Nothing worse than dead air bettween songs waiting for the next singer. How do most profesionals handle this. Ive been using an Ipod and fading it in and out . Any sugestions?

Pretty much what I do as well although I just use my DJ computer & running all night on auto mode & fade in/out between singers. Only long enough to get the next singer to the stage - usually less than 10-15 seconds, never full songs.

I use a laptop and have different playlists that I put on - leave it run the whole night, hit it between singers (like Lonman, 10-15 seconds, never a whole song). Upgrade music on the lappy regularly and use playlists appropriate for crowd. We also have a DVD player set up in our rack that we can run DVD concerts on before show starts. I don't like dead air either.

We have so little dead air that we stopped doing filler songs. People have gotten used to CompuHost, and they watch that singer lineup display diligently. They are literally arriving at the mic as the last person leaves. We pretty much run back to back.

I have 2 soundcards. I run winamp for backgrounfd music and PCKJ for karaoke.

Soundcard 1 is on Winamp

Soundcard 2 is on PCKJ

When the karaoke song is over I raise the level of the winamp soundcard on my mixer and fade it when I hit play on the next karaoke song.

With winamp I build a playlist and either let it run or hit play when the karaoke song gets close to over.

What they all said .... !! For me it's simple as I also use PCDJKJ for Karaoke and PCDJ RED for DJ and filler music . Like many the program allows me to automatically fade right into a FILLER song until the next singer arrives.

And sometimes there's just DEAD AIR as I make announcements or other stuff

Before I went computer, I brought my iPod and filled it with music, enough for about 5 hours just in case, and hooked it up to stereo channel on my mixer. Just fade out karaoke and fade in music at the same time, reverse as you start the music. Computer made it so much better. I do same thing Lonnie and others have said.

The same is happening to me with Compuhost. My singers are paying attention to the scrolling marque at the bottom of the screen. The only time I have to deal with dead air is either the singer is outside smoking or in the restroom.

As for dead air.... run your mouth that's what a host is for. You don't have to say anything important just keep talking.

There are times when I don't hit my filler music at all because people know they're next and are standing there with the mic in their hand. I do use it if I have to change a song for someone once they come up, or they come running up just before they're supposed to sing; I'll also do it if I have the same 3-4 singers until a show gets going - gives everyone else a break from the same singers. The lappy I use is my DJ'ing one and I have it set up on a channel of its own so it's really easy to slide it up. I sure don't get to play much of a song most of the time, though toward the end of the night if the singers have died back and the dancing crowd is there, I'll play for them. Just depends on the situation.

With our software we do not like more than 2 seconds silence without high beat music auto fade I used to duck the filler music with a compressor We dont even do that any more. The audience wants high beat music and they dont want some MC ( yes I have done this) jabbering on the mic. It kills the tempo. We go nuts if there is more than 3 seconds silence without high beat music. In a country crowd it is country but we are not there to be jabbering on the mic. They want music..We are not the entertainers the singers are. Like I say we run a very high tempo show and you sit here talking about amount of timing The filler music (genre and beat) is more important than that. Oh we dont play more than 20 seconds fill If you are playing the right fill they dont give a shyat and we can play a whole song and they are dancing singers included and even the singers get pissed if you shut it off get a clue. And there are those here that argue against that still.

could we see a list of good up beat songs for filler. would all instermental be possible? for years I have recorded the singer then played it back as I comment and as the next singer arrives then fade to next singer, sounds good , but a lot of extra work. I'd like to try filler music, give me a list of songs . thanks ken

When I go down tonight I'll get some playlists. I have several playlists we can load on a dime like country, big band, 50's, 60's, hip hop, dinner background, tejano and more. I actually have lists made up by teens.

I use Show Presenter and program the quickkeys to play theme songs from old sitcoms as my filler between songs. The crowd usually gets a kick when Movin' On Up from the Jeffersons or The Adams Family theme comes across the speakers.
