Kicking around the idea of just having a SIGN UP sheet piece of paper or PAD instead if individual slips ...PROS CONS?

I would request that singers list a song and then list their next song when called up to sing or anytime after ???? THOUGHTS ?

Looks like a good idea it would save a lot of time with computer base. turning in a slip every rotation gets hectic. and you could have a back up if a singer complains about their spot. my 2cents Dave

thats what I use works well for me . no little slips of paper to lose

I dislike sign-up sheets because they disappear, or some people seem to think they ought to hover over them endlessly while deciding. Also, it sets up expectations about when you are going to sing -- you have them say, "Hey, I was after so-and-so on the sheet!"

For a rotation-based setup like CompuHost, slips and verbal are best IMHO. I will often ask the singer what their next song is as they come up for one, or after they finish. Or tell them, "come talk to me".

I have seen one venue use a marlite board with Name:___________ Song #__________ and it was taped in sectons. They had a lot of room though. As I remember, they had two spots for song numbers and rotated back and forth with them.

I really dislike the "list" idea, because it puts ideas in singers minds that it in some way reflects rotation. This is not necessarily true.

Use a computer for rotation. It is so much easier.

The one time I was at a place that used a signup sheet they did use it as the rotation. People would sign up for 3 or 4 songs at a time, put themselves about every 5 or 6 songs. I never went back and it's within walking distance of my house.

Give me 4 songs and go party!!! If you want to change a song we can do it on a dime..

(Turning on a dime is an old western saying about cutting horses [separating cattle} A good horse can stop at full speed and turn on a dime)

It is interesting to note you are still in that bring one sing one mode even with a sheet.

This sing one bring one drives me bozo whether at my gig or another I'm to busy talking tryin to get laid and partying to worry about flippin slips every time I sing. For awhile I just told them Put something up I dont care what it is If you are that serious then I feel for you.

I have never seen a sign up sheet used before. I tend to agree with Mcky though. I picture people hovering over it while deciding while others have to wait and people coming to their own conclusions of how the rotation should look because they have the sheet to look at.

I think it depends a lot on your particular venue though. You can always try it and see how it works out. I'd afix it to something so it doesn't disappear.

Another thought: I would think you'd need to look at it also while you're doing your show to pull up the next singer. If people are in line signing up that may be a potential problem also.

Can you explain more in detail how you plan on implimenting it? I've just never seen one used.

I don't allow multiple songs simply because I am not going to guarantee anything under the top song to be YOUR song for the night - then getting the ultimate whine - hey I already had that song up! YEAH in your stack of 10, if you wanted it first, you should have put it first.
Even with the 4 song per slip, what do you tell people, well no so & so has that song already, even though they MIGHT not be able to sing it as it's later on the list. Or repeats of songs no big in your club. Once a song is done, it won't be heard again in a night for me.
I prefer slips over the sheet personally.

I prefer when people give me more than one song request. If more than one person picks the same song I just let them know. That can happen when they give you one slip at a time also. I actually don't mind the same song sung twice a night as long as they are spanned a few hours apart. Some of my shows are 6 hours long. If someone sings the song in the beginning of the night and another person wants to sing it 5 hours later I don't think it is disturbing. Most people when told that the song has already been sung don't want to sing it anyway.

The way my rotation is set up it is much easier to take multiple slips than to be bother with one at a time, but I can see how it would be bothersome to others. Many many KJs will only take one slip at a time. I find that with newbies coming in. They are conditioned to do it this way and are surprised that I don't mind. One way isn't better than another. It is just what you are setup to do in your particular venue.

I prefer the slips. After having gone a rotation or two I begin sticking newbies in between those who have already sung; so the sign up sheet wouldn't do as well for me.

I also don't mind multiple slips. I keep an alphabetized box that holds my regulars slips. use those black spring clips.

If a song gets sung that someone else was going to sing I automatically go to their next song.

Oh I know it can happen with one slip at a time, but it's easy to track instead of having to worry about if this person had put it in their stack tonight or did this one.
The primary reason I quit allowing a duplicate song in an evening is the "I Can Do This Better" attitude that they just want to show up the other person. Well if they want to show them up, they will have to get the song up earlier on another night.
On the VERY rare occasion I do allow a repeat is ONLY if it's been 3-4 hours after it was sung & if the other person who sung it earlier is gone.
Plus we had a poll & the majority ruled that they would rather not hear songs done over in a night.



I could take multiple slips & am set up to do so, just prefer not to for reasons stated above.

Minor Hijack - Karyoker, have you ever ridden a cutting horse? WOOHOO! Talk about fun. I also owned a heeler (the back half of the roping team for those not into horses) - you'd darned well better be hanging on if you asked him to move out.

I'm sorry Lon I didn't mean it to sound like you weren't capable of handling more than one slip handed in at a time because of the way you are setup.

What I meant to say was it is just as easy for me to accomodate one slip as 10. I don't have patrons arguing from it and the way I keep track of singers slips it makes it easier for me just to take all of them at once.

I prefer to have more than one, but I will limit the number to 3 at the most and if we get through them I will ask for more. I've never had to ask for more, tho .

And I once owned an old cutting horse. She was AWESOME!
The most fun out of all the horses I ever had by far.
The way she moved was amazing when she got into "cutting mode". She came close to dumping me on more than one occassion but I always managed to stay on. (Barely)

I don't mind more than one from singers, and actually kind of like it because that way I can really look things over for a broad view. I understand the confusion over who gets to sing a certain song though because I've had that happen too. I just say it's what's on top that counts.

Nothing would have helped last night though. I'm just sick about it because it involved one of my absolute favorites in the room. It was all over "Hot N Cold" and I knew there was going to be a problem with that song because so many of the ladies were anticipating me getting it. I just got it in.

I use slips without any problem, and it hase another plus. I can SEE who's handing them to me. A sign up sheet could have multi entries by the same person under different names. We all know those jerks exist.

As for the above: I also keep a small lined pad handy. As a rotation is being established, I write just the names on the slip. Thereafter I put a tally mark after each name as they sing. There is always proof of how many times anyone has been up.

I have been playing at the same establishment for 3 yrs and have developed my regulars. They hand me all the tickets that they want to sing for the night in the order they are stacked. They are aware that they won't get to sing them all but put the ones that they want to sing on top. I also write down the singers on a pad and singers are added to the list as they bring me up there tickets. They will keep there spot in rotation as long as they have tickets turned in. That way they know who there following in rotation and really never have the problem of someone complaining that i skipped them.
