat .No song is worth damaging your voice over, right? No big deal. Its not that great a song anyway...yeah...that's it... 8)

for me the song I most want to sing that is in the too hard basket is Heart's Magic Man...whenever I hear that songs opening riff I swear its almost as good as sex...but I simply cannot do justice to the song

I've just started singing Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know". Although my range is high, there are a couple of lines which force me to go falsetto. Which sounds lousy.

I love the song though and will probably give it a try taking it down 1 or 2 steps.

Biggest Part of Me by Ambrosia is difficult. I Just Want to Be Your Everything by Andy Gibb always leaves me scarred and scared. ;) How about the final "Who I Am" in Supertramp's Logical Song? Most of the Beach Boys songs...

I've tried singing Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen and it never sounds good. I like singing Bob Seger, but it's hard to imitate the master! Sometimes you have to rely on the fact that the crowd has had a drink or two....I know I must sound better after that!

Tal Bachman's She's So High. Took me a long time to nail that one. A simple melody, but a wicked octave change. I'm older and the youngn's sat up and took notice when I finally did it.

Had a male singer come in and sing "Beautiful" by James Blunt- He nailed it but very few can nail it - talk about special equipment required on the lower regions for most men to sing it convincingly!

Most difficult I have sung, and the one that still gets a lot of attention even today when it is an ancient song by most standards, is "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" by Celine Dion.

Second most difficult is "Crazy On You" - it has to be done completely (even the high parts) in chest voice to be convincing and Ann Wilson doesn't ever sing anything in her head voice (All Hail Ann Wilson, Queen of Female Vocalists)...and of course Barracuda closely follows that one.

For those familiar with Nightwish, their original female lead had an amazing almost operatic range that makes their songs difficult to produce - but I've never heard anyone else sing Nightwish anywhere but our show.

Hey Karen, I sing nightwish :D and i've had one bar man, beg to join in with me because he loved the song so much.

The song, I'd love to do. . . but just can't figure out a suitable way to sing it or perform it, as a girl, is "Darlin' Nikki" - Prince.

I personally think the "auctioneers song" - Leroy Van Dyke is one of the most difficult songs to do, nearly everyone is capable of it, but it involves a lot of pratice.

Considering the biggest song of the summer was "I Kissed a Girl" by Katy Perry, I'd say the world can handle a female singing "Darling Nikki". If you like the song then it's suitable for singing at karaoke. And you'll probably turn on a few guys in the audience anyway.

For me one of the more difficult songs to learn was "Waiting On The World To Change - John Mayer". It was not so much the range, but the way he sings the song. Doesn't really follow a clear concept to the melody. After endless repeats and annoying the $hit out of my roommate (LMAO) I'm able to do the song to the T. I'm not really a huge John Mayer fan, but one of my regulars mentioned, I would have the perfect voice for John Mayer songs... Next one I want to learn is "Your Body Is A Wonderland" and the Live version of Free Fallin' (awesome cover of Tom Petty). No Karaoke Version of that version, yet.

Another hard one to learn was "Seven - Prince". I nail that song now too and get requests for it over and over again. Meanwhile I can't hear that song anymore. lol
But for some reason, everybody loves that song. Even the older crowd (Good old Franky crowd) requests that song every once in a while.

My GF sings two songs really well with other guys:

Robbie & Kylie - Kids
Bryan Adams & Mel C - When You're Gone

I just find these songs 100% incompatible with me :(

My fear is more the growling and screaming, vocally i'm much more suited to happy pop..... That and the song performance wise needs someone to "Grind" their hips onto stage, for the full prince effect.

I just feel if you're going to sing a song that can be thought of as "risque", you had better pull it off.

I suspect alcohol may be the answer. The challenge of singing Mika's "Grace Kelly", was solved by going out socially to karaoke, making it look like i was tipsy, and then singing it alongside some happy yet out of time dancing. People always respond more to a fun, and not so brilliant performance, than ever they do to a perfect number.

I think I mentioned this some time agon...

I really enjoy Sting's "Fortress Around Your Heart", but it's hard for ME to find a key to sing it in, as in the song, Sting backs his own voice three or four times in different keys...

I've tried and tried on this one, and finally gave it up!

This is an interesting topic.

I just started singing three years ago, shortly before arriving at this forum. I have watched as the walls have tumbled over the past few years. Songs I considered too difficult no longer are, and songs that I thought I did a decent job on I know now I was pretty poor at.

There are several Glen Campbell songs that have eluded me over the past three years. Not always because I can't hit the notes, but because they are songs that require a certain character that makes the song ring true. One is Wichita Lineman. No particular note is difficult to hit, but the transitions between notes and the long phrases have made it extremely hard for me to perform consistently. I have received good reaction the two or three times I sang it in public, perhaps because it is so rarely done. But I still have known how far I have to go with it.

I now do Rhinestone Cowboy, which is an interesting song because it has a dual tessitura. Part of the song lives low, down in deep baritone land, while the chorus lives up high. It requires a bigger range than most songs for men.

And then there is Galveston. I imagine it is difficult for Glen himself to hit that "money note" every single night!

I have very rarely heard any of those songs done by others -- probably Rhinestone Cowboy a few times.

"No Rain" by Blind Melon- i gave up on singing it exactly as the lead singer does - it's just too difficult to nail the highs.

However, I can duplicate most Earth Wind & Fire songs, except "Reasons" perfectly, and a few Stevie Wonder songs, BUT a few of Stevie's songs are dang near impossible to re-create!

I practice BIGTIME at home before ever attempting any new song with those kind of vocal ranges. I don't want people leaving in droves!

Two songs I only do if the stars are in perfect alignment and I haven't sung a thing all week and I feel really at the top and like I can pull it off:

Makes Me Wonder - Maroon 5
Fix You - Coldplay

.......and No Rain would be right up there in the top 5. But I love that song. Amazing how many people know it and sing the oh-oh-oh-ohs with you. One of those songs that puts a smile on everyone's face.

I have to take songs with no key change because I have perfect pitch and it throws me off to do so. So boy my voice has got to be totally rested if I'm going to do anything this high.

A friend of mine sings "No Rain - Blind Melon" and I swear, he sounds just like the original. He gets a lot of compliments for it also.

Ain't No Other Man by Christina Aguilera

This is a tough one - I love the song, but with all her very distinct adlibs it is horrible to try and imitate.
