Master....

APPARENTLY, you had your "tongue in cheek" when you selected the title for the subject of this thread.

I wonder what responses you would have gotten if you asked your critic some of the following questions:
- Why aren't you hosting now?
- Are you suggesting that a host who lets guests select whatever they want to sing from the show's song catalog is a bad host?
- Was "Unchained Melody" in his catalog? (It is an extremely popular song at karaoke-IMHO)
- What did you do when someone requested "that" song or any other song you didn't approve of?
- What qualities make for a good host and is not playing a requested song one of them?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am curious what is so significant about "Killing Me Softly" as compared to any other slow song that is commonly sung at karaoke shows?

I think the aaarg response to Killing Me Softly is partly because it is a long slow song that is dated. If it it is done every night by the same person it can get old. The newer versions are more up beat, so I try to steer people that route because it gets a better response, but who cares really. It's karaoke, sing what you want.

After this guy said he was a KJ at one time I'd say something like. Well then you should know that as a KJ you can't enforce your personally likes and dislikes on singers or you'd be alienating certain people which would decrease your crowd. Everyone likes different genres and as it may not be pleasing to him, it maybe to others. Why would you want to make anyone feel unwanted. Seems bad for business to me.

The difference between Fugee's and Flack's "Killing" is night and day as karaoke material. The minimalist backing track to the Fugee's version exposes the vocals more and encourages the room to sing along. And the beat gets the room swaying. That's been my experience too Babs.

There have been threads about over done songs that you wish you could remove from your book and I think most would agree that Unchained melody does NOT belong on that list. The funny thing is a really really good singer can take one of those over done songs and still make people sit up and take notice.

We used to have a guy named Joe come in and he could Sing Robert Plant better than Robert Plant himself could sing now. He would do Stairway to Heaven and he had it down pat, I mean the range, all the little nuances of the song. I probably have heard Stairway a million times on FM radio and with an average singer it would still be somewhat tolerable, but it was a joy to hear this guy nail the song. Oh well, takes all kinds I guess. Rudy.

Opinions are like assholes - everyone has one. Just a shame that this loser was totally wrong.

1) It's a GREAT song
2) It's not your job to tell people what to sing (or not)
3) People have songs they want to sing

4) He's an EX host!

That guy sounds like a real idiot to me... sounds like he could be a lil' jealous too of you being a KJ & he isn't anymore as well as the person that sang Unchained Melody... just do what I do in life & ignore people like that, their just a waste of precious time.

As a DJ "Unchained Melody" fills the dance floor with a wide range of ages. (Remember the song's 1990 popularity when it was in the movie "Ghost"?) If someone can't sit through aq 3 minute song from anyone, why are they coming to watch karaoke? Part of being in a karaoke audience is to be courteous and encouraging of every singer.

I'm not a huge fan of ballads, but it totally depends on the crowd. The other night it was rainy and our crowd was lighter than usual which gave me courage to sing two kind of "quiet" songs: "I'd Love You To Want Me" by Lobo and "This Guy's In Love With You" by Herb Alpert. (Nailed 'em both!)

As for other current or former hosts who want to tell me how to do MY show? If it has to do with their mix or how they want to sing their SONG, I'm listening. Other than that, STFU! Whenever I'm at another show, I respect how the host does their gig. As long as they're not putting up 10 friends ahead of me, that is :D

This Guy's In Love With You - Great song, adore it, and REALLY love the Faith No More cover.

And yeah, if someone has ideas, criticisms, etc - fine.

Acting like a dick fulfills none of the above!

We're giving this *way* too much thought. The guy just didn't like the song so he decided to be a jerk about it to the KJ. Simple as that.

The DVD is called " Faith No More Live at Brixton Academy " it's a 2 disc set and has the This Guys in Love with You video on the second disc. Which actually might be the only version of that song available, I could be wrong, I'll have to check on that.

I started a joke by the Bee Gees is also a good cover that's on there also. Sorry for the derail. Rudy.

Got that cover too - but never seen the live DVD.

"I started a joke" was their final single!
