I agree that an appropriately-powered mixer and two efficient 15” speakers can do a karaoke gig. I have both types of PA, but use the mentioned system almost always.

I would not skimp on the mixer, though; we’re talking preamps, mixer, compression, effects, EQs and amps…

packaged in one box it’s a hellava deal, so don’t get something that might leave your show dead in the water. It’s not worth the savings.

I love the new Yamahas with the compression; I have the older unit without the compression, and wish I had it. Mine is the 400/400 watt whereas the new one is 500/500, and I trust Yamaha’s ratings and quality.

One thing one might consider about the box-style units…

I much prefer sliders, but the box unit does seem to protect the mixer surface from any vertical spills, dust, whatever gravity might bring.

What I also really like is that gives me a shelf on which to put stuff, maybe a lamp or whatever; it’s usable space. Newer ones are designed such that they can tilt back, but I honestly wouldn’t like that feature; I like that little shelf mine affords me.

Ive been playing for 25 years of bad sounding pa stuff, and peavey was the biggest piece of junk I ever seen ?????? none of them would hold up under heavey use, there speakers ar no good, did better with some cheap kustom 18's but it 's not the equipment, its knowing how to use it , dont go by the sales bs crap, learn how to mix, and use what you got first, so you have an under standing of how this stuff work's or get a good sound man that can still hear ......., there is a lot of good new stuff out there that really takes less work, but it cost !!!!!!!!!!!! ranger

the first mixer/amp I had was a peavey xr684...well still have it...I use it as a 2nd rig if we are doing stuff like barn dances up dusty shingle roads (which we get booked for sometimes) cos I dont mind undoing the grill on passive speakers and vacuuming them out...but I would hate to have to try that with active speakers

Yamaha PAS300 works for small rooms, powered mixer and matched speakers in one package..

I found the specs for the Mackie at http://www.mackie.com/products/ppm1012/ ... 012_SS.pdf

it states that the 2x800W is Peak at 4 ohms. WRMS is 2x500W at 4ohms. 8 ohms at 2x250.

Right even it's not powerful enough to properly power most of todays speakers. The average speaker requires anywhere from 400-500 watts program power at 8 ohms.

The Yamaha EMX5014C states 2x320W at 8 ohms.

I'm willing to bet it's 'average' or continuous power rating is a little lower, if you look at the spec again it states that's it's 'maximum' output power, could be a misleading peak power rating, however I don't think Yamaha is that unscrupulous. So chances are that's what it is capable of. Still a little low however for most speakers to run them to their full potential sound wise.

so....Does Yamaha make a NON powered version of this mixer?? I really do not need the power amp, and would rather not spend the money and lugg the extra weight around. The mackie would be enough power, but the Yamaha has way more toys built in the mixer. My worry with either of these mixers is letting my help run them. Ive got an 808s and a 406M currently. I like the simplicity of operation for those with less knowledge.
