I'm assuming most karaoke is done from a stage or similar "get up in front of everyone" method.

Poll: does your venue embrace singing from the singer's table?

If it is mixed at your venue, what percentage of the singers go to stage vs. stay at their table?

P.S. I heard that karaoke in Hawaii is mostly from the table, no stage. True??

I would say 90% of my singers come up to our dance floor stage, while only 10% of singers (mostly new or shy singers) sing from their seats.

Living in hawaii, i would say that about 1/2 of the karaoke venues have sit-down karaoke and usually allow 2 songs in a row. These places are mostly diners, smaller restaurants, bar-only places, and of course, the karaoke room you rent by the hour.

My venues are medium sized restaurants/bars with decent sized dance floors and i definately bring my "mainland experience" of 12 years here.

One of my shows i rock with karaoke. dancing, music videos, limbo contests and giveaways. It is GEARED for the younger touristy crowds and is a late show- 11pm-345am.

The other show is the opposite- it's a 9pm-1am and only includes karaoke and occasional filler music. The crowds are of the, uh...mature type. 45+. It also has a nice dance floor that is reserved for karaoke-dancing.

I'm fortunate and humbled to get the "best of both worlds" with karaoke.

I'd say most people want to be on the stage. I have a dear friend who is wheelchair-bound and she sings from wherever she can get her chair. Very few people are satisfied to sing from their chairs. On the other hand, there are bartenders who wear headset mics and sing from behind the bar - kind of fun.

All our singers sing from the stage, the ONLY exceptions are those in wheelchairs or handicapped in a way they can't get up to the stage easily then I will bring a wireless down to them.
Have thought about doing a sing from your seat night, but it's still only a thought!

I don't like the sing from your seat dynamic, so I instituted an extra package charge if we are to have wireless mics. At my service club, we only have wireless, and we have no stage. I would say about a third sit down and 2/3 stand up.

Now that Lonman mentioned it, I can accommodate handicapped with a long mic cord on the duet mic. Not that I think the venue is wheelchair-accessible....

What - actually sitting?

Why would someone NOT want to come to stage?

Sorry - never seen this before.

There are a very few that don't sing because they have to go up to a stage, it's not alot.

I have wondered about this. I usually go to a show in a small bar where the KJ is setup right across the walkway from where I sit. By mid evening this place is packed wall to wall and if I am alone and get up to sing my seat is always taken. The bartender is great about clearing out the person that took the seat, but I have found it is just as easy to reach over and grab a wireless from the KJ and sing in place at the bar as he also has the words up on screens over the bar as well as on his small stage. Figured since he gives me the mic he must not mind this.

If your KJ freely gives you the mic at your seat it's OK with him and don't worry about it.

We all face our own specific logistical issues in our rooms. In mine if people sang from their tables, it would slow things down and cut back the number of singers I could get through in an hour. One of the reasons I don't provide a wireless.

But the reason most singers prefer a stage is because they want to put themselves on display for a few minutes as much as sing. That's why most of the KJs have been saying that their singers like a stage.

we went to watch karaoke and i set it up with the KJ to suprise her with the
mic at the table. i didnt think she would do it though, we did i got you babe
by sonny and cher. so we sat in our chairs and made it though the song.
we sounded like a couple cats fighting though. :]

Everyone sings from the stage. You actually can sing from the front 2 tables if you wanted to, but I can only think of one gal who has done this because she had a broken foot. My venue is setup a bit different than most. There is a stage with 2 very long custom made bar tables. People can sit on either side or stand at them. It's a neat idea because you really feel you are on stage performing for an audience.

We have a high bar stool that is on stage and available if they want to "sit and sing." The only singing from out in the audience, is where a singer might step off the stage and "work" the crowd.

Here in hawaii we naturally have a high number of tourists (50-75k per day!) visiting and a few opt for the comfort of their seats to sing a song. We have large screen tvs so you can see the words from anywhere in the restaurant.

Of course MOST people want to and do sing from the stage/dance floor area where they can be seen under the dj lights and spotlights. Being on vacation they usually shoot video of their friends singing.

But the ocassional SHY or "unsure of their singing skills" newbies, barflys, OR a visiting celebrity (which we get quite a few), opt to remain at their seats with their group and just belt out a song. They don't crave the attention- they just want to sing.

Giving EVERYONE an option to feel their most comfortable is what i try to provide.

And, oh yeah, when we do a crowd-participation song at the start of the show to HOOK new singers, passing out the 5 wireless mics gets everyone involved, and it's not long til the song slips start pouring in.

Singing from a 'stage' is an exception rather than the rule here. Over here the mic is pass from table to table, and singers mostly sing either seated or standing near his table.
The only time you see people singing away from the table are when that singer is also dancing o the dance floor.

See, to me - people want to show off, stand on stage and sing. Plus singing while sitting down is a skill that is greater than singing while standing - less diaphragm control.

I always want to have a monitor speaker. I feel that it makes all the difference in the world to be able to hear yourself as you sing. Hearing yourself in the mains is not the same thing. You need a stage area for a monitor speaker.

I think singers perform better when no one is near them talking, and people aren't walking back and forth in front of them. Oops, now we're getting into last years "stage" thread.

I have one of my singers who frequents my shows and always puts in a plug for a monitor speaker. I do have one and have even tried a few times at the places he's shown up at. It's been more trouble than it's worth. There is just NO room, we have no stage or no real area to set up, we're crammed in a corner or up against a side wall....usually fighting for a dance floor and keeping the people from setting drinks on my table or knocking into it. It's part of the pleasure of working in LITTLE places....MrD

Try the Galaxy Hotspot. You can clip those puppies on a mic stand, sit 'em on a shelf, hang them from the ceiling. No real space necessary, and they don't cost all that much.

The only time I've gone without a monitor is when there was no room. In that case I try to setup, so the speakers are behind the singers or on the other side of the room facing the singers. It's for me as much as them.

I've only had a handful of people over the years who wanted to sing at their table. Usually this happens when a "friend" throws a slip in for them. After some convincing and urging on by the crowd, when I suggest they sing from their table where it's "safe", they are usually inclined to do it.

I can't imagine an ENTIRE NIGHT like that, though. We get a pretty lively crowd, so listening to a phantom singer with nothing but words to look at probably wouldn't work too well for us.
