This Cheap Trick classic has become one of my regular's songs. I originally only had a mediocre version of it in my SGB set. I bought an SC disc but it isn't much better.

Both are practically nothing but mids, probably faithful to the original in that regard, but sound particularly bad next to other tracks during the night. I have a top mount 9 band that I ride to EQ tracks for problems like this, but there isn't any bottom or top in either of these versions to pull out.

Any of you folks found something better? Would prefer a "crowdless" version. Thanks-

This is one SC could have done better on, but have never had a problem making it sound good with a little tweak in the low eq.
Not that you will find it, but Pioneer has a very good version of it. I know it was out on DK as well among a handful of other brands, most now defunct as well. It was on a Legends & All Hits (most likely the same as the SGB).

that Pioneer version was the best one I ever heard!

If you can still find it in a DVD, I'd go for it that way!

The DK version sounds good to me. It is available online at karaoke-singles.com.

As a download DK is certainly cheap enough, so I'll do that now and keep an eye out for Pioneer used later. I've got this sheet of discontinued things to be on the lookout for.

The Pioneer CDG is Number 19, Track 18. I just checked on doowop.com, and they didn't have it (they used to carry a lot of the Pioneer CDGs that are all discontinued). Maybe you can find this one on e-bay.

I like the DK version as well, but if you can find one, the Top Tunes version was preferred by most of my singers...

So what you're saying is that most of your singers prefer the Dwight Yokum version of this particular song, and the person looking for a Cheap trick version will be so amazed by the Dwight Yokum track that he will no longer ever want to sing a Cheap trick version. I find both possibilities to be very unlikely. I took a listen to the Top Tunes track and it sounds nothing like the Cheap trick version. I don't recall Cheap trick having a slide guitar player in their band.

I've never heard the U-best version, but an old friend in Oregon had many of them and they're usually SPOT ON. I think cause they're like the Singing Machine Motown stuff... made from the original songs. Their version of a couple songs I distinctly remember were that way. Tom Petty's "Mary Jane's Last Dance" I think was one of them.

Course it was YEARS ago... guess I should go look them up before I type! !

((EDIT)) NOPE, guess that was NuTech or United! Staupid me!

It definitely isn't NuTech.
I have some U-Best and they are very hit/miss. Some are done actually quite well but not from original, but then others sound like a bad midi synth.
Haven't heard the United.

Since Dwight Yoakum doesn't have the vocal range of Robin Zander and can't hit a high "A", his version is perfect for those who want it down two. That's the way it comes.

Just kidding. Sorta. There's an awful lot of slide work in there.

Anyway I downloaded the DK version. It comes down 1 BTW. There's that low level muted synth guide on this one that seems to sneak into some DK tracks, but I don't think it will be noticed in the club on a loud track like this. The rest of the track is more solid than the SC (which as I said up front may actually be more faithful to the original.) The singer didn't put it up last night. A woman BTW... so I may have to restore it to it's original key by taking it up 1.

I've been known to sing this in bands. I may give this DK track a try myself.

Yeah, they do that. It actually makes sense, considering 90% of rock tracks are for tenors and only about 15% of the male population are tenors. (Which is why I learned to love country, by the way.) But some people will absolutely go berserk if it's in what they think is the wrong key.


Soundchoice has by far the truest guitar renditions, but there are lots of tracks where the rhythm section is quite thin.

There are a number of tracks like that. For instance "Cherry Bomb" by Mellencamp. The SC track is undoubtedly much more true to the original than the Legends track, but the Legends track sound a lot better for karaoke purposes. I bet now that JCM himself has dropped a step or two, it would be so if he sang to it!

Bottom line, for karaoke purposes a fuller instrumentation sounds better. You can probably boost the mids on the SC track and make it sound better, but I really like the way Chartbuster does country on most songs for that reason.

Oh, I've looked high and low for that Tom Petty song. It was a VCD or DVD... that's all I can tell you.

She had a couple others that just rocked my world. But whenever I'd ask about them, she just smiled and wouldn't tell me! ((grrrr))

After singing multiple versions of "I Want You To Want Me" yesterday I have chosen the Monster Hits version as my favorite. The Guitars seem to be the most pronounced out of all of the versions that I could find. Just my humble opinion.

Given the choice between several brands of a song, if I haven't heard them before, I will always choose the Monster Hits version. I find them to be generally the best over the others, even some Sound Choice songs!
If only I had more of their discs.....

I find Monster Hits to be flat most of the time, even quite midi-ish. Only two I have that I found worth buying was the Two with Jackson Brown and Tom Petty!

I don't find that at all.
I find that they tend to follow the original arrangement more closely and their background singers aren't off key like many of the other discs are (I HATE that!).
But then again, I havn't got a whole lot of the discs so I could be way off and just the ones I have are good.
I'll have to take your word for it.

Don't forget that it's one of the few songs that a live version is much more wellknown the original. The studio version is way more country. Not too many other songs that fall into that category.....Maybe I'm Amazed, Do You Feel Like We Do, Kick Out The Jams....
