I can tell you, here in West Texas, and I am pretty sure all over the state, when it comes to country music, if it is done by George Strait, it will be a favorite song. To a country fan from Texas, all of Strait's songs are our favorites. lol You also cant go wrong with most of Alan Jackson's tunes. The traditional artists are most respected around here too such as Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Conway Twitty, George Jones, Jim Reeves, and you should never ever forget Ray Price. My fiddle player played with Price for 17 years, I have to do Ray Price tunes! lol People around here don't care for the newer country artists because they are not really country to us. They are more pop oriented. We like country! To us, there is a huge difference. I made up my mind one night that I was going to see how long I could go without doing a Strait tune. Within 10 minutes I had requests for songs like, The Chair, Amarillo By Morning, It Ain't Cool To Be Crazy About You, Nobody In His Right Mind Would Have Left Her, Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Her Mind, etc. Hands down, when you say country music around here, Strait's name is going to be spoken within the next 4 or 5 sentences. That's just my 2 cents worth and I do country music exclusively with a live band, and get the chance to visit a friend's karaoke show quite often to sing there too! That's the way it is in West Texas at least!--Mike

For my favorite country songs (they are just about all country), my list would be way too long. Here’s a few.

I could list about 25 George Strait songs but my favorite 3 are “Amarillo by Morning”, A Fire I Can’t Put Out” and “I Cross My Heart”. George Strait is my favorite country artist and the artist who’s songs I sing more often than any other.

Josh Turner, “Your Man”, “Long Black Train” and “Would You Go With Me”.

Conway Twitty, “Hello Darlin’”, “Fifteen Years Ago” and “I See The Want To In Your Eyes”.

Hank Williams Sr. “Cold Cold Heart”, “Take These Chains From My Heart” and “Jambalaya”

The gentle giant Don Williams “Some Broken Hearts Never Mend”, “Tulsa Time” and “You’re My Best Friend”.

George Jones, “She Thinks I Still Care”, “The Grand Tour” and “White Lightnin’”.

Glenn Campbell, ‘Witchita Lineman”, “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Southern Nights”.

Eddy Arnold, “What’s He Doing In My World”, “I Really Don’t Want To Know” “Welcome To My World”.

Del Reeves “Girl On the Billboard” when I want a laugh.

I cant believe that what I wrote posted 3 times. I am so sorry everyone! I did not intend for that to happen. I just came back in here and noticed what has happened. I am really sorry. I realize that is absolutely annoying! --Mike

ml, I think the triple posting underscores George Strait's greatness. ;) Actually, I don't think he's ever done a bad song. Some are better than others, but all have solid musicianship backing them up. I've heard The Chair sung a few times, and I remember when I first heard it on the radio--it is a nice song, and it's kind of an unusual song in the way it's constructed (I'm sure there's a better way to say that but...).

I like Gene Watson also. I notice his Memories to Burn is available on karaoke, and I'm hoping Don't Waste It on the Blues will be available at some point. Native Seattle fiddler, Mark O'Connor, backs him on some songs, so I gotta be partial to that! ;) I believe he has accompanied other country artists as well:

http://www.markoconnor.com/

I think the 70's, 80's, and early 90's country displayed some really good musician ship. I like George Strait's accompaniament, and that of the Judds (like on the song Drops of Water), and Gene Watson...the songs are very solid, and after you've listened to them, you go back and listen again to each instrument and what they are doing.

With regards to Hank, I've also sung Jamblaya. I also sing Lovesick Blues sometimes, and Mind Your Own Business.

Good to see another person is singing Glen Campbell's Sourthern Nights! I like that song, especially the intro.

With regards to John Anderson, I like singing his I've Got It Made.

Anyone sing This Thing Called Wanting and Having It All by Sawyer Brown?

Another song I wish were karaoke-ized is Hummingbird by Ricky Skaggs. I love the picking in this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SR17CnqJeA
